One month ago we've had a similar thread. My post over there:
A new smaller iPhone with limited specs would be the final stab in the back of some Apple lovers. I can see them bleeding.

Sure. Surely a death blow to some Apple lovers.

They will surely switch to Android and buy one of their premium 4 inch phones......oh wait.

If both the 4" and 5.5" are price the same; the Apple concern about a cheaper iPhone taking away sale from a higher price iPhone would be neutralized too!

I'll go one step further!

Apple: Put flagship specs in a 4" size and charge me full flagship price!

Money is *not* the issue - I literally just want a top of the line 4" iPhone, at whatever price.

Feel free to leave 3D touch out on the 4" model.

On the 6s I only ever even engage 3D touch when it's by accident.

I'm sure some people love it - I find it to be useless so far.

Problem is you are in the vast minority.

There is a reason why there isn't a single 4 inch premium Android phone on the market.

At most Apple would be able to sell 10-20 million of these premium 4 inch phones. Apple sells over 150 million of its large screen flagships. Now divided the tooling cost over 10 million units versus 150 million units and you see why they would actually have to charge you MORE for a smaller phone with the same specs.

Nice to see a 4" option, but I would like to see an 'S' version of the current release. So 6S in 3 sizes, identical hardware. Still going to try the 4.7" come renewal time here shortly.

But how do we know this?

They've never sold a 4" flagship alongside the larger models.

Android comparisons are invalid as a whole ton of people (like me) have no interest in Android no matter what the device as I don't like the OS. (I do re-try android every year or so...and am always left wondering why I bothered)

I'd really like to see feature parity across all 3 models (4", 4.7" and 5.5").

Make the decision be: "Do you want a new iPhone? - Come pick what size as they are all equally amazing" and not make it about the screen size + feature choice mess.

Old ones can be cheaper ones and new ones can all be equally "new" and you can choose the right tool for your requirements (i.e. screen size) without any compromises.

And a heck of a lot of people buy the 5" Samsungs.... Not sure you got my point. And I did update my post before seeing yours that a 4" iPhone makes sense too. It's the iPhone 6 sizes that didn't quite meet what my opinion of a good phone size should be.

I think ultimately it comes down to personal preference. I have always like the whole one handed use thing. But I'll probably but a new iPhone next year. Doesn't mean my screen size preference has changed. Just means that after taking everything into account, the iPhone will likely still trump anything else.

Having held a 6/6S, that's definitely about as large as I'd want to go.

I guess I would buy a new 4" even if it is a budget model! Just make sure it has 128GB storage option, 1080 HD screen resolution and at least 3GB DDR4 inside and A9 as well as NFC and latest Touch ID. I don't use the camera that often!

If true, this will be THE iPhone for all those who still gripe about the iPhone 6 models being "too big"... a chance for those apparent multitudes to put their money where their mouth is. It will be interesting to see how many "first world" units sell vs. the bigger-screen iPhones. Will some? Sure. Some 3" iPhones would sell too as would some 6.5" iPhones if Apple rolled either out.

The question is will many sell (other than in countries where the price is the most key variable in choosing this one over the larger-screened iPhones)? It looks like we may get to find out.

And, IMO, that's great. Choices are good. One (or two) size(s) does not fit all.
It would be the phone IF spec wise it would be the same. But this will have Older hardware and older everything.

Wow. No facts to back this up at all.

For starters, since nobody is currently selling a premium 4" phone, there's nothing to benchmark this against. And I would certainly disagree as to the reason Android/Samsung does not sell a 4" phone -- because the money was in making giant phones which Apple did not make until a year ago. It was a way to differentiate them from Apple. Android platform sold numerous 5S-sized models ... until they didn't. Apple is still doing quite well selling the 5C/5S models for the last two years since they introduced two new 6 models. Almost a third of customers from a recent survey are still buying and using them.

One day, when all developers are supporting it, you will rely on it.

Perhaps....but that day isn't today or really any time soon I'd wager.

It's a big quandary for developers since it's an iPhone only feature for the foreseeable future. It can only get so "necessary" when that's the case.

You don't think Apple researched this before releasing the 6/6+ last year?

If there was such strong demand for a 4 inch premium phone they would have never stopped making them.

Android had well over a year to make a 4 inch premium phone to fill the niche left open by Apple. But NONE of them are. So are you telling me Android makers and Apple are ALL WRONG?

Bottom line is there are very few who will spend premium dollars for a 4 inch phone. Deal with it. The world has changed. This is as idiotic as saying there is strong demand for a 3.5 inch premium phone. The world has changed.

Kuo expects the new 4-inch iPhone to have an A9 chip manufactured by both TSMC and Samsung

If this is true, no thanks! I don't want the "Intel/AMD" flavor conspiracy for a phone option.
I have the option of buying another iPhone 5S that I am running now for free with another 2 year commitment (no joke).

My point is if there was such a strong market for 4 inch premium phones Android makers would start making 4 inch phones. They are not. The only explanation is the market has spoken and very few want to pay big bucks for a 4 inch phone.

How exactly would they do that research?

And how do you know nobody would spend premium money for a 4" flagship phone?
At one point, that's all Apple made and it sold just fine.

There is simply no way to actually test this other than a 3 size lineup with feature parity across the line.

We need to leave Android out of this honestly. The decisions made on that side of the fence are their own animal with a lot of different players involved.
