Except the vast majority of people on Android either cant or ever upgrade older devices to the latest software. Try again.

1) Most people don't bother as much you or I
2) The manufacturers themselves give up on the phones, but even if they got the update, they wouldn't be crippled like what iOS does to iphones. Proof? My HTC One S; it's old as dirt but I'm still rocking Android 5.0 via CyanogenMod. Is it slow? NO, it's just as snappy as any other ROM i've tried.
3) Unlike iOS, apps still work just fine on Android 4.X.X so there isn't even a huge need to update

The new iPod Touch is a deception IMHO :

- 16 GB base model
- 1 GB of RAM
- Still a 4-inch screen
- Low-clock processor
- No Touch ID
- Still no GPS

On the plus side :
+ Wireless 802.11ac
+ Bluetooth 4.1
+ The 4-inch screen has the same ratio than the 4.7-inch screen (for devs)

I preferred back then when the iPod Touch was basically an iPhone without the "phone" feature. Now, THAT was a relevant product and I know a few people who'd buy it in a heartbeat.

from a marketing standpoint, if they're still willing to buy 16GB and 32GB, you'd just have the options. to make money.

the only time they will change when these 128GB and 256GB are just sitting on the shelves.

Which is what they did with the iPhones, i didnt research, but one can make an intelligent guess and see that the 32GB was upsetting the 64GB and the 128GB

so they changed it to 64GB as the base price to sell those 64 GB. and it incites the consumer to buy a new iPhone with a storage upgrade since its tripled the space not doubled.

now, the 16GB - the cheapest model will alway sell, because simply for the fact its the cheapest, and a lot unexperienced users will think 16GB is enough.

64GB - more people that didnt think it was worth it to upgrade storage space will now upgrade since its tripled the storage space. Not to mention everyone that planned on getting 32GB phones are now getting 64GB.

128GB - some of the 64GB buyers will head to here, but sales really isn't going to improve here much, people will get it if they really need it or have the money, or enthusiasts.

now the 5S has 16GB and 32GB - For people like :"hey i don't need all the new crap or want to pay that much, but i need an iPhone that has more storage space then 16GB.

Its a pretty good marketing plan, their incentive is to push that middle tier iPhone.

That storage upgrade costs what like 5-20 dollars for apple? so appealing that mid tier iPhone to the masses is pretty ideal. They make the most bang out of it and its the most marketable. (yeah 128GB is going to be a hard sell to average consumers)

16GB option will always exist because ROW can almost afford it.

ANY Android! LMAO!

Little do you know but Google's actually IMPROVED performance on older Androids with every new iteration of the OS.

Buahahaha.
But that's if your carrier or manufacturer go to the bother of actually releasing the updates in the first place...

My partner has a Samsung Galaxy S3, it's just under three years old yet no Android L for it. And don't bother telling me to go and install own custom ROM...hello...? It's not official yet Apple will be releasing iOS 9 for the iPhone 4S

I am waiting until my 3rd gen iPod Touch is once again worth something on Ebay before upgrading to the latest greatest ;) still in mint condition with original battery, works fine.

I have an iPod Touch 5g and I could tell you from experience that it isn't really "4 years of COMPLETE software support." For example, for whatever reason, the iPod Touch won't be getting the hugely useful Lower Power Mode Feature that is found in the iPhones. In this way, the iPod Touch 5g has been getting iOS support, but not the complete that some thought it might receive. I for sure thought that this Low Power Mode would be arriving in the iPod Touch as it is a software implementation that doesn't rely on any specific hardware.

Hugely bummed by this fact, but in other aspects, it seems like iOS 9 has better battery life on my Touch than iOS 8. When I was running the iOS 8 beta, battery life and performance was just terrible.

Just my 2 cents on the issue...

I don't know where you got "complete" software support, as I didn't claim that. I stated it has received four years of software support.

One good theory as to why it won't be receiving that low-power mode is because essentially all that apple is doing is lowering the clock rate of the CPU and GPU. Newer devices can operate well in that low power state, but the A5 needs every single Mhz it can use. If anything a slight overclock would help, but at the expense of marginal increase in performance vs bigger power usage.

Yeah, HTC is notorious for giving their customers the finger. HTC One is more than capable of being relevant today and they never bothered to give users the ability to update past 4.1. None of its owners were pleased at all, but CM11 and CM12 have alleviated that (though rooting the phone is a major PITA).

The new iPod touch with an A8 processor and upgraded 8-megapixel rear camera just launched this morning, but TechCrunch's Matthew Panzarino already has one in hand and has run some benchmarks on the device.

According to early testing, the A8 processor in the new iPod touch appears to be running at 1.10GHz per core, which is slower than the 1.39GHz per core the iPhone 6 runs at, presumably to manage battery life. In Geekbench 3, the iPod touch scored 1379 on the single-core test and 2440 on the multi-core test right out of the box. The previous-generation A5 iPod touch scored 215/410 on Geekbench's single and multi-core tests, so the new sixth-generation iPod is six times faster and a massive improvement over the fifth-generation iPod.

Labeled as iPod7,1 instead of iPod6,1 as expected (the previous-generation iPod's model ID was iPod5,1), the new iPod touch ships with Apple's latest operating system, iOS 8.4, so it works with Apple Music out of the box. Like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the iPod touch has 1GB of RAM to go along with its A8 processor.

The new iPod also includes an M8 motion coprocessor for recording motion activity that's uploaded to the Health app, and it supports 802.11ac wireless. Its 64-bit A8 processor is a major improvement over the A5 processor in the older iPod touch, and it includes support for Metal, bringing much-improved games to the device.

The iPod touch has one feature that hasn't yet made it into other Apple products -- Bluetooth 4.1. It's the first of Apple's devices to offer the new specification. Bluetooth 4.1 is more reliable, offering less interference with LTE bands, improved power management, and better data transfer.

Available in several new colors, the iPod touch is priced at $199 for the 16GB model, $249 for the 32GB model, $299 for the 64GB model, and $399 for the 128GB model. It's available from the Apple online store beginning today.

Apple's also released new iPod nano and shuffle models in updated colors, but the internal components of those devices have not changed.

Does the iPod even have any competitors left? Still alternative MP3 players on the market? Never hear about them anymore with the iPhone overshadowing everything.

Surprised they updated iPod at all. But, oh well, guess with the new apple music service, they expect a resurgence in sales. Still have my old 2nd gen touch that was gifted with my first MBp back in the day.
Now used as a paperweight. ;)

There are some. For example, Sandisk makes a few models, but everyone uses their phones. Actually apple ruining the music app is making me consider switching to an Android phone with a microSD card. Unfortunately, nobody makes a good one that is small. The closest thing to what I want is a Sony Xperia z3 compact.

Should have put more focus on the battery life instead of making even faster when its completely needless as its always been fast enough.

Faster future-proofs it, so that's a good thing - for users and for developers. And it's much better technology than the previous generation (not just faster, but more efficient). But I agree that a strong focus on battery life should always be at the top of the list. Battery capacity is very much dependent on the physical size of the battery, though. Only once we get brand new battery technology can the capacity be increased significantly.

This brings up the eventual question is with this latest refresh, will the new iPod Touch 7th gen? 6th gen? have this low power state as it is running the A8 processor, like the iPhone 6...doubt it, maybe they will release an ipsw that is targeted towards this newest refresh while at the same time keeping the 5th gen ipsw upon release....

Thoughts?

Yes, just saw the 8mp and 120fps slow motion so pretty long support. Hopefully the quality is improved too.

Is Bluetooth 4.1 a software update to 4.0 or a hardware feature?

It considers what Bluetooth chipset you are using. Not making any statements about this generation of iPod Touch til I see a teardown. Just hope iFixIt replaces their spokesmodel with someone younger and thinner.

That's exactly what it still is. The camera is better than any camera on ANY touch/iPhone comparison. (5/5S camera) The low clocking on the processor keeps the battery running longer and it also pushes a lot LESS pixels than the iPhone. It comes in 128 GB for 399. ALL iPhones have had 1Gb of RAM for 3 years. As does the current lineup. Not sure how this some horrible upgrade that doesn't compare to iPhones. It's the closest and iPod has EVER been to an iPhone.
