Actually I'm a little afraid to purchase this one. iPads are usually released in October- does this mean there will be another one in October, and this one will be like the iPad 3 all over again?

it is possible they will refresh ipad air 2 to ipad air 3 at $499 lol.

Wait, why would you be worried? You want Apple to have less margins and perform poorly financially? I don't understand.

Although I think you did bring up a good point about the iPad being overpowered by the next iPhone. That was the concern when they designed the iPad Pro. They were going to use A8X at first, and realized that the A9 on the iPhone 6S will be more powerful.

In any case, we shall wait and see. My ideal next iPad would be the mini form factor with pencil support. If I don't think the bang of the buck for this upcoming 9.7" iPad Pro is worth it, I just keep using my mini 2 for now.
It might come as a surprise to you but most people care more about their own money than about Apple's money.

lol so many apple fanboys justifying this.

Later this year, if apple introduces iphone 7 with new features and so many upgrades to cpu and camera and then increase the base price to $750, will you accept it? Yes or No?
But they won' t. You' ll be able to get an updated and more advanced iphone7 and 7 plus for the same price as the 6s/+.
And there will be a iPhone 7 pro with even more advanced specs for a higher price than current 6s+ price.

For perspective:
If Apple released a 16gb(not 32gb!) iPad Air 3 with the a9x soc , 4gb of memory and an upgraded camera, no pencil support, no smart connector for 499 and the pro with 32gb instead of 16gb, all the specs of the air 3, but with a higher res screen, pencil support, smart connector for 599.
I would get the pro for 100 more(also 16gb more storage).

so if apple upgrades the iphone 7 with 32gb base memory, a10 cpu, 3gb ram, new display resolution and upgraded camera like they usually do every year and instead price it upwards to $750 as starting price, you would be happy ?

Typical Tim Cook Apple:
1. run out of ideas (Just take a look at iOS and OSX)
2. go after new product category prematurely (Watch)
3. resizing and renaming existing ones
4. having done all above, have the audacity to increase price.

Let's re-word your points.

1. Incrementally improve existing products.
2. Also make brand new products.
3. Giving the customer more choice.
4. Some products cost more than others, but the cheaper ones are still available.

Doesn't sound so bad without the spin, does it?

There will be people on here who will happily accept it and try to convince everybody that it was justified. It's absolutely fascinating how people will defend anything Apple does from a profit perspective...even though it literally costs them more money.

Begrudgingly accept it because they like their products....sure. But trying to justify it as reasonable...

My theory on Apple's increasingly blatant profit grabs is this: Apple is having a difficult time creating new products and features to diversity their revenue streams. Therefore they are simply increasing their average price per unit to keep their numbers steady on their quarterly reports. Eventually they're going to hit a plateau. This is not sustainable. And frankly not okay.

how's that? just last year they introduced new Macbook, new AppleTV, new AppleWatch, new iPhones with 3d touch, new iPad Pro and you say they have no new products?

No, because Apple will release a 16gb with a10 cpu, 2gb of ram, upgraded camera and higher res display for 649.

But they will also release a iPhone 7 pro with an even better (dual-lens) camera, higher clocked a10(or a10x) with 3gb , 32 gb base and a bigger and even higher res display for more than 649 us or the regular iPhone 7.

It is your choice. Do you want to pay more for the latest cutting edge that has very large improvements, you' ll get the pro.
Do you want a significant update which is also quite high tech and a large improvement , but want to pay the price you have always payed. you get the regular iPhone 7.

Execution on Apple TV and Apple Watch could have been better though.
Apple doesn' t seem to get things right on release day. Apple TV should have had a more powerful soc with 4K support, a cable subscription service/app and they should have released a gamecontroller/pad to set a standard. And tv OS was unpolished.

WatchOS, was not ready on release, watchOS 2.0 did improve things quite a bit.

Same for the iPad Pro. Hw is great. But no iOS pro.

I can see where Apple is going and trying to go, but it is a little bit too steady for me.
This way they don' t seem to hit a home run anymore and after release momentum/hype is gone.

You are really not seeing the whole picture. The pro 32 has more gb than the iPad Air 2 16gb for $100 more. Relatively it is about 50 dollars more expensive.
And it has an updated 240hz scanning display for pencil support, and it will probably have a 2732x2048 higher res display, with all the other more advanced tech, etc.
When the iPad 2 was released , the price was 599 for a 32gb model, iPad 3 32gb was 599 at launch, and so was the air 1 32gb.
No one cares about 240hz. It only matters for the pencil- thats ANOTHER 100 dollar extra.
And you say it will come with all the other more advanced tech? It will not go higher in resolution and it will get a led flash more megapixels more cpu/gpu. Yippie woohoo so exited for a very MINOR upgrade that costs ALOT more.

And that is one of the reasons why most people don't buy iPhones.
And Apple doesn't need "most people" to buy an iPhone.

20% or whatever market share Apple currently enjoys is still a very large number in an absolute sense. Not forgetting that every iPhone sold this way is extremely profitable in its own right.

And why not?

I've been waiting far too long for the Air 3. I don't use pencils, keyboards, or 3D Touch, and I'm not a professional. Oh well.
I think that for all intents and purposes, the iPad Pro is the Air 3. A thinner and lighter iPad can only get you so far marketing-wise. An iPad 3 is every bit as good as an iPad Air 2 when it comes to browsing youtube or watching netflix. I think moving forward, the new messaging will be about how the iPad can be used for productivity. Things that make use of the improved specs that the older iPad models lack.

You forget 16gb more storage.. :)
Lol , you are so emotional about this.
Ok, so tell me what would you have expected from an iPad Air 3 for 499,
What would be the main reason for you to upgrade to an air 3?

You're right--Apple did release a slew of new products last year. Aside from the new Apple Watch, most of these products are just incremental or evolutionary upgrades to products already on shelves. As Apple's products (and most other companies' products) have matured, there is less and less reason to have the latest and greatest every release. I believe that people are holding onto their Apple products longer now than they used to.

I hate this 32gb wifi only 128gb LTE plan they are using. 32gb could still use LTE!!!!!!!! I usually buy 16gb iPads to be honest.

"The base $599 price will apply to the 32GB model with Wi-Fi only, while 128GB and LTE versions will be sold at higher price points."

This just says that the 128GB and the LTE versions will be priced higher. It does not say that the LTE option will be available only on the 128GB iPad.

I love my iPad mini. I hope the mini gets the pro update as well. Or at least the ability to use it with the Apple pencil. I really want to be able to use my iPad mini as a portable sketchbook, but don't want the size of the larger ipads.

Perhaps they will release one.
But it will be more expensive.

Oh, I do care about my own money as well, not so much for Apple's.
As such, I won't buy Apple products if I don't think they are worth my money. Simple as that.

I'm going to buy the iPad Pro 9.7" and, since I've always purchased the 32GB, LTE version, I'll be paying the same price for it that I have in the past.

If the rumours are true you can only get the 9.7" iPad Pro with LTE if you get the 128GB one. Which is ridiculous, you should be able to get LTE In the 32GB as well. If the rumours are true and you can only get LTE in the 128GB I think I will be looking at a different tablet. That new Samsung tablet looks like it might be worth checking out. Hopefully the rumours are wrong but I have a feeling their not.

32GB=good; Price increase=bad. 32GB should have been the base all along. I've moved to 64GB now and don't see myself going down in size so if I upgraded I would have to go 128GB. Guess they knew that all along.

This is exactly my problem. I had already decided this was the next upgrade as my current iPad is coming up to 4 years old. But it was 64gb and I don't really need 128 but I don't want to go back to 32.

So only fanboys can see the value in this potential upgrade? How cute.

So does iOS take up like 10GB?
I guess 32 is fine. I do have iCloud storage for my docs and Thousands of photos and Apple Music. So... I guess I can still be a heavy user and not need so much storage. But it is nice to store a lot of music for offline play if ever in the situation of no wifi or lte

Since I had no intention to buy the 12" iPad Pro I have paid no attention to their pricing. I agree that pricing them that way is a really crappy way for Apple to treat it's customers. Looks like, if they do the same with the 9.7" iPad Pro, I'll have to balance my desire for the new iPad with my disapproval of this pricing scheme.

uhm you will be paying what you used to pay for 64 GB. A9X should be obvious just like every other iPad had the A.X ... Pen is sold seperatly and the RAM isnt really a selling point. Apple doesnt even mention it. so yeah to me thats just an naturally evolved iPad Air 3 sold with 32GB instead of 64GB and a new name
The ram isn't a selling point ? Actually the ram IS the point, if we really want "Pro" apps to come to iOS ...
I really hope Apple is going to put 4 Gb on the iPad Pro 9,7".
I don' t see the problem.
It has twice the memory of the 16gb iPad Air 2, and is $100 more expensive.
A 64gb iPad Air 2 is the same price.
So you get more gb for more money.
That is the way it has always been with Apple . It is just as expensive as the iPad Air 1 32gb was in 2013.
The problem is that this isn't 2013 anymore.
NANDs prices are lower today, and Apple should sell a 32 Gb model at the same price they used to sell the 16 Gb model.
