Did not see this coming at ALL. Not even an announcement at an event.

I was honestly expecting something less exciting than this. Given the hype around new AirPods I would have thought they would save these for Monday.

Also if they are comfortable launching all of these things with just a press release they must REALLY be confident in whatever is coming on Monday.

The people in question have been bang on the money for the iMac update, iPad Mini, iPad Air, and Airpods speedbump today...I don't know why I wouldn't believe the part about Airpods 2 proper coming later this year.

This is like the Macbook Air in the old chassis getting a clock speed bump before the actual new Macbook Air.

These are Airpods 2. Look at the fine print on Apple's website....all the way at the bottom.

"Testing conducted by Apple in February 2019 using preproduction AirPods (2nd generation)"

Seems very expensive at £40 premium for just wireless charging.

I think all options should have that case as standard. You don't see iPhones with/without wireless charging for £40 less.

It's fragmentation.

$40 to upgrade to wireless AirPods charging case, yet you’re more likely to to be next to a lightening cable than a wireless charging mat.

Now If it was like the Samsung where you can charge your AirPods case off of your phones back, then I think it’s worth it.

Love to see some reviews that show the battery real world improvement. 50% improved life I am highly skeptical given how manufacturers inflate battery life estimates.

Still won’t fit my ears, so hard pass. Looking forward to H1 being used in a device with, say, silicone tips.

The rumors say the new iPhone will do that.

Not sure of the utility of a charging case for like a regular wireless charger.

That tells me we're going to see AirPower, perhaps tomorrow or Friday and the iPhone refresh will provide reverse wireless charging for accessories like AirPods, watch and perhaps Pencil 2.

I also think the lack of MacBook Pros indicate WWDC will have a "pro" focus, with a Mac Pro preview and new MacBook Pros.

Finally, since it's WWDC, I think there will be a new MacBook running ARM.

That leaves September for iPhone and Watch and perhaps an updated iPad Pro and MB Air or Mac Mini, although I think the consumer Macs might just get a press release refresh like the iMacs.

I had my AirPods since launch. Convenience without wires was nice but pulling phone out of pocket to change volume just sucked. Siri is not an option. I got too wrapped up in the convenience thing that I was ignoring the actual sound quality. With the batteries lasting less than half of what they did originally, after 2 years I sold them for $60 so the 2 years use cost me $100. Now I'm back to wired and extremely better sound quality AND a handy and well missed volume control within easy reach. No more AirPods for me.

Wish they added waterproofing and it came with the wireless charging case by default. No Bluetooth 5.0 and then Siri :-(

'Official' waterproofing would have been nice. Fun story, though: My old pair went through the washer and dryer, with no apparent ill effects. IIRC they were even outside the case.

I’m 7 months in on my gen 1 AirPods that work just fine. This is not a compelling upgrade except for those first adopters that have little battery life left. Also I don’t think this is the true gen 2 as we know health monitoring features are coming as well as improved sound. This is a money grab. Thanks Tim

The only thing you can expect later this year is more colors.

Maybe there will be AirPods Pro who knows but this is 2nd generation and there won’t be 3rd gen this year.

I ordered mine about 45 min ago. Can't wait! Mine only last two hours now (got them two years ago).

This is a REALLY good take. Plus the "meh" announcement via press release. I'll wait for the next version, I think.

I agree. There is a reason they didn't name these "AirPods 2" or "AirPods 2.0" -- they're going to be releasing the actual 2nd generation product before the end of the year.

I got super excited when I saw this announcement but what would I really be upgrading for? Hype? My first generation AirPods still hold a great charge and there is nothing currently wrong with them. The wireless charging case is awesome for $79... but ever since the iPhone X I kept telling myself I was going to switch to wireless charging and I still haven't made the switch as of present day; I guess subconsciously I'm not really that interested in it nor do I need it? Who knows.

Based on what I'm seeing here it is doesn't look like these have any MAJOR improvements and I feel like AirPods 2 will house some major improvements. Should I wait for AirPods 2? Probably.

On the other hand if my AirPods decide to start crapping out before an AirPods 2 announcement or the end of the year, I will certainly upgrade to these.
