Sorry to bump this, but I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about the pending Greensboro store?

When this news first came out in November '07, it was touted as "opening early 2008!".

Then early 2008 came and the papers said "opening summer 2008!"

Now summer 2008 is here and last weekend when I was at Friendly, I didn't see any signs of an Apple store. Nadda. Zip. Zilch.

Of course Friendly/Shops @ Friendly are somewhat sprawling and I didn't comb every square inch of shop space for an Apple logo but since this store is thought of as A Big Deal I thought I would've seen *something*

I'm hoping I obviously missed it and that someone here will say "Duh you twit. It's there big as life and opening next week".....

ha, sadly i live right down the street ( walking distance) from the friendly center and there is no sign or anything about it. Though i have talked to them and they say they are still opening , when is the question. They said it could be a whole year. Its being put in the center of the New run of building to the left of the New BB&T Bank. ( across from MiMis Cafe.) The Friendly center says it IS happening, and so does the apple site. I was hoping it would be open by september, but that wont be happening.

so no, you are not a twit and you havent missed anything....

aaaarrgghhh!! Bummer!!!

Glad to know though that I didn't have a helluva blonde moment and miss the store completely. I concentrated my search near the BB&T building so at least I was in the right area.

I live only 20 minutes from Greensboro, as opposed to an hour to the Southpoint store, excited doesn't even begin to describe me :p

Thanks for the insight! Here's to hoping we see signs of life from the store *sometime* in '08.

Ground Breaking Yet...

I'm in Greensboro, but haven't been to Friendly Center in a few months. How's progress coming along on this store? I would have rather shopped here than driving all the way to Southpoint to get my iPhone 3G!

I was at Friendly last week and there has been no progress. The physical building is there (If I've been told correctly. It's between the BB&T building and MiMi's cafe) but it's still boarded up with false store fronts and plywood. The only progress is that Apple has the Friendly Store listed in its "job opportunities". At least that's something.

No signs of life or even a "Coming Soon!" at the actual store site.

Of course it's entirely possible that something has happened since then. I live in Elon (an hour away from Southpoint but only 25 minutes from Friendly) so I don't exactly drive past every day.

I thought they would be chomping at the bit to open soon. With all the schools and colleges/universities in the area, August would be a gold mine for them.

I agree about the August sales period. My guess is that there must have been some leasing negociation issues to cause any delay. It wouldn't make sense for apple to delay on its own.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out too and post if I see any further progress.

Please do! In the meanwhile, I'm thinking about contacting the News & Record to see if they can flush out what the holdup is.

I talked to the Friendly Center Offices, and they said that Apple is coming, they have claimed their location ( the building next to BB&T) BUT the date that they will start construction, they will not give. Friendly Center said that when they have information of when it will open, they will post "coming soon" signs

this wait is almost worse than the "new MBPs" wait

*whimper*

*lower lip tremble*

But

but

I want my Apple store noooooooooooooooooooowwwwww!!!

Thank for this info though! Good thing to know talks haven't fallen through or something equally devastating to Mac fandom.

I'm kind of glad, in an oddly perverse way, that the Greensboro store is taking its sweet time opening. It's helping me put off buying a new MB/MBP until later. At the rate they're going, I'll be able to wait out a couple of updates.

What I've heard...

Someone had told me the delay was caused by Apple diverting its construction efforts to South Carolina since they don't have any stores there yet. However, construction is now complete on the South Carolina store and has a grand opening this Saturday. My assumption is that they will now come back to Greensboro to install our store next. This is second hand information coming from a co-worker who said that is what he was told at the Raleigh store by an employee. Sounds believable to me, but we'll see it when we see it. :apple:

I drove by Friendly today and for the first time I saw that they were working in the building behind BB&T. I hope the rumored location is correct.

I can see that being the case but sheeesh, you would think Apple could spring for multiple constructions. I mean, c'mon, it's just South Carolina ;)

Damn skippy! I'm keeping my fingers crossed we'll see a "coming soon!" sign in the near future.

Where in SC? Is it the one in Charleston? On king street?

Was over that way again for lunch today. Rolled down the window and asked one of the workers what store was moving into the space. He said, "some computer store... an Apple store, I think." I asked when the work was supposed to be completed and he said that it was orignally supposed to be done by last month so he wasn't sure what the schedule was now.

Sweet! Sucks to know it should've been open by now but glad to know it's underway!

I've seriously thought about it, they're still accepting applications. My rational self says it's silly to drive 20 minutes for a retail job, but Irrational Self argues "but it'd be SO cool!!! Discount!!! Play with the new apple toys!!! c'mon!!!"

what is the discount for apple employees?

and how closely do they watch their stock.... i mean would they really notice a box or two missing out of the back?:D ( kidding...sorta):D:D

I know it's silly to start posting pictures of what amounts to a hollowed out husk of a building with nothing ID'ing this as The Apple Store, but I'm excited that *something* resembling progress is being made.

The Apple Store as of 7/27/08

Exciting, I know. "Gee Handlevandal, thanks! I never would've guessed THIS is what a construction site looks like" :D

lol! Oh, you mean Apple actually watches their stock? 'Cause I was thinking about just lifting a few (dozen) iPods and selling 'em out of the back of my car to help supplement was is sure to be a lousy retail paycheck. :D

I kid I kid....there's nothing funny about a felony.

Most of the time.

Re: Discount. When I talked to an Apple store employee a few years ago at the Southpoint store, he told me they get a 10% discount and a once/year 25% discount on a complete system. Of course that was about 2-3 years ago, so it's probably changed.

Ah what the hell. I went and applied for a position at the G'boro store. They've probably already hired everyone (I remember seeing an ad in the News & Record back in January) but it can't hurt :)

Really? Look again.

I am gonna break this to you guys as gently as possible: You were terribly wrong, it isn't an Apple Store, rather a Williams-Sonoma. Sorry, I tried to be gentle, really I did try, but I was pretty let down by the whole thing, too.

Sorry for the poor image quality. Taken on my 3Jesus :apple:

Close up for the doubters.

After reading posts on TUAW and here, I had my hopes up that Cupertinoliciousness would float down on the gilded wings of a minimalistic, Jobsian magnitude and vanquish the blight of slovenish heathens that lurk in the White House/Black Market across the parking lot. Surely, the Apple retail location is on the way, but I wouldn't jump the gun next time. Maybe wait until an :apple: logo pops up or they turn the lights on and open the doors. But hey! Williams-Sonoma at least has recipes for Apple Cranberry Galette. Those are pretty yummy. It is possible that the W-S and Apple will share a space together, but the only construction going on (that I saw) was on the Williams-Sonoma side.

ok well thanks. however There IS going to be an Apple store in this 'strip' of stores. They may have started on the william sonoma, but that doesnt mean that they are not working on the apple store too. I personally talked to the Friendly center and they said that, that is the strip of stores where it will be located.
