I think you hit the nail directly on the head. The MacBook Pro with TouchBar is in fact a toy to be used for goofy things that teenagers and twenty somethings use to amuse themselves and that is how it should be evaluated. The iPhone works great for all those fart apps. Both of which describe Apple's user base and Apple certainly wants to make that user base happy. Us professionals that rely on more, not so much.

That explains why many pros are saying they like it.... oops, you're embarrassing yourself.

All I can think when I read the headline is an app that lets you to play piano on the MacBook Pro's Touch Bar... as in, being allowed to, giving permission to...

As for the actual app... it's a fun novelty, and that's fine.

Anyway, if Steve Jobs had put the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro 10 years ago, people here would have been all starry-eyed, imagining all the possibilities. Now it's just a bunch of uninformed "stupid emoji bar" comments over and over and over and over.

I disagree. I don't believe he would have done it and even if he had I don't believe it would've been released in its current form or that it would've been universally or even widely praised. I've tried it on the store models several times and if doesn't feel right. It's not sensitive enough. It's slower than physical keys. It can't do anything that can't be achieved on-screen or with the old physical keys quicker and better. It's a gimmick I don't want just like this ridiculous app.

And if Apple thought touch screens were better and more versatile than physical keys why didn't they replace the whole keyboard with a flat glass surface so it's like typing on an iPad? Did they not have the "courage" or is it because typing on an iPad with its lack of tactile sensation and feedback is worse. Why does Apple sell a physical keyboard case for its iPad if the on-screen keyboard is better?

All of this points to inconsistency and mixed messages that highlight Apple has turned a corner for the worse. The people in charge care more about trying to hoodwink a gullible public and keeping the gravy train of profits flowing. This is about planned obsolescence and adding a feature they can incrementally update over the next 3-4 upgrades at the expense of usability because there's almost nothing else they can do to the rest of the computer.

This is not worthy of being mentioned during small talk at a company Holiday party, much less as a "news" story here. SMH...

I think MacRumors knows anything silly or critical about the new Macabooks is popular.

If you've been following MacRumors for the past few years and you can't understand why people here are unhappy, I guess there is just no explanation that would help you understand. o_O

I love this. Perfect comment! I've been a Mac user since the Performa LC 630 and an iPhone user since the 3G (the first one available outside the US). I've owned or used since then a PowerMac G3, 12" PowerBook, Cube, iMac G4, iMac G5, 17" MacBook Pro, Cheesegrater Xeon Mac Pro and two models of 15" retina MacBook Pro. I always provide articulate reasons about why I'm critical of anything Apple does (or more often doesn't do) unlike some of the moronic comments already in this thread. About the best thing I can say regarding the touch bar is it may be better in future versions but this version sucks and there's no way I want it. I hope they release a non Touch-bar 15" model but I think they're afraid to because they know so money people will choose it so they'd have to find some way to cripple it if they do.

Is it perhaps because many "people here" don't understand that Apple are under no obligation to create and sell what many "people here" believe they are entitled to?
Oh my God. This! I mean Apple doesn't owe anyone anything. If people are so unhappy with Apples devices, they should spend less time whining and more time searching for a product that meets their needs. TBH I wish Apple would go back to being a more "boutique" style company and only create for the "professionals" and less for the average consumer.

This is a powerful image, because this beautiful Steinway Model D still works without the need for electricity, will never need a software/firmware update, and -if you properly care for it- will still work and have purpose decades after every piece of electronic equipment we use has long since ceased to be functional or useful. All a great piano needs is hands skillfully applied to make beautiful music.

I don't think they would - they pulled the post iPod launch thread out of the archives recently and it read just like every product reaction today on here, full of hate and vitriol and people telling Apple what they should be doing...

We're not criticizing, we're coaching...

I like the new MacBook, but I wouldn't fool myself into believing windows users who have full on touch screens are jealous of the touch bar

Exactly...no one but Mac users gives a damn about touch bar. Touchscreen systems have been around for years at this point so it would be taking a major step back.

I think you just embarrassed yourself. Where's your proof of pros who like it vs the pros who don't like it? Also, define "pro." It seems like everyone has their own definition what a pro really is. A pro, who does their profession as their main source of income. A pro, who says they're a pro by just saying it. A pro, who's a Linux expert. A pro, who does this as a hobby. A pro, who works for Gartner and actually does analytic research on market trend and lifecycle. A pro, is such a word where everyone tries to use to justify that they are more right than others. Endless pro definition...and it can still change from the same person depending on the wind carrying their fart. Also, the original author was just expressing their opinion, no factual statement, whereas yours you used some supposedly fact without any proof.

Here's the blunt truth - It's an underpowered, overpriced, and neutered laptop. I cannot for the life of me see why fan boys keep on making excuses for Apple :p.

It's actually quite hilarious to see, It's like If anyone says anything critical about Apple's direction they get offended like I just insulted their mother or something.

I feel like they really screwed us all over, I've been an Apple user for years and I recently switch because I'm tired of Apple's direction. I feel like Microsoft is really innovating more than Apple is at this point. Role reversal I guess? So I switched and I'm happy.

I know I'll get comments like "You don't have to buy it", well actually once you're tied to an ecosystem you might just have to buy it. Fortunate for me most apps are already available on Windows, so it was pretty much painless. Also I think Windows 10 has reached the same level of polish so it was a nice change.

I agree 100%. Apple fanboy will defend any product made from Apple...I'm thinking they want to show off that they are the 10%er, since Apple has just about that of the market share. What's more funny is when folks supposedly copy off of Apple, Apple fanboy is very happy...but when Apple copies from android then it's fair good. Sadly a lot of what Apple has came from android. Everyone copies off from each other Apple fanboys.

They're literally on the internet. Wow, keep digging yourself deeper, mate. Sad.

LOL, typical anti-Apple fanboy.

the idea of having a touchbar is ridiculous already, and now this. I think the app developer just want to make a joke of the new macbook pro.

Jesus, you people take everything way too seriously. Nobody is expecting a musician to write the next great piano sonata on the touch bar. It's just a goofy thing you can do. Can we not make every minor, silly app an excuse to claim the touch bar is a stupid gimmick and actually judge it on the improvements it's meant to offer now and/or with future app updates?
Agreed. I'm not about to jump on the "oh-so-trendy-the-new-macbook-pro-sucks-bandwagon". I've been keeping an open mind and in the past week stopped into my local Apple store to play with it. To me it is a very impressive machine, and I think a lot of pros will find it very useable. The contextual items that appear on the touchbar appeared very useful, and this can only improve (limited only by the imaginations of developers).

I remain at a loss to understand how a touch screen is useful on a laptop computer. To use a touch screen, you have to suspend your arms in the air -- hardly comfortable. Touch screens are perfect -- for keyboard-less tablets. I do use my apple bluetooth keyboard with my iPad on occasion, and the touch-screen/keyboard combo works quite well when the screen is that close -- the iPad screen is almost like a touchbar at that distance.

When I get another Mac next year, it is still likely to be what I hope is an updated iMac, but the new MacBook Pro impresses me after playing with one for a bit, and I'm still not ruling it out.

Its really getting strange to watch as i get older and have been around the block to see release after release and all the reactions that come with it. I get liking a product and wanting to give apple the benefit of the doubt... a little bit. But when they raise the price $400, make the keyboard worse to type on, tout a gimmicky touchbar as if its some new revolution, increase the size of the trackpad to comical proportions so you're always resting your palms on it and accidentally pressing buttons, etc...not to mention all the issues people are having with blown speakers, graphics issues, screen issues and crap battery life...i honestly don't know how even the most hardened of fanboys don't stop and say "yeah...thats...thats a bunch of bs right there". When you're paying INSANELY high prices for lower spec'd products, you expect at the very least for them to be relatively bug and problem free. That was what was known as "it just works". Remember?

I mean...at what point after having problem after problem do you say you're done with a product? I know someone that is on their 3rd return of a macbook due to issues. If this was any other brand and the marketing was taken away, you would leave a review of this product and say "this crap isn't reliable. Isn't quality. Not buying again". Apple gets a total pass on some things and overblown hate on others. It's like living in some twisted altered reality where up is down and down is up.

I've always believed in using the right tool for the job and right now its not a mac computer. And that really sucks. I've recently after not using windows for a long time given windows 10 a try and my god...i've been missing out on some goodies. Half the price, twice the specs and none of the compromises. Microsoft has really stepped it up and i never would have really paid attention to them if not for the new macbooks being so lackluster.
