apple likes people that gets confused when buying their products lol.

I guess that's why they have a store full of Geniuses (do they still call them that?) to help you with your purchase. That used to seem like overkill but more and more it's like buying a car. Do you want the base trim package or the premium? How you set for cases and chargers? Make sure you get the matching Pencil. No not that one the more expensive one. And how about AppleCare?

Imagine buying this Apple Pencil to save $$$ and having to pull the cap and plug it in to charge versus slapping it on the side and not even thinking about it? Not sure if that's worth the savings.

With the announcement of the new Apple Pencil (USB-C), none of the iPads are marked ’New’. Just yesterday, the iPad Pro and base iPad still had the ’New’ marking. Could mean that new iPads are on the way, perhaps in time for the new Apple Pencil launch in November?
I think it's just because it's now released one year ago (-1 day).

Maybe it is gonna be a step to a more unified iPad line.

Not bad for $79, also reading the comments make you wonder what is the percentage of people who actually read the post lol

Interesting stuff. At least it makes more sense than my first thought from the thumbnail pic, which was that they were adding a camera to the pencil....

Having the cap slhde instead of pop off is an up from gen 1, but then again, now it needs a cable! And a C to C one at that, which remains rarer than A to C, at least in my world. Great that Lightning is gone, but it shouldn't come with such a gimped product. I guess the aim is to get people in for taking notes and then have them upgrade to a gen 2 ... or soon probably 3. I mean, artists do tend to have lots of different physical pencils, lol.

I think this could be how Apple is segmenting/targeting their market (which is still weird and confusing to consumers to have 3 different pencils)

Apple Pencil 1st Gen: All compatible iPads with Lightning
Apple Pencil USB-C: 10th Gen iPad
Apple Pencil 2: iPad mini 6th Gen, iPad Air 5th & 6th Gen, iPad Pro 2018 & newer

Granted the Apple Pencil USB-C (who in marketing comes up with naming now a days...) works with the 10th Gen iPad, 6th Gen iPad mini and iPad Pro 2018 models and newer, I do not think that is the target market for this one. If you think about it, the 1st Gen Apple Pencil was meant for iPad Pro then was expanded to non-pro models so it is a "Pro" pencil in a legacy sense.

No matter how you slice it, Apple has created a confusing product mix across their product offerings and is at risk of sinking back to the ridiculous variety of devices they had in the 90's over a simplified buying experience with a smaller product catalog.

That would have required a Lightning-to-Lightning cable for pairing, which doesn’t exist.
Only if they were adamant it charge from the port on the iPad; even then, they own Lightning, they can make any accessory they want - they already made the male to
male Lightning adapter to charge with a regular Lightning cable.

"The new Apple Pencil features low latency and tilt sensitivity like the other Apple Pencil models, but misses out on pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, double tap to change tools, and free engraving...It is compatible with all iPad models that feature a USB-C port..The new Apple Pencil is priced at $79."

Sorry to ask, how does this new pen differ from those $10 touch screen pen that requires no battery (if my need for stylus is limited to writing notes)?

Got me excited for a second but I guess it won't have magnetic charging like the Gen 2. It's still a nice upgrade for the Gen 1 though and probably a good choice for any new non-Pro/Air iPads going forward.

Not for charging, for pairing!

And the benefit of the Pencil 1 (and 2), despite its awkwardness, is that you only need your iPad to recharge it on the go.

More precision, mostly. The pens you mention are like an artificial finger, not much more precise than writing with an actual finger.

Holy **** LOL. Truly we are truly into "Tim Cook's Apple" territory now.

I feel bad for the guy in the other thread who was sure not only were new iPads coming but also multiple new Macs when this thing was going to be announced.

I can see this working out if they scrap the 1st gen in the near future. A lot of people complained about having to stick the lightning end into the iPad. Now you don’t, assuming you have a USB-C iPad.

Definitely wouldn’t run out just to buy this and a USB-C type iPad, but it could be a good move to reduce option-overload. I wonder if current tech allows for an “APencil ‘Pro’” with magnetic charging and USB-C.

I saw somewhere someone mentioned a lack of horizontal FaceID on the Pros because of the charging situation.

Is this compatible with the iPad (10th generation)? If so, this is perfect for my girlfriend. The new iPad has USB-C. I bought her that iPad and wasn't going to get her the Lightning Apple Pencil. If this new pencil is compatible, then she'll be able to charge it with the USB-C port on her iPad.
That seems like the only thing this is good for, and I’m surprised they didn’t release something like this when that came out instead of the embarrassing chain of adapters the 1st gen pencil needed with the 10th gen iPad. Also seems very close to Logitech’s usb-c crayon.

They say this new one still needs or can be paired, not sure why that would be needed? The Logitech Crayon doesn't need to be paired.
And the only thing that missed out on was pressure sensitivity and double tap, just like this one, right? does the hover need pairing?

Still seems odd to release this pencil without any new iPads. Makes you wonder if the plan was to release iPads along with it and something caused a delay in the shipments of the new/updated iPads.
It doesn’t. It makes you think it should have been released with the iPad 10th Gen and was delayed.

Confusing lineup, but I see the logic:

  • 1st-gen remains available because it offers Lightning charging.
  • 2nd-gen remains available because it's currently the "high-end" model.
  • Latest Pencil is essentially a replacement for the 1st-gen with USB-C charging.
  • Rumour: Expect a "Pro" model that replaces the 2nd-gen.

so the new pencil does have magnets and can be attached to the ipad just for storage only or it does not have magnets?
