Yeah, I saw the picture on the newsroom and didn't see the priceIt is cheaper though.

uh? it's not meant to supplant the pencil 2They REMOVED the wireless magnetic charging.
WTF?!
Which Pencil 1 features is it missing? Can we talk about the PRICE CUT without a reduction of functionality or selling the last-gen version??
EDIT: Take that back, it lacks a number of features of the 2nd gen. Seemed to good to be true for Apple.
Neither can you store the Apple Pencil (1st Gen) with the 9th Gen iPad anyway, so I don't see a huge loss for 9th Gen iPad users if Apple had them switch to Apple Pencil (USB-C) instead.I guess, but because of the design you can’t magnetically store this new pencil on the 9th gen iPad.
It's not a clean upgrade for that, either. It removes pressure sensitivity.
Seems more like an alternative to the Crayon.
Not too terribly different to the MacBook lineup as well….very bloated. Three 13 inch laptops, two of which are called MacBook Air but look different, and two that have the exact same SOC but have different names.Seriously. We now have 4 iPads of very similar physical size, and 3 Pencils.
iPad 10.2”
iPad 10.9”
iPad Air 10.9”
iPad Pro 11”
Apple Pencil (2nd gen)
Apple Pencil (USB-C)
Apple Pencil (1st gen)
I can see how they end up here but could they honestly not put more of an effort to simplify this stuff? I've been in the store witnessing someone wanting to buy an iPad and being confused by all the options. The store employee explaining the differences really didn't help the issue either.
Really feel like they should have found a way to make the 2nd gen Pencil work with the 10th gen iPad so that all new designs had the same pencil. And then eventually just retire the 9th gen iPad along with the older 1st gen Pencil.
So both USB-C and magnet charging?
Weird that they'd roll this out right now...a cheap"er" pencil that appeals to more people. They must expect a waive of buyers of Apple Pencils in the near future. Could they be making it useable on the iPhone soon via software?
I think "upgrade" is subjective. Some would argue that the loss of pressure sensitivity is a huge downgrade.Which Pencil 1 features is it missing?
I think it does work with all iPads. They should have discontinued the Apple Pencil (1st gen) and made Apple Pencil (USB-C) work with all iPads that support Apple Pencil.
It works with all iPads that have a USB-C port, but there’s no reason why older iPads couldn’t use a USB-C to Lightning cable for pairing.
I'm actually curious if it works, but apple hid it in the compatibility sheet so that people buy the $20 more oneLetting the Apple Pencil (USB-C) work with the iPad 9th generation via a USB-C to lightning cable instead would be better, no? Seeing that the iPad comes with the cable when you buy it.
I don't understand what's so different about this. The Lightning port on the 1st gen Pencil was hidden. It was hiddle by a cap just like this new USB-C Pencil hides the port with a cap.The hidden USB-C port is what they _should_ have done with the Lightning port on the first generation, very elegant solution if you can't offer magnetic charging for whatever reason.
If people want cheaper, they get less features. That's life. They REMOVED the wireless magnetic charging.
WTF?!
On the first gen the cap comes off completely and can then be lost.I don't understand what's so different about this. The Lightning port on the 1st gen Pencil was hidden. It was hiddle by a cap just like this new USB-C Pencil hides the port with a cap.
Pressure sensitivity.Which Pencil 1 features is it missing?
So what will you say when this one goes on sale regularly? What a worthless product . Just Buy the Apple Pencil 2 for $85 on sale regularly….
I see. Then it's not the design of the hidden port so much as it is an issue with the design of the cap or how it's integrated into the Pencil. Noted. On the first gen the cap comes off completely and can then be lost.
Still seems odd to release this pencil without any new iPads.
Makes you wonder if the plan was to release iPads along with it and something caused a delay in the shipments of the new/updated iPads.
Not exactly. It claims to work with any USB-C ipad. so Gen 1 and Gen 2 ipads of all models if that ANY USB-C ipad claim holds true............No. This is a replacement for the Gen 1 only and doesn't offer wireless charging.
The Gen 2 remains available for the Air and Pro.
