Jesus, you people take everything way too seriously. Nobody is expecting a musician to write the next great piano sonata on the touch bar. It's just a goofy thing you can do. Can we not make every minor, silly app an excuse to claim the touch bar is a stupid gimmick and actually judge it on the improvements it's meant to offer now and/or with future app updates?

Thanks for writing this! Completely agree. I think many people (though I share their concerns) aren't happy the way Apple is going, so they are quite negative. But on this post they are going over the top. It's just so many people are frustrated with Dongle head Tim, it's destroying the luv they had for Apple.

But in this case, you are right. It's just something fun that someone did. I really think that Apple is going to do a lot more touch screen on the key boards. It wouldn't surprise me if keys will have e-ink screens soon. I bet that's the way they will go!

Yep. You just knew the comments would be filled with posts from what must be some of the most joyless people in the universe.

I dunno. I bet the civilians in Aleppo are pretty joyless right now, and could probably give the alledged "joyless MacRumors forum posters" a run for their money.

Although, when it comes to hyperbole, they probably would get their butts handed to them from some of the posters around here.

Looks handy. I'm sure all the pro musicians are dying to get this machine...

I'm sorry but you guys have got it wrong this time.

If you've ever used a notation software or DAW to sequence tracks you *know* having a midi keyboard between you and your Mac just to input notes (not playing, just inputting a sequence note by note) is clumsy.and annoying.

This is actually a pretty useful use case for a composer or songwriter.

I've got an idea that Apple hasn't thought of, expand the touch bar just a little... maybe to the top of the viewing screen. Oh wait... that would be copying Microsoft Surface studio. Forget it.

Developer: Makes a fun app not to be taken seriously.
MacRumors members: Innovation my ass. Apple under Tim Cook is dead and this is proof.

How would you open/close the laptop if the touchbar started where the function keys used to be and spread up into the display all the way up to the top? Also, where would you put the display where you actually look at the UI for MacOS?

Exactly...no one but Mac users gives a damn about touch bar. Touchscreen systems have been around for years at this point so it would be taking a major step back.

But reaching up on a touchscreen to change the tool size in Photoshop is a horrible user experience - not to mention you've then left fingerprints and grease on your screen where you're trying to do colour accurate work...

I also can't have specialised shortcut keys that work as macros on a touchscreen without them having to float on top of all other applications and waste screen space (and even then I have to reach up from the keyboard to trigger them)

One year from now, the Touch Bar will become mainstream across Mac and PC machines. Mark my words.

Unlikely because that would require a standard be set and I'm pretty sure Apple would have something to say about that.

Sure, Dell or HP or Asus could come out with something that resembles the Touch Bar, but what software would work with it? None. It works with Apple because they control the hardware and the software. Not so much on the PC side.

Fast forward 10 years - do you think we'll still be using the Touch Bar?

I think a full touch screen is an inevitability so I just see the Touch Bar as a patentable feature that Apple think sets them apart from the competition. But I still think, ultimately, the TB is just a stop-gap until Macs are all touchscreen.

As such, I disagree - they won't be on any PCs and will be on Macs for only a few years.

It's the internet mob cool kids club. Everyone (non owners) pile on because it's the trendy thing to do. This is just a proof of concept. The 2016 tMBP could cure cancer and people would still blast it for the lolz. Internet culture is strange, especially from angry "professionals."

Fart apps don't render the entire iPhone useless. Same thing here.

Is it perhaps because many "people here" don't understand that Apple are under no obligation to create and sell what many "people here" believe they are entitled to?

Or maybe the people here are not blind fanboys who while being paddled by Apple scream "thank you sir may I have another".

The 2016 tMBP could also atom on your testicles every time you receive an email and people would still rave how magical it is.

Sadly, I have to agree with that. It just seems more like a gimmick and a halfway solution than anything.

Apple can only 'paddle' customers if customers allow themselves to be in a position to be paddled.
Anybody claiming to have been using Apple products for years has had ample time to observe and react to apple's strategies & focus. And anybody who still calls him or herself a 'fan', 'loyal', 'supporter' - of Apple or of any brand - is an idiot.
Apple is nobody's mother, they're a massive corporation, some of their products are very good, some aren't. Some are just right for my needs, some are not useful.
It can't be so hard to work out what device one needs, then research which device does the job? Or switch to new platform/device/software? Or come up with workarounds?
Perhaps many people believed they'd been promised a perfect future, and suddenly reality crashing in? The angry whining would be a symptom. Being sceptical & rational could be first steps towards avoiding disappointment & bitterness.

I agree in many respects. Many of us are just totally miffed at what Apple are doing right now and their pitiful output under Cook. I used to be a die hard fan boy and am still very much in the eco system. But I've been far more sceptical and cynical of them over the past couple years.

"]How 'bout everyone take a breath, sip some decaf, and realize this is just a cute proof of concept. Reminds me of the Church's early position on the fork."

You are talking to people who waited forever to get a real MB-PRO update and got a sealed and soldered hub for endless dongless capped at 16GB of RAM. I don't think any of these people want to hear about cute.

Boy. Wish I had a touchbar so I could add a smiley emoji just like Craig showed us. First thing.
