I think the same. If it costs the same than the 5s now and has 6s hardware minus 3d touch, I'll be very happy.

I don't believe it. I don't believe they will ever sell any iPhone at $225 (full retail). That's playing in the low end of the market, which they've never done in any product category. I also doubt the new iPhone pricing. Well, maybe a 16GB for $500.

That's an interesting idea. IMO, 16GB isn't very useful, so this would act simply as a "starter iPhone" for someone that has never tried an iPhone because it costs too much. Then they get addicted and have to upgrade to something with more memory. I got a 32GB "starter" iPhone myself, but now that I start to use it more seriously I know i have to upgrade to something with more.

Not necessarily. Sure, people like us would be looking for amount of RAM and SoC speed, but there are other features that are significant even for the lay users, such as Apple Pay (not supported on the 5S). People may not know what is Bluetooth 4.2 or NFC, but they can ask why their phone cannot do x y z that requires those features.

I disagree that price is a primary motivator in iPhone purchase. People buy iPhone because it's an iPhone, not because it's "cheaper." And $450 is not a new price point. It's the same price point as the baseline iPhone for years. It's just that now, it will carry closer feature parity with the rest of the lineup, and for many consumers, the choice is becoming simpler. Just pick how big of an iPhone you want.
A specious argument... all iPhones thusfar produced could be arguably described as 'expensive' - the option for someone looking for a 'cheaper' phone has never been provided by Apple. Of course, there are people like myself who want a 'cheaper' device which is also an iPhone. For me, Ebay gives me that option - not Apple itself.

If Apple now begin to sell new devices at a much lower point (a 5S at 50% price cut?!) then lots of people (the world over) who are looking for phones which are primarily 'cheaper' will be happy. Maybe Apple now see this as a viable way to generate more income. It remains to be seen if it will happen.

Yeah I don't see 3D Touch. 12 mp camera no ois, 5 mp ff camera. Upgraded Touch ID, a9, 2 gb ram, Apple Pay. $499.

I think this sets up for the upcoming iPhone 7 to be pretty significantly different to justify paying the premium.
This is Apple's way of getting into the lower cost smartphone market. Only they are doing it with a 3 year old 5s for $250?
Then the new 5se to be $500 entry price for what 16GB? Smart move to get into the budget phone space.

Thanks Apple. There goes the resale value of my phone.

Then get a quote in the next week or so, all of those buying services guarantee the quote for I think thirty days, so if you get it say a week before the new one comes out, you get what you should and can put that towards buying the new phone

$549 and $99 on contract i think would have some people interested. Especially when it sounds like it's on par with the current 6S in terms of processing and features.

I think, though, that to keep selling the 5s at a reduced price is a mistake. That phone will very likely be obsolete (or may as well be) with the next couple of iOS updates. It's not a good deal if it doesn't work well or provide a good user experience. Apple is making way too many poor user experiences these days.

I agree - a low cost phone would be a lot of people's first iPhone, and with a low price, might end up being a sizable chunk of users - all getting a bad impression about iOS.

Maybe this rumor is a misunderstanding - maybe they are using the 5S to create a new iPod Touch? Those sell for $199.

3D Touch will likely remain exclusive to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus as a differentiating feature.

I wish the differentiating factor could be the screen size because...duh. I don't like the tech already being behind old models (not to mention the 7 later in the year).

A lower-price iPhone will be the death knell for the iPod touch, which is why Apple might drop the 5S price by such a significant margin.

That's fine, Apple has the iPhone 6 and 6+ for you. Lots of people LOVE normal sized screens and hate the 4.7inch and even larger monstrosities.

Good luck hitting the ever-smaller buttons, especially in the wonky edges where touch sensitivity is weakest. I suggest you at least try a 4.7" before you disparage it. Also, you have an interesting definition of "normal", as in what a tiny fraction of smartphone users use.

At first I wondered why Appel would keep the 5s in the lineup. But IF the SE is not gimped then it makes since along the lines of SJ's original Mac matrix of pro desktop, pro laptop, consumer desktop, consumer laptop: 2 budget models in sm and lg, 2 full featured models in sm and lg, and 1 flagship in xl.

I hope they offer a 128GB model. Many 64GB iPhone 5s owners want a new phone because they ran out of space on their 64GB devices.

If Tim Cook thinks that is cannibalization of the higher priced models, he's clueless as usual. First of all, iPhone sales are relatively very low right now. Second, why does Cook care if Apple is taking money that potentially could have gone to Apple?
How do you know iPhone sales are low? Have you seen the sales figures? And why would your opinion of sales supersede the ceo of Apple?

As for 128gig, Time will tell.

I can show you tons of phones that are better than this upcoming 4 inch iPhone. Plus, Apple needs to learn how to make phones .1 mm thicker to get better battery sizes. Samsung just did that with the S7.

Yawwwwn... these types of comments are so old.

If this phone comes with an A9 processor and 2gb RAM it will be screaming fast. Even 1GB Ram it would be a very powerful little phone. A good move on Apple.

Why don't they just call it the 6s mini or nano. And it needs to be $350 for the base model. Apple could easily take androids share if they would come out with a $300 phone.

a new 4" iPhone would indeed be awesome - a pity I got the iP6s as I thought Apple will never make a "reasonable-sized" _phone_ again - the 6 really is too big for me for daily use, in jeans pockets, etc.

"... 3D Touch will likely remain exclusive to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus as a differentiating feature. "

Why?!?!
Why in the world should there be any differentiating feature other than screen size? That's the whole point - there shouldn't be!
Cook still doesn't get it.
