so detailed that they don't even put in important protruding buttons? that's my point. One thing seems very important while another doesn't matter. If apple wants to keep something under wraps, it seems the first thing they could do is not put a huge logo on it. that's all I'm saying.
yes exactly!!! doesnt seem really apple like. they never release things anyways and tell people about it b4 hand...unless its something like leopard, etc.

The " 'mirror' plastic" on the back of iPods is, actually, chromed or polished metal (I'm not really sure exactly which kind of metal, but I'm betting on stainless steel). As for the scratches, both my two old full-sized iPods (I sold my 3G, and had my 5G stolen from me) were almost scratch-free when I upgraded them, as is my new Classic, which I bought this christmas.

I found that the 3G's included carrying case with belt clip did more harm than good, as that nylon-covered cardboard U-shaped thingy scratched the hell out the iPod's back, and was utterly surprised to find that the best "case" ever made for the iPod is actually an iPod Sock. I've been using them ever since I went to NY and bought a box of them (I gave the three "girly" ones to a cousin of mine), and noticed that both the 5G and the Classic remained almost scratch-free for a lot of time (and I mean +6 months, with the odd tiny scratch here and there, much like would happen with, say, a new car).

As long as you don't try to wipe the smudges from the back of your iPod, carry your keys and change and your iPod on separate pockets, and always lay your iPod either on top of the sock or inside it, you won't get virtually any scratches on its body (yes, even yesterday, I had to give a friend of mine a homicidal stare because she was about to lay it down directly on a stone coffee table... fortunately, that stopped her just in time since, from my experience at least, laying iPods on furniture - even when covered in some kind of cloth, like dining tables - is what scratches them more easily, because of friction and debris). Oh, and as a bonus, the sock actually wipes the smudges itself, since it's made of soft cotton, without really scratching it.

yes i think its metal, not plastic... the top part (where the click wheel is etc) is some kind of clear plastic. the bottom part is some kind of metal.

my ipod mini G4 was really really good at not getting scratched, exactly like my CD MBP. they seem to be the same texture and all. the new ipods seem a bit more susceptible to scratches.

Well, I was especially anal about my 1G Nano, using only microfibre/suede style cloth to clean it now and again. It still got scratched. Anyway, I'm over it now.

Back to the iPhone. If the iPhone is gonna go white, I reckon the white macbook will be around for a while yet... But, personally, I can't see a white iPhone.

Alternatively, it's a hollow shell that Apple will use for the 3G iPhone.

Nope, its a none working iphone "shell", not a case. Which leads me to think it is real as this is the kind of thing that would be sent out to case manufactures.

Is it just me or is this whole thing dragging on to much...come on steve!

I always assumed is was plastic since it sounds and feels plasticky when you tap it, but according to various web sources it's actually chrome plated aluminum. The chrome plating is incomprehensibly thin, hence its scratch-happy nature.

But that's exactly the point... which other gadget do you need to treat like an infant with osteoporosis? Listen to yourself, you just wrote a manual for keeping a p o r t a b l e device scratch free, and you see nothing wrong with having to resort to that? There's nothing strange about a portable, pocket-sized device that will scratch if you look at it funny?

I've had 12 cellphones since 1994, I still have 10 of them in a drawer. They've been in pockets with keys and coins, they've been scraping against sand grains at the bottom of bags, one has been in a toilet and another was soaked in beer -- yet they all look fine, save for some minor scratches only noticable upon closer examination. My iPod Nano gen1 looked worse after 2 hours of use than my old Nokia 8210 does after nearly 10 years (that's the one that got soaked in beer, amongst other atrocities). Same goes for the back of my iPod Touch, which I've kept in a protective sleeve right from the beginning. The myriad of scratches is the result of occasionally placing it flat on a seemingly clean tabletop without the sleeve on.

Do you really believe that a company which keeps stunning the market with engineering feats like the MBA, the iMac and the iPhone, has absolutely no idea how to make something as basic as a scratch resistant shell? Besides, they already achieved that prior to the Gen1 Nano, with the iPod Mini which had a tough outer shell of anodized aluminum (re-introduced for the Gen2 Nano, which all Gen1 customers then had to run out and buy).

I'm not big on conspiracy theories, but I'm telling you, that iPod back is tailor made to scratch easily. Remember when the Nano was introduced and Steve kept rubbing in the line "now we finally know what that small extra pocket is for?" Do you really think he didn't know at the time that if you actually do put the Nano in that pocket, even the tiniest bit of lint or microscopic breadcrumbs in there will have your Nano look like Edward James Olmos in a matter of hours? Oh, he knew, and laughed all the way to the bank, because:

1) He knew you'd blame yourself for the scratches (Q.E.D.), buy a fresh iPod and swear you'll take better care of it this time.

2) In order to take better care of it you buy various sleeves, socks and other protective contraptions. Voilá: Apple cashes in on the poor durability of the iPod exterior.

3) But even then you'd eventually screw up anyway, as the iPod is impossible not to scratch even when protected by 10 layers of silicon, steel and fabric, so you'll buy a third one... etc.

And now they're "improving" the iPhone along the same lines. The first one was way too good.

Makes sense.

Anyone getting this if it is the new v2? I was looking for a totally different look or a redesign for the second version.

My 2c:

This is a dummy phone sent from Apple to case manufacturers. This is pretty accurate what the final phone will look like, possibly some colour and material tweaks here and there. Maybe multiple colour versions as other rumours indicate.

I'n not really digging the white, I think the current iPhone looks nicer.

Ok well I give up, I don't know whether to think it's a shell or a case. If only I had a remote like that movie Click.

Ehh well according to the new Engadget post about the Griffin mold, it looks like it's real. AND it's gonna have a front camera.

If this thing is in any way real, it almost certainly is a shell of the 3G iphone and not a case. It is way too thin to be a case.

I am certain that this is a dummy 3G iPhone, what I am really hoping for is that the phone isn't glossy white, that would be a real step backwards from the brushed aluminium.

I hope this is fake. White??? I like black or brushed silver.

I think we can conclude that Apple made white iphone shells with none of the components inside to send out to case manufacturers just as a way of informing them of the size and shape and where the holes need to be etc. But it would seem pretty sensible for Apple to just use these white prototypes as a way to prevent these 3rd parties from seeing what the exact iphone will look like and will most probably have different colours, materials etc for the real version, just the same shape.

I think thats why we'vre seen so many 'leaked' white glossy iphones, because Apple have used these to give those who need to know the dimensions and shape of the iphone, but not actually give away any more than that i.e. the actual colour, material and insides!

Wow!

I am stunned at the number of people who say they will not buy the 3G because of the BACK!I don't know about you,but I bought mine for the FRONT.I haven't given the back a thought since I got it.
As long as the present front goodness remains+GPS+Front camera+video recording+32Gb+3G+App store make mine black, even if it is paper mache!

I'm still planning on getting one but I'm much less keen if this is what it actually looks like. I think the current model looks great and would be picking up one of those were it not for the lack of 3G.

I'm sure it won't look too awful - Apple have a knack of producing nice stuff despite what we may think from leaks.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed this is a dummy model / deliberate red herring leak / mock up fake

Jeez, what did all you white-haters do a couple of years ago when pretty much all of Apple's products were white? iMacs, MacBooks, keyboards, mice, iPods...? It's Apple's signature color. Lately they've started to phase it out in favor of metal + black, but it's still present on the MB, the Mini, not to mention accessories like the Mighty Mouse, the alu keyboard, Time Capsule, AirPort express, iPod & iPhone docks, earbuds, remotes, cables, chargers etc etc. I can understand if you prefer black / brushed metal (so do I) but I don't understand why some make it out to be a jaw-dropping surprise that Apple makes white products.

What I'd like to know is, once white has been phased out will they change the color of cables, earbuds, docks and all that stuff, 'cuz my desktop is starting to look rather mismatched.

I hope it's a fake too, because I just sold my iPhone and this one doesn't look any different plus I like the alum back of the first one. I would probably still get this one, since it's hard not having an iPhone :)

White looked good then, we've since moved on, Apple has moved on. The multi-coloured plastic G3 iMacs were iconic and looked good back in the day too but I don't think too many people want a computer looking like that anymore.

The aluminium and black look is the new hotness, to go back to tawdry glossy white is a definite step back. There have been other manufacturers jumping on the glossy white look from xbox to sony ericsson to nintendo, it's cheapened the look. It's played out and has reached end of life, for Apple to bring it back seems mildly insane.

I still think the phone in these rumours is a dummy phone, and the final 3G iphone will look the same but with different (hopefully nicer looking) materials.

edit- I think they'll keep white for some things like accessories and cables etc. It just looks nice having them white, white is a neutral colour and it matches/complements anything.

The problem is that aluminium and black is the old hotness outside the Apple duck pond. To an outsider the MacBook Air looks like a Dell Inspiron circa 2004, only thinner. Meanwhile white is making a big comeback in other areas.

Cars: White = hot; silver, black = stale.
Kitchen appliances: White = hot; black, brushed stainless steel = stale.

Yeah I know, you'd think white cars would never come back to haunt us again, but that's what we said in the 80's about bell-bottom pants. Every ad from BMW and Audi this year has sported a white car. White is hot now (eek) and pearl white is smoking hot (double eek).

And don't get me started on the upcoming 2009 Ikea catalogue... everything's so white you'll think it's just blank paper.

Actually, white has always been a classic, modern color - consistent with Apples style of design. Plus you need to keep in mind that we're talking about a phone here. The enclosure serves more of a purpose (ie: reception). Apple may have had to go to a plastic back to increase reception/GPS capability and in that case a gloss white or black would be their best option. Can you imagine the uproar if Apple made a plastic back that was the same color as the aluminum on the current phone now?

I agree though that it's probably a dummy phone meant for sizing only, and I have faith that whatever Apple releases in June will be of good design. Jonathan Ive hasn't let us down yet :)

Why are these "leaked" images always of the worst quality? Aren't 5MP camera like $50 by now?

I'll buy it, but the AL back of the original iPhone resists scratching extremely well. It also looks and feels great. I never bought a case for my iPhone yet it still looks brand new. Switching to plastic may reduce the price (or increase Apple's profit), but I just don't see how plastic can hold up as well as AL.

<sarcasm>...absolutely believable to use white volume buttons and a black mute button.</sarcasm>
True, doubt they would let that happen. Other than that I do like the look of these, but for my own iPhone would prefer the same look as the current version. The silver just goes so well with my macbook pro

Looks like this case did not make accomodations for a front camera. :( If this case is an actual case for the new iPhone it might not have a front camera for video conferencing after all.

Look at the mold, it has the cutout for "sensors" around the ear speaker.

What you and lots of other people fail to realize is, the megapixel count on a camera does not make it take better quality images. the number of MPs only really determines how big the picture is, not the quality of said picture. It looks like an issue with focus here, in which case I would assume they were trying to snap the picture quickly without being seen and didn't give it time to really autofocus that well.

rumors have been pointing to the camera being under the glass beside the slit for the ear speaker. In this case, they can just leave a long sliver open to allow access to the speaker, camera, light sensor, and proximity sensor, instead of actually having a circular cutout for the camera.
