I wanted the black color so much, little disappointed it never happened. Guessing later in the year they will do more colors. Hope people don’t regret not waiting

For those talking of another "AirPods 2" coming later this year, due to the other rumours of health/black airpods, if you read the small print on Apples website, it clearly says AirPods (2nd generation) meaning these are the actual AirPods 2.

11. Testing conducted by Apple in February 2019 using pre-production AirPods (2nd generation), Charging Case, and Wireless Charging Case units and software paired with iPhone XS Max units and pre-release software.

Has Apple ever done product refreshes / updates like this—no event, this many products, trickled out over a week? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any.

Nor can I. I probably won't be watching the keynote as I don't expect a "one more thing" at the end (yup, still waiting for the SE2). I just don't care at all about all the subscription fuzz. Actually, I do and I don't favor moving to subscriptions instead of buying licenses. It will probably be just Apple justifying subscriptions over licensing & updating which, below the line, just means getting even more money from us. OTOH their news-feed-subscriptions might be interesting. I'll read it in the blogs.

Why do people buy airpods when there are VASTLY better options out there at the same price point??

I agree. There is a reason they didn't name these "AirPods 2" or "AirPods 2.0" -- they're going to be releasing the actual 2nd generation product before the end of the year.

I got super excited when I saw this announcement but what would I really be upgrading for? Hype? My first generation AirPods still hold a great charge and there is nothing currently wrong with them. The wireless charging case is awesome for $79... but ever since the iPhone X I kept telling myself I was going to switch to wireless charging and I still haven't made the switch as of present day; I guess subconsciously I'm not really that interested in it nor do I need it? Who knows.

Based on what I'm seeing here it is doesn't look like these have any MAJOR improvements and I feel like AirPods 2 will house some major improvements. Should I wait for AirPods 2? Probably.

On the other hand if my AirPods decide to start crapping out before an AirPods 2 announcement or the end of the year, I will certainly upgrade to these.
Spot on, and I feel the exact same way. Nothing this week is compelling me to rush out to upgrade my current crop of products. Well said.

No chance. They got new chip. It will be a couple of years at earliest for the next update.
Although I understand your logic for this, I think you may not be correct. If Apple is as serious about health monitoring as they claim, I think they'll want to get something out ASAP with those feature added. Though perhaps the issue remains the ability to miniaturize those components. As always, we'll wait for Ming Chi Kuo's take!

I don't really care about these because they don't fit my ears anyway... but if I was in the market for these I would be pretty pissed that Apple didn't include wireless charger for $159..... It seems like they are just not learning and continue their stubborn gouging. These will still sell like hotcakes so it doesn't matter I guess.

You answered your own post, they have nothing to learn as long as they "sell like hotcakes".
If the consumer were speaking with their wallet....

Airpods 1 (gen. 2)

Next:
Airpods 2 (gen 1)

Still won’t fit my ears, so hard pass. Looking forward to H1 being used in a device with, say, silicone tips.

This. All of this. It’s hard to tell which are actually worse sounding headphones — beats or AirPods, but the one thing that’s very apparent is that you can get vastly better sound at less than half the price with actual IEMs.

I am all in on the Apple ecosystem, and the single thing that keeps tempting me to leave it alll behind is their inexplicable insistence on awful audio.

Just ordered a pair, my 2-year-old originals were starting to fade on battery life.

I wish there was a Space Grey option...maybe for Gen 3.

Skipped wireless charging, I don’t see using it with AirPods...however, if they do a Samsung style “charge off the back of your iPhone” deal, I might switch.

Ordered. This is nice as my gen 1’s last 40 minutes of talk time. I guess not surprising as they are well over 2 years old with so many conference calls.

I'm in the exact same boat. My AirPods have really become an essential part of my daily life as I'm on the phone constantly for my job. Instant order with wireless case for me.

I was waiting on these, but I am lost on the actual improvements. Better sound? Better noise cancellation? Anything along those lines?

Looks like a nothing update. Apple is waiting on the real airpod update (sound, noise cancelation, etc).

I had my AirPods since launch. Convenience without wires was nice but pulling phone out of pocket to change volume just sucked. Siri is not an option. I got too wrapped up in the convenience thing that I was ignoring the actual sound quality. With the batteries lasting less than half of what they did originally, after 2 years I sold them for $60 so the 2 years use cost me $100. Now I'm back to wired and extremely better sound quality AND a handy and well missed volume control within easy reach. No more AirPods for me.

Wired sounds better, but I find it really inconvenient while I'm outdoors. I find wired headphones great at home or at my desk, and thank goodness Macs still have the old jack so I don't need an adapter.
AirPods are great for listening to podcast and making phone call, exactly my use case. I don't listen to music with them, I prefer better quality if I want to enjoy a good song

These are Airpods 2. Look at the fine print on Apple's website....all the way at the bottom.

"Testing conducted by Apple in February 2019 using preproduction AirPods (2nd generation)"
Even if these bear the name "2" or "2nd Generation", that has no bearing at all on whether Apple can release something later in the year. They might be called...."3rd Generation". Or they might be a whole new product that combines AirPods with health monitoring features, for which Apple can charge more. Kind of reminds you of the new iPads, doesn't it? This is the week for releases for the masses. Envision an AirPods Pro being released with the new iPhone in September or the new iPads Pro in October / November. Right before the biggest spending quarter of the year.

Kind of fits, doesn't it?
