tell me why i should upgrade my "new" ipad - aka 3rd gen.

You shouldn't. Unless there's something specifically new, why would you? Other than a small niche group, the target audience for a new product is never people who still have something "new".

Kindle is, indeed, a great device, especially at its price point. Unfortunately, it's tightly locked into the Amazon ecosystem and runs on a heavily forked version of Android, which restricts overall user experience. Of course, no one ever accused Apple of being unrestrictive!
The Kindle Fire is forked Android. The e-reader is not Android and is a better reader than both the Fire and iBooks in my opinion.

Relentless.. Apple has been going through a downward spiral. My dissatisfaction is echoed with many many users on this forum. From macbooks, to ipads, to watchbands, etc. I speak for many apple fans.

So i ask you to sincerely tell me a compelling reason why i need to upgrade my "new" ipad 3rd gen?

I think you vastly overestimate the number of Apple fans here relative to the total number of Apple product users worldwide, or the weight and relevancy of their opinions.

I can't decide, iPad Air 2 for $299, or iPad for $329 with a $25 gift card (both at Best Buy right now).

It's for my wife's grandmother. I'm not sure the weight or screen differences would even be noticeable to her. Right now she is borrowing my 4th gen iPad to see how she likes having one, and if she will use it.
I'd go with the Air 2. It is the better product.

Agreed. At this price point, it will attract those who wanted an iPad, perhaps who couldn't afford or appreciate the features on the Pro line. And it gives The user the opportunity to be drawn into the ecosystem of Apple and further invest in other products if they so choose.

Excellent point about the reduced costs for the display, if it becomes damaged.

Absolutely Agee with you on the price. Nice to see Apple making a product that mere mortals can afford. I hope they continue with this cheaper line I have an Air 2 that I only use occasionally and at previous points couldn't justify another iPad when it comes time to replace it.

At these prices you don't have to think too much about buying one for casual use. About time portable tech that is truly powerful and useful became affordable. Now if I could find a phone to use that doesn't cost nearly $1,000 I could die happily ever after. :)

I really thought I'd be ordering an updated (faster with extra USB port) MacBook today. Sigh. I'll just keep trudging along with my old 2011 MBA. I can't believe that SIX YEARS later Apple still hasn't given me an upgrade option that appeals.

Not sure what you are looking for in an upgrade? You are getting by on a 6 year old machine so it seems that you must not have too many requirements for a high powered computer. If I were you I would definitely wait it out another half decade until the technology catches up with your computing requirements.

I think this is a smart move by Apple and will seal the iPad as the dominate tablet in the market. I see no reason to spend $200 on say a cheap android tablet, when you can now get into Apple's significantly better tablet app eco system, a full size 10" retina display, and a still fast A9 for $329 for which you could probably find sub-$300 at retailers in a few months.

Although, the test is going to be how the iPad Pro can take on the Surface Pro 4 and it's surprising well done Windows OEM clones on the high end productivity tablet market.

Good Lord. It's a Swiss Army Knife vs. a razor blade.

I bed you're a ball of fun at parties.

That's your best response for me telling you that putting a clear plastic cover over something would look kinda ******?

Truth hurts, I guess.

I think you vastly overestimate the stock bubble that apple is experiencing at the moment. Just wait my friend, just wait.

Some retailers put the iPad pro for sale, the 128gb 9.7 is 599.00. I decided to take the dive and get one, not sure if it was the right choice being that I know a new one is just around the corner.

Apple says the newlamination means nothing for the screen its just makes the iPad thinner because of mounting it also its lots more expensive to replace the screen, and honest the anti-glare on the Pro would be better sold as a fingerprint attractant. I think its hilarious that people are arguing to get a less powerful processor with a smaller battery and WORSE color screen in an effort to get an iPad 0.05 inches thinner.

With respect, you're wrong. The difference with lamination is huge. Air 2 feels like a sheet of glass. Air feels like a cheap plastic toy.

Isn't a bubble a bad thing? So you are trying to say that the bubble I think Apple is in isn't as bad as I think it is? So it's a good thing?

That said, I will. I believe we are simply witnessing the start of Apple's ascent all the way to the top. I feel that the people here whining and complaining about Apple simply don't see the big picture. When your entire premise revolves around Apple supposedly neglecting one line of products while ignoring everything else that Apple has done, you can't help but wonder just which side lacks perspective.

What? That's not the same thing.

Right. That's not EXACTLY the same thing. However, I'll contend that putting a clear plastic cover on a phone is fugly.

All the way, baby. And then you tap tap tap away on your little ipad about how happy you are that Apple is such a huge success. I'm sure that will be a very proud day for you.

That goes both ways.

My suggestion, leave the keyboard, and go into an Apple Store.

Most of the traffic is support/genius appointments , seems the average users are also bored and expect more .

I would return it and wait. It likely is around the corner and it's not as if it won't go on sale again once new ones are unveiled. Of course if you really need it today...

Aww come on, they're not that bad. Some of the thinner ones are practically invisible, although I went for a more heavy duty one, this one on a space grey 6S.

i know someone who ordered the ipad and it is showing delivery dates of april 4-5th. that is not next week?!

I ordered my iPad yesterday and it gave me Next Day Shipping option and it said it was going to be delivered by March 28-29 and now when I checked it says Preparing For Shipment, they moved the delivery date to April 3-April 4 Next Day shipping

Aaah, but there is something specifically new. You may have heard of a little operating system called iOS 10. The iPad3 won't upgrade to it, and there's ALREADY some apps that won't run on iPad 3, either because it's still on iOS 9 or because the iPad3 just won't play.

I found one such app within a week of iOS 10 coming out. Suddenly, I'm in the market for a new iPad.

Before you consider buying one of these you should realize there are a lot "cons" to weigh against that great price. Boils down to your needs (very basic = buy, else = don't buy)

It is you that's missing "the big picture".

You're always so giddy about your iPads because they make your use cases so much better and that's totally ok, but just for you and similar users.

Do you not see the overall trend here? Higher prices, inferior versions of existing products, discontinued product-cannibalizers ? Apple is leveraging its walled garden more and more to drive profit for the lack of truly new revolutionary products.

It's not just one line of products, it's all of them.

Apple's ascent to the top happened long ago, now they're just doing loop de loops above the clouds. Any higher and the air gets too thin to support the massive craft they have built. Maybe if they'd built a spaceship ? ...oh wait...

That new building is a symbol of their circular closed garden inside of which TC & co can hide from the hordes of the walking dead-beats.

Which average users? Do you get bored with a hammer? Because all these are tools, pick the tool you want to use and gen argue the veracity online. :)

As far as Apple Store traffic, seems there are quite the number of sales as well as support.

Apples ascent to the top was with the iPhone 6. And I thought Apple park was Steve's idea.

But thank goodness for truly innovative competition given your views on Apple. Eh?

The big picture is that iPads will be the future of mobile computing for the mass consumers. People just don't see it yet. But I believe.

Then don't buy the inferior versions of the products. The new iPad lacks a few bells and whistles but is also cheaper, so you can't say it's a strictly inferior product.

Likewise, you make a walled garden sound like an inherently bad thing.

In order for a walled ecosystem to "lock me in", it has to offer me a great user experience. One that works so well there is little incentive for me to want to leave and seek out competing alternatives.

And Apple is doing precisely that. iPhone + Apple Watch + Airpods. iPad Pro + Apple Pencil. Apple Pay. iCloud Photo Library. I am happy with how they work for me.

I know that with each additional Apple product I buy and Apple service that I sign on that I become more inexorably tied to the Apple ecosystem. But what I see, and have always sought, is an integrated computing solution which just works right out of the box. Till this day, Apple remains the only company who has done things the way I want them done, and so I will continue to give Apple my money.

Guess you were joking as much as I was about the "spaceship". Of course it was Steve's idea.

The big picture is that iPads will be the future of mobile computing for the mass consumers. People just don't see it yet. But I believe.

Admittedly, I was also thinking along those lines back around 2011, but then I saw the limitations moving forward.
Especially in the light of Microsoft giving people the option of both a tablet & a laptop using a single OS with their equally high-priced Surface line.

Then don't buy the inferior versions of the products. The new iPad lacks a few bells and whistles but is also cheaper, so you can't say it's a strictly inferior product.

Likewise, you make a walled garden sound like an inherently bad thing.

Indeed, I wouldn't buy a marginally cheaper version of a product that is inferior to a slightly more expensive but now discontinued version of the same. The iPad Air 2 struck a good middle ground and really, the "iPad Pro 9.7" should've been the iPad Air 3, but without the "Pro" moniker, Apple couldn't have jacked the price up as much.

The walled garden has existed ever since I've used Macs back in 1985 and I was ok with that. What I'm not ok with these days is the degree by which Apple forces you to pay more, get less and leave you with fewer 3rd party upgrade options.
It's all a matter of degrees, not the fact that Apple's eco-system has always been more closed.

The security aspects of it I do like, but not the usability or consumer options (lack thereof) ones.

Like I said. I don't find a closed ecosystem to be an inherently bad thing.

I was joking btw about the spaceship vs walled garden comparison. It's the most iconic office building in the world!

About your undying love for Apple. I would not want to change your mind.
Just please respect other people's opinions contrary to your own, by not calling everyone whiners & complainers, just because some of us miss the Apple of yonder.

I guess our beliefs differ based on your assumption of "the iPad is the future" and others' "Laptops will continue to evolve alongside tablets, smartphones, VR/AR headsets."
