No, I haven’t ordered. I live near an apple store. Will pop in next week and see. Both would be ok workflow wise, but I don’t think the air is worth the price when the pro can be had for slightly more with better screen and more ports - especially as it doesn’t look much thicker really. There are only a few reviewers I would trust. Anyone maxing out to cause it to throttle is a waste of time watching …. No one’s buying an air to do that sort of work. I’m more influenced by value for money, and I’m not seeing it.
If I had a need for more ports on my Mac, I would have considered the 14" pro. I already have an OWC dock. It is possible I could have saved a few dollars getting the 14" anyway but, I am not sure I would have still been happy knowing I didn't really have a need for so much on said computer. If after using the M2 for the test period I find I am unhappy with the results, I can return it and stick with my M1 MBA and keep offloading data etc., or re-evaluate the 14" / per dollar / actual use.

Blah, blah, blah. Chip shortage, 1 chip slower than 2. No fan, what doesn’t dissipate heat like a fan, who knew? Oh wait, everyone knew that. Wow

The base model is a dud.
Other than that, it is basically an ultra premium ultrabook, with recommended starting price of $1600 (for 16/512 model, what should’ve been the standard).

And for $400 more, you can just get the 14” MacBook Pro. Prefect upselling strategy by Apple. The end goal is simply to push people into spending $2000 for a laptop.

In the U.K. with educational pricing, the m2 air 16/512 is £1629, and the 14 inch pro is £1708. It’s so close the air no longer makes sense if choosing between the two.

I disagree. Few people interested in this MBA are cross shopping it with a 14" MBP. IMO its real competition is the M1 MBA.

All said and done that looks stunning, I may have to buy one even though I am not in the market for one.

Mods don't ban me, I'm not picking on anyone I just made a visual representation of what I'm seeing as a neutral observer.

There seems to be a growing list of issues with the new Air and a can’t help but think it’s turning out to be a bit of a dud.

So far we’ve got:
  • Slower SSD speeds in base model
  • Fingerprints everywhere on Midnight colour
  • Heat issues with no fan
  • Aggressive throttling to manage heat issue
  • Anodising on Midnight noticeably chips around the ports
I want to like it but these seem to be quite a few over sights for a mature product. Especially compared with the near universal praise for the Pro it does feel Apple dropped the ball somewhat.
Anyone here? Trying to Blame it on Jony Ive now?

I agree that for the base model, the M1 Macbook Air is the better buy, especially with the SSD bottleneck. But once you BTO to 16/512, many users will simply see the price delta getting smaller and smaller to the base 14" Macbook Pro, where you get the ports and promotion display. Not all consumers will think that way, but some will, and either way, Apple wins, aka people spending more money.

Bringing out the jealous and those that can't afford one now.

It‘s usually one of two groups of people. It’s either the guy who just regurgitates whatever he heard/read, in an attempt to sound smart, or in the know, when deep down has absolutely no clue what he’s talking about & would probably be unable to have a face to face conversation about the topic without access to the internet.

Or, it’s the group that isn’t getting the new product for whatever reason (low interest/can’t afford it) & their sole purpose in life becomes: kill the excitement of anyone who is.

Who’s the customer for this? Not engineers and not grandma, either.

Yes, because the only people in the world are engineers and grandmothers 😂

I’m a former software engineer, back in grad school for my second career which involves a ton of research and writing, and my 16/512 starlight is on its way to replace my 2017 intel MBP and I couldn’t be more excited for a slim, light, ultra portable laptop that will replace that old butterfly beast and do everything I need for years to come.

Two of these are just centered around one of the four color options.... And another two are just two sides of the same issue.

Most everyone who reviewed this machine raved about it. You're cherry picking.
Those reviews come from people who got advanced units, which means Apple-bought reviews. I'll wait for independent reviews to further understand the new MBA. Although, to be honest, I already detest it on design alone.

do you have evidence of those reviews being 'apple-bought'? and are you saying that sites like cnet, the verge... are giving good reviews because of that? 🤔

what's wrong with the design? it's slim, stylish, minimal, tasteful. but yes! like you, this is just my opinion...

A wee bit strange forum. Flamebaits thrown on a regular basis, people standing by picking them up. Why? 🤔

On topic: The base model's SSD is slower, that's true (as far as we've been told at the moment by early reviews). Thermal throttling isn't new (it's a fanless model, there are models with fans, work out the logic). Colour issues, IDK.
