so the new pencil does have magnets and can be attached to the ipad just for storage only or it does not have magnets?
When magnetically attached…

It doesn’t. It makes you think it should have been released with the iPad 10th Gen and was delayed.
Maybe so, but still begs to question if that’s the reasoning, why does it take a $3 trillion company this long to create a new pencil since the last one came out five years ago?

Maybe they put everybody that would’ve worked on the pencil or new iPads on the Apple Vision Pro.

Confusing lineup, but I see the logic:

  • 1st-gen remains available because it offers Lightning charging.
  • 2nd-gen remains available because it's currently the "high-end" model.
  • Latest Pencil is essentially a replacement for the 1st-gen with USB-C charging.
  • Rumour: Expect a "Pro" model that replaces the 2nd-gen.
But again, it’s not a gen 1 replacement, since they work with different iPad models.

I think a lot is simple out of ignorance ("want to know that it works"), as these clones work just as well as the Logitech Crayon, since the use the same tech. While the $15 probably don't have bluetooth (which basically only allows you to know battery life left from the iPad), the better ones have not only bluetooth but also magnetic charging and compatibility with lightning iPads, that this one lacks... And they cost half the price of this one.
I think many people don’t want to try to find one on Amazon that works by wading through reviews that either say ”great” or “it sucks.”
Paying a little bit extra to avoid the hassle is worth it to many people. Others saving a few Euros is worth it. To each their own.

I think that will forever hold the #1 spot of worst and dumbest design decision by Apple.

and apple still ignoring people's complaint.
i guess that thing is the only one remaining in jony ive's design that still alive after he left apple many years ago. lol

Man, features for a new pencil would be so easy:
Use the back as an eraser
Bring reactivity closer to Wacom
Edit the tip or the glass in a way that gives us a more paper-like writing/painting experience.
«Actionbutton(s)»
and probably many more things you could think of

Who needs a PencilSE?

This obviously presages the introduction of an all USB-C lineup for the iPad. It may very well mean there will be new lower end iPads before the holidays.
If that were the plan they’d have likely just announced the new base Pencil when they announced the new iPads.

The new model released today is the lite version while the current one is the pro version.

But I don't see the need of complicating the product line like this at all...the only way Tim can innovate is through marketing segmentation. That's all he understands.

I feel like whoever is in charge of picking out what features will or won’t go with new iPads has somebody with a lot of bad opinions who is steam rolling every other decision maker.

This pencil will work on some iPads that use the first gen pencil but mostly work on ones that use the second gen pencil. Aside from people who want to save a bit of money, who is this for? It feels like this was supposed to launch with the 10th gen iPad last year and is just super late. Worst of all it won’t work with previous lighting based iPads. So now there’s even more confusion in what customers should buy.

Also how much did the pressure sensitivity actually cost? This feels like somebody is actively trying to make the buying experience worse.

My partner bought one (don't know if i'm allowed to link to it here?) and it has magnetic pair/charge, shows the battery percentage (paired with BT), it supports tilt but similarly does not have pressure sensitivity. Otherwise looks and works indistinguishably from a real Apple Pencil. Current price on Amazon is $18.99
Thanks, but has a quality comparison been done yet with this new Apple Pencil? If not, any statement saying it's better is based on no data.

I just don’t understand why though. They need to standardize on one Pencil. If anything this should have replaced the first generation leaving only two still. Now it’s even more confusing.
They cant drop the first gen until they drop the last lightning ipads, bet that happens end of the year or early next

lol. this is such a cluster****.

this usb-c trend is terrible. who do we thank? we all know.
This seems slicker then the gen 1 and its protruding lightning plug, and it’s cheaper to boot, why the negativity?

Imagine buying this Apple Pencil to save $$$ and having to pull the cap and plug it in to charge versus slapping it on the side and not even thinking about it? Not sure if that's worth the savings.
Tbh until I finally was able to pick up a noname standalone charger for the gen 2 from amazon I was a bit jealous of the gen 1 pencil my wife has on her ipad because she could charge it separately without having to have it clinging to the ipad to charge. I hope the next gen “pro” pencil supports both wireless *and* usbc, both have their uses

Couldn’t they just replace the second gen? What a confusing line-up. What’s wrong with Apple?
