MiPads probably need a lightning to USBC cable to charge this pencil using their iPad.
Like I said, goofy juice. This pencil will hold magnetically to newer ipads, but doesn't have pressure sensitivity. And won’t charge magnetically. This pencil seems to exist just to piss of artists.

What confuses me most is that it's not even available yet - this is such a minor release that surely it should have been a press release and "Available now".

It's not like it's something many people (anyone?) are eagerly anticipating.
It’s to keep stakeholders mildly happy mid-October. They probably planned to announce more new hardware but aren’t ready yet.

This obviously presages the introduction of an all USB-C lineup for the iPad. It may very well mean there will be new lower end iPads before the holidays.

c'mon guys, tim wants us to save money by not releasing new or upgraded products going into holiday season.

also, tim: "i'm selling you guys our next new product. the apple vision pro next year, for $3,499. we hope you gonna love it"

I’m surprised they didn’t do it today but this is exactly what I think as well. Maybe they’re just getting rid of excess stock currently.

not so cool downgrade, I have tried the 2nd generation pencil and pressure sensitivity is a must.

Do they really need 3 tiers of pencil, spaced only $50 apart from bottom to top?

Seems VERY weird.

.... when your Stylist product grid is about to become more complicated than the main product grid.... and your compatibility chart is so complex they didn't even put it into a graphic....

With the announcement of the new Apple Pencil (USB-C), none of the iPads are marked ’New’. Just yesterday, the iPad Pro and base iPad still had the ’New’ marking. Could mean that new iPads are on the way, perhaps in time for the new Apple Pencil launch in November?

Examples? Have you been able to directly compare them to this one yet?
My partner bought one (don't know if i'm allowed to link to it here?) and it has magnetic pair/charge, shows the battery percentage (paired with BT), it supports tilt but similarly does not have pressure sensitivity. Otherwise looks and works indistinguishably from a real Apple Pencil. Current price on Amazon is $18.99

People need to read the link in the article.

This is not a replacement or next generation product. It's a lower tier product. It drops the following features:

- Pressure sensitivity
- Magnetic pairing & charging (it can be stored, but not charged/paired)
- Double tap to change tools
- Engraving

I just don’t understand why though. They need to standardize on one Pencil. If anything this should have replaced the first generation leaving only two still. Now it’s even more confusing.

apple likes people that gets confused when buying their products lol.

My money is still on Apple spec-bumping Air, mini and 10.9 for Q4 to boost sales (this new Apple Pencil semi-SE won't accomplish that alone, obviously).

Then iPads Pro M3 drop in early Q2 2023 and (total) iPad sales are back to great again.

No. Magnet, but no magnetic charging.

Also, no double tap and no pressure sensitivity.

Totally confusing to introduce yet another pencil with yet another feature subset. Presumably they'll keep selling all of them. They had a chance to reduce the mess, and they made it bigger.
This is likely to help build interest around the product line, capture that more price-sensitive market and create incentive to spend ‘only $20 more’ or ‘just $30 more’ for the “full-featured” models.

That’s what I was thinking. What’s the point of having three Pencil models available? Seems confusing to the end user. Maybe Gen 1 sticks around until there are no more Lightning iPads. Apple’s product line has gotten to be a bit of a mess again.
I think that’s the likely outcome. Perhaps the 11th-gen base iPad becomes compatible with the Pencil 2, so Apple keeps the Pencil 1 around until the 10th gen is discontinued. Then it’s just the Pencil USB-C and the Pencil 2. That could be another year or two, since it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple keeps the 10th gen around as the “budget” model.

The whole iPad accessory situation is a bit of a mess (keyboards specific to one model, different Pencils for different modelsetc). This is a first step toward improving it, since this Pencil is compatible with all USB-C iPads and not just the Pro/Air.

I agree this sounds confusing at the moment. But this could be a precursor to the discontinuing of the 9th gen iPad and Apple Pencil 1. If those two disappear, then things clear up. This new Pencil offers less functionality than the Pencil 1 but at a lower price.
