Well I just noticed that my Apple Folio back is starting to ripple/wrinkle. It is very subtle to the eye, but as I hold it in landscape mode I can feel it with my fingers.

The area in question is exactly the area my fingers hit while I hold it flipped open in landscape mode. The other parts of the back of the folio, that don't get handled as much, show no wrinkles. Heck, if this was leather I guess I'd be into the look

There seems to be thin rubberized skin over an elongated "wave" design for strength. I saw a picture, in these forums, the edge layers separating and it clearly showed a "teeth" like substructure from the exposed side.

I'm very disappointed in this, especially for the high price of the product. My previous iPad accessories had no issues even after many months/years of use. Yes, a trip to the Apple Store is in order. I'll have to wait until the weather calms down here as travel is a bit dicey. Does anyone think newer versions will be any better. If not maybe I'll try for a refund.

Here is a picture that I converted to B&W so that they are easier to see.

What the heck Apple! I just wish I could find a really good leather replacement.

My launch day folio is doing the exact same thing in multiple places. I considered trying to return it but I suspect the new one will do the same.

I think I'll head out to the Apple Store this week and see what they say. I thought about it in my earlier posting. But the weather has been iffy where I live. Also I'm not a "mall rat" ;)

My guess is that Apple will replace it. If there was a better third party alternative I would go for that. First world problems I know, but the Apple Folio isn't cheap.

The iPad has a lot of couch lap time so I prefer the multiple-fold type of folio. This reminds me that I'd better bring along my Vaja sleeve/pouch to make sure a possible third party solution fits.

As you say the Apple Folio will probably do it again. Doesn't Apple test their accessories in the field before release?

Update on the Apple Folio

Update on the Apple Folio finish issue. If you don't want the whole "Cry Baby Story" Just know Apple will replace it. I do have Apple Care +, but I do not know if that helped. Read the rest only if you think you have similar problems.
------
I did go to the local Apple Store today. I sat on the little cube seat for only a couple of minutes. So service was fast on a Wed. afternoon.

A staff member reviewed the damage, and inspected all parts of the cover, inside and out. He did ask if I got it wet, and also inspected my iPad. He entered the serial number of my iPad into his system.

I assume he looking for ancillary tell tale water damage on the rest of the case. I told him that that it never got wet. I reiterated that the damage is located right where I hold it with the folio folded in a wedge on my lap.

He did want to see the original packaging for the folio. Also he made me turn off my "Find My Phone" on my iPad. Why I don't know. I think he also wanted to see if the iPad had been damaged in any way.

Bottom line Apple will replace it. None in stock. So I'll get an e-mail and call when one is available. In the meantime I get to use the original.

Apple wants the original packaging when the exchange is eventually made. Heck, I'm glad I kept it as I've been on a junk cleaning binge of late. I have many Apple product boxes from years of being a fanboy ;)

So in the end I was treated well. So far so good. I hope it doesn't occur again.

Mine has the same thing; did you exchange it yet or just waiting?

The only problem I had with going with an exchange is that I knew I would have to break it in all over again. I had the original folding almost a good as my previously owned leather iPad front cover. Sort of like flipping a Balisong.:p

I also think the edges on the 2018 iPad folio are sharp when new. I know some people discount that observation. But as I used the new one I thought, "Here we go again".

I really need to re-start my search third party leather folio. if I could find one with the design attributes of the Apple Folio I'd jump on it.

The ones I’ve had all do what MCDJ posted. I’ve gone through three now, on the fourth that’s already doing the same thing.

What yours is doing is from moisture. Either sweaty hands or water droplets got on your cover.
I got a third one and it’s doing the same thing, 3 days in.

Well it is clear to me that the natural moisture of my hand caused the damage on my folio. I wasn’t in a steam room or in a hot environment. So I think Apple needs to test better and come up with a better product.

Hmm, had mine for months now & no signs of this issue. Very weird!

Break it in? How are you folding it?

Simply folding it in a "triangle" behind the iPad, which is my preferred folio position, even on my lap. Same fold used for desktop use.

When new I find the "triangle fold" didn't want to stay tucked in. Now with more use, in that position, it stays put. I know, a small thing. I don't know maybe i'm to finicky :) I still want a leather folio with magnet attachment!

I’m on my second folio. I returned the 1st one because it had these weird little sharpish “teeth” along the edge of the cover. I didn’t notice it at first.

The replacement felt perfect smooth. At first.

Lo and behold after about 2 weeks with the replacement, I just noticed the exact same tiny teeth have developed in the same spot where I hold it.

Mine is looking exactly the same - about 6 months old. Might sound a but fussy, but for what they cost do you think Apple will replace it?

Nah, usually Apple is pretty lax on a legitimate reason to repair/replace something. Though there are those chances you could meet a difficult employee, but other than that you should give it a shot.

My replacement is doing the wavy thing again on the surface, again. I’ve even using a tray so I’m not physically holding it as much.

This is exactly what is happening to my Smart Keyboard for my 11 inch iPad Pro. It’s pretty bad. I have a thread I started in this particular forum if you want to see the picture. I was going to take it in and hopefully they get a replacement. I was a bit concerned because its cosmetic and maybe they will say it’s my fault for whatever reason. But this appears to be a real issue with Smart Keyboards and Folios....

Well, I was told I must have sweaty hands by the Apple rep. A bit insulting I think. Evidently there are a lot of nervous iPad Folio owners out there ;)
