Spotted the Bluetooth thing earlier on the tech specs page, really interested to see if they bring in any OS level changes to take advantage of that. It's understandable that nothing was announced at wwdc as that would have been a direct nod to upcoming hardware which is an Apple faux pas, but I wonder if it's big enough to warrant a mention at the 6s announcement.

The Geekbench 3 scores for the new iPod touch are right in line with where they are for the iPad mini 2 (1377/2478). So that gives you a general idea of what the performance will be like. Very nice upgrade for sure.

Should have put more focus on the battery life instead of making even faster when its completely needless as its always been fast enough.

I agree. I WAS going to buy it (just because I love gadgets), but I decided to hold off. It still only gets "40 hours Music Playback" like the last generation. The watered down A8 is good, but since my iPod Touch 5th generation is on 6.1, it'd be "as fast" as an iPod Touch 6th Generation on iOS 8.4 with the same music playback time.

I wouldn't mind receiving this iPod Touch as a gift though...

40 hours is 'good' but its never actually 40 hours.

Why no Touch ID ? Why??
That will be the only upgrade next year, for $100 more over the previous generation... :p

I expect to keep the margins where they want them and the price point stable. Don't forget the 3rd gen was actually just a repackaged 2nd gen iPod Touch unless you went with the higher capacity model, then you actually got a better processor as well. I'm sure it was again a margins issue.

I'll be honest, I highly doubt they'll be updating the iPod again for at least another two or three years, if they ever update it again at all.

I'm pretty sure the new iPod touch would still feel significantly faster despite being on iOS 8.4.

Because Apple's entire philosophy is to sell you an obsolete and crippled product. That's how they get you to upgrade in a year and buy another one that has a feature that should have been part of the original product.
Right..knew there would some inane whining. You do know this thing is just $200 hey?

Go elsewhere to get your magical product you covet if you think apple screws you so much. Or maybe you like the pain?

I noticed since iOS 8.4 that some games I play on my ol' 5th iPod Touch have significant frame rate drops since before the update, which I knew meant that the 6th generation of iPod Touch with faster CPU was around the corner, because Apple loves to cripple software performance on old devices to drive a hardware upgrade path.

Except the chances of a new iPod touch next year are nill. Putting A8 into this device means it will get one or two more OS upgrades before being discontinued.

Planned obsolescence. Apple should be taken to court for that, it's unethical fraud and spitting in the face of Apple consumers.

The only thing I think this is missing now is Touch ID and the ability to integrate Apple Pay into the device.
Clearly this is deliberate, or else they would have found a way of integrating this into their newest device.

If Apple really did that kind of stuff, I don't understand why you or anybody else would ever buy Apple products. Fact of the matter is, they don't do that kind of thing. Because they also know that nobody would ever buy their products again if they pulled that kind of crap.

Or, you can put your money where your mouth is and never buy another Apple product again, if you really think that's what they're doing.
