To each their own but I just sold off my Surface 3 because I HATED using Windows 10 as a tablet OS and I'm usually a pretty big Microsoft fanboy. I had an iPad 4 which I traded in for a Nexus 9 which was later traded in for the Surface 3 and I miss that iPad so much. Compared to Android and Win 10 iOs is just soooooo much better as a tablet OS IMO.

With this price I don't know if I will end up going with the iPad Pro but I'm almost certainly getting another iPad within the week.

I agree I have Windows 10 on my Yoga 2 Pro laptop and it works fine. Im not "anit-Windows" by any means

Would I want to hassle with Windows on the go needing quick info? no way.

This may be price gouging but after sinking way too much money and time into forcing the iPad Pro to fit my life (Spoiler: I failed) then Im willing to pay up.

The iPad Pro has a few fantastic specs that I now can't live without
- Loud speakers
- 4GB Ram
- Pencil Support

The iPad Pro is a great machine. But the problem is that the size has forced me to ever use the iPad Pro outside of the house. And if I'm only using a "portable" device at home then something isn't working for me.

So, $600 may be more than previous iPads but speaking out of experience with the iPad Pro then the extra money is worth spending for Apples best iPad ever. (Pending they don't cripple it with 2GB or a worse screen)

I really hope Apple will release a PadOS or iOS pro soon with a simple filemanager, multi account options and more multi window multitasking features.
A mix between iOS and MacOS. With standard iOS gui mode when no keyboard is attached through smartconnector, and MacOS style gui when a keyboard/trackpad is connected through smartconnector.
After releasing pro hardware, Apple should release a pro (I)OS.

More than likely, the direct cost of parts is minimal to Apple. Few dollars here and there.

What Apple is pricing its products at is artificial. It's probably more based on a mix of how much value the purchaser perceives that they receive, marketing strategy (how well it fits in with their lineup), and margins.

I like others, also miss the old days when their product lineups were much better organized and trimmed back. (iPhone 4S, iPhone 4), (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS)...

I'll never buy another iPad again for personal use. Had the original iPad mini, sold it and not looking back. IMO: just an overhyped product with untapped/unthought-out potential in terms of UI idioms, and Apple doesn't seem to care.
Maybe maybe not. So far all we have is assumptions.

Again, 4gb RAM costs more than 2.
32gb costs more than 16gb.
4 speaker units cost more than 2.
But probably the most expensive part is how much more is the apple pencil enabled screen.

Lets say its $30 in parts more. Apple has ALWAYS charged double or more the cost of parts. Have to account for marketing, R&D and a ton more in that profit. It's not 100% profit.

So anything $10-20-30-40 more in cost they will mark up to $100

Do you also REALLY believe it costs McDonald 1.30 for that coke? Try more like $.15-.20, if that.

If you're talking about markup from cost, Apple's markup % is a drop in the bucket. You only notice it because it's an expensive item. Your items you use daily and eat are marked up more than Apple products from cost.

I liked it when there were only three main iOS devices released each year and if we had to get the best iPhone we simply had to choose the latest one; Now it's like you have to choose a smaller one that fits in your hand with less features or the gigantic one with great features... Same with the iPad....Mini,Air, Pro Mini, Pro?
What's even wrong with Apple these days?

Yeah it's great for a laptop like that or a desktop, but I know I want different things from a tablet and Win 10 fails on almost all accounts :(

Bring a true Mac tablet.
No thank you.
OS X isn't designed for touch input.
OS X apps arent designed for touch input.
Keep the two operative system separated and interconnected via a good sync system.
I dont wanna "touch" my notebook's display....

but the dreaded windows makes it unusable
not completely unusable, but useless for me....

Too many skus in their product line without enough differentiation. I could see a Pro line, but I don't think this warrants it. They're just trying to bite into MS's Surface market. Also aesthetics, any layman, and many tech people just see it as a large iPad. Why didn't they change the form at all, or a pro color? Until you can run heavy duty programs on a tablet. I don't see the point of calling it a Pro

Windows 10 works fine with touchscreens (tablet/desktop mode), take of your Apple glasses.
I think he was referring to applications, not the operating system. If you don't plan to run desktop apps you're wasting the added bulk and complexity of a Surface as it's a comparatively poor tablet.

but it doesn't really run a touch oriented os, on the contrary it runs Windows so for what it counts they could even sold the Surface Pro 3 at $100 I wouldn't buy it anyway...

Windows 10 includes Tablet Mode specifically tuned for touch.

Yup.

Some people don't like Windows interface or whatever, but it is definitely NOT unstable as of Windows 10.

Now I am not feeling too bad with my iPad Pro 128GB for $799. Looks like I got more for my money.

a "file manager" already exists into iOS: they just need to refine it. But don't expect to find a Finder...
Multi account options are welcome.

Again, I dont think Windows 10 is bad by any means, but I would not want it on a truly portable device or tablet experience.

It may be helpful (or the clear choice I should say) to say people who need applications only Windows can run, but it's not the most streamlined experience for on the go.

Its still clunky at the end of the day side by side with iOS.

Why are people mad? You're getting an iPad Pro for $200 less with the only difference being 3" of screen. All of the other hardware will be the same (or comparable if not identical).

You cannot look at this as $100 over the Air 2; it is pencil capable with double the base store and double the speakers, smart connector etc.

If you weren't getting a 16gb model to being with you couldn't have even gotten the Air 2 for $499 anyways!
Because those upgrades don't warrant an extra $100. It's basically an upgraded iPad Air 2. A faster chip, more RAM and Apple pencil/keyboard support (for extra $$$) and 16gb of storage... Please. Should iPhone 7 cost $100 more than iPhone 6s because of a better SoC and camera??

Your OPINION not FACT. So dont buy it then, no gun to your head.

still useless.
And the vast majority of applications just need mouse + keyboard ...

I do agree I find certain (only a few) elements of Windows 10 unusable with touchscreen where I find myself reaching for the tackpad

Just curious, but what exactly is an "Apple Pencil enabled screen"?

Is it more than just Bluetooth and a specialized Pencil? As someone who can't draw then I've found little use for my Apple Pencil on my iPad Pro. But I can actually imagine a ton of practical writing/doodling scenarios in which an Apple Pencil would be great on an iPad Mini or even an iPhone.

I have no idea the tech behind it, but Im certain from the review/Anandtech stuff that it requires a lot more complex circuitry and tech. It's not just bluetooth as the screen has to read the pressure, light or soft to react. Which costs more.

I do agree though I have no desire for an apple pencil. But I get the price jump to make it compatible, along with all o the other upgrades.

Isn't the screen more expensive due to pencil support?
You would sure think so.

My theory on Apple's increasingly blatant profit grabs is this: Apple is having a difficult time creating new products and features to diversity their revenue streams. Therefore they are simply increasing their average price per unit to keep their numbers steady on their quarterly reports. Eventually they're going to hit a plateau. This is not sustainable. And frankly not okay.

Since when do you pay at cost for anything in the retail world? Last time I checked the main duty of a company is to make profits.

It's not just 16gb more storage. It's likely more RAM, newer chips, newer screens that do pencil which surely aren't cheaper than the Air 2 displays, more speakers (4 vs 2). Every part has a cost.

Even if it's $40 more in parts Apple can charge $100. It needs a profit on top of cost. If you dont like it build your own tablet at cost- oh wait you cant.
You get all of those with every (yearly) product update... for no additional cost. This update comes after 1.5 years and yet they want $100 more for what's simply an updated Air 2. iPad 3 didn't cost $100 more. It offered a brand new retina display, twice the RAM, twice the GPU power etc.

Wait, what? I thought iPad Pro meant the big model. Now you're going to have a regular size Pro and a big one too? Yeah, that's not going to confuse potential buyers. :(

It is confusing for new potential buyers.
They have a small and big Pro laptop. The Macbook Air is heavier than the lighter Macbook. Macbook is more expensive to many configurations of the other laptops. And the lighter sounding Macbook Air is their low end consumer laptop yet has more powerful processor than the Macbook. The Macbook Pro 13 inch is only 2 cores where the true Macbook Pro 15 is 4 cores and includes a GPU if you want it.
