wtf why arent they opening any in Canada. do they think were poor or that we live in igloos or somethin:mad: . wat a crock. Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver would do HUGE business. im in vancouver and I can just imagine a store on Robson st. would be ideal.

Toronto is already planned , and I myself think Vancouver and Montreal will be next.

No chance for little Trois-Rivieres though, stuck between Montreal and Quebec City.

And no real reseller either (even resellers don't show any Apple logo nor have any Apple gear in stock, except iPods of course).

AppleInsider has a story on the latest on Apple's mid-town Fifth Avenue store plans.

Apple to build elegant retail store in Manhattan's Midtown

By Prince Mclean
Published: 12:00 PM EST

Sometime this year Apple Computer is expected to begin renovation and construction efforts on its second New York City-based retail store, set to touch down in central Manhattan.

After months of searching for a feasible location in pricey Midtown, the company has reportedly settled on a lease for a massive retail space in the lower-level concourse of the General Motors Building at 767 Fifth Avenue, between 58th and 59th Street.

The GM building, which rests atop an entire city block directly across the street from the Plaza Hotel, is also home to an FAO Schwarz toy store, which moved in fourteen years ago. The building is also just a few strides from the southern tip of Central Park.

Although it's very early in the development stages, sources say Apple will turn the 21,000-square-foot space into a retail store that will 'rival anything seen so far' from the company's retail division.

Specifics are lacking, but one source claims Apple will give the exterior of the store a look similar to the glass Pyramid found in the Louvre's cour Napoléon, only in cube form.

The cost of the venture is expected to be steep. Apple's existing New York-based flagship store, located in Manhattan's SoHo district, reportedly costs the company just over $2 million in rent each year, on top of an initial $5 million in renovation costs.

Insiders believe the GM retail location fetched over $3 million a year.

Still no news on the Braintree or Century City stores, so it looks like my prediction of the last part of January will go by the wayside. However, Apple didn't post the Nagoya store news until a few hours to opening (in english anyway) so maybe there is still hope.

Thank you for the update Sayhey. They must be having some construction problems, it could be related to the Blizzard of '05. Hopefully they will open in February.

Buyer Beware!

In the absence of an Apple store w/in striking distance of Salt Lake City, Apple devotees should avoid a retail outlet called Alden Media. To describe the staff there as unhelpful is to redefine the concept of understatement.

That is quite a negative review for your first post, so forewarned is forearmed. Welcome to MacRumors, hope that you will be a frequent visitor.

Five more new stores for Apple

On Apple's local job listing page the company has now started listing job openings for five new stores. The new stores posted are ones in Penn Square, Oklahoma City; Garden State Plaza, Paramus, New Jersey; Northbrook Mall, Northbrook, Illinois; Florida Mall, Orlando, Florida; and Pentagon City, Arlington, Virginia. The Oklahoma City store is the first in that state. Both the Orlando and Arlington stores will be the second in their respective cities. There is no indication yet if any of these stores will be of the mini-store variety, but that seems likely in some of their cases, particularly for Orlando and Arlington. If Apple's training schedule hold to its past practice, we can expect openings by July at the latest.

Credit should go to infoAppleStore for its projection of the Penn Square location last year. Gary may have gotten the timing wrong, but he hit the target dead on concerning the location. Let's hope his projection of an opening in Tulsa is correct as well.

BTW, these postings already exceed the number of openings forecast in Peter Oppenheimer's end of quarter projections. His projections of 125 stores by years end with 10 international stores would seem to be a purposeful understatement of Apple's openings this year, particularly since we know of hiring of positions for enough stores to go beyond his figures - and this only in February! Think Secret's forecast of 40 new stores by year's end looks much more realistic.

Here is the new updated list of stores that have job listings posted on Apple's website and will open this year.

  1. South Shore Plaza - Braintree, Massachusetts
  2. Century City - Los Angeles, California
  3. Lincoln Road - Miami Beach, Florida
  4. St. John's Town Center - Jacksonville, Florida
  5. Pioneer Place - Portland, Oregon
  6. The Gardens at Palm Beach - Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
  7. La Cantera - San Antonio, Texas
  8. Green Hills - Nashville, Tennessee
  9. Woodland - Grand Rapids, Michigan
  10. The Woodlands - Houston, Texas
  11. Gateway Mall - Salt Lake City, Utah
  12. Yorkdale - Toronto, Canada
  13. Bluewater - Kent, England
  14. Bullring - Birmingham, England
  15. Crabtree Valley - Raleigh, North Carolina
  16. Bridgeport Village - Tualatin, Oregon
  17. Manhattan Village - Manhattan Beach, California
  18. Penn Square - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  19. Pentagon City - Arlington, Virginia
  20. Garden State Plaza - Paramus, New Jersey
  21. Northbrook Court - Northbrook, Illinois
  22. Florida Mall - Orlando, Florida

In addition, Oppenheimer's statement has Apple opening three, as yet undisclosed, international locations as well. This would put the number of stores open by years end at 127 (102 open + 22 list above + 3 undisclosed, but projected international locations.) As I said in the previous post, this already exceeds the 125 locations acknowledged.

Thank you Sayhey for your tireless effort to keep us informed on Apple Store opening. Very interesting list. Hopefully the South Shore, MA will open by the time of the Tiger release.

Still no European stores outside the UK!

yay the south shore plaza one is opening..... hopefully i will still be up here when it opens... Now if only they were to add a cheese cake factory, i will be one happy, apple/cheesecake factory nerd

In reverse order:

daveway, yes Apple is still living under a rock. No reason I can tell, other than the search for the "perfect" location, that there isn't a store in New Orleans.

puckhead, do you know something about an impending date for South Shore? I keep looking at local papers, mall sites, biz journals, etc. and I can't find out a hint of why Apple is taking so long in the opening of this store and Century City. Both are coming up on six months since the first job listings, and going beyond that mark would set a record for time between job posting and opening for a "normal" size store.

solaris, Apple has acknowledged that there will be ten international stores by the end of the year. Given the impending opening of Toronto, Birmingham, and Kent, that leaves at least three as yet unknown international locations. I think you're right in being skeptical that there will be any European openings this year outside of the UK. I betting on one of those three to be the much rumored Manchester store and at least one more Japanese store. So unless Apple is going to go over its mark of 10 by year's end it is unlikely that we will see another European country get a store this year. But remember, Apple has already gone over their projected US numbers, so it would not be out of the question to see some surprises late in the year. If and when it happens, Paris has to be considered the front runner.

wdlove, no thanks necessary, I just wish I had more happy information to report about the South Shore store. Can anybody close by go and ask what is the delay?

btw, here's the updated list of US metro areas (ranked by population and not counting San Juan, Puerto Rico) without an Apple store or one planned. This is not a list on which you want to make it to number one.

  1. Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana
  3. Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  4. Providence, Rhode Island
  5. Rochester, New York
  6. Louisville, Kentucky
  7. Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
  8. Dayton, Ohio
  9. Fresno, California
  10. Birmingham, Alabama
  11. Tulsa, Oklahoma
  12. Omaha, Nebraska
  13. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  14. Knoxville, Tennessee
  15. El Paso, Texas
  16. Bakersfield, California
  17. Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
  18. Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
  19. Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
  20. Toledo, Ohio

There are already rumors of stores in Virginia Beach, Providence, Dayton, Fresno, and Tulsa. I would expect some of these cities to have a store by year's end.

Why not in Connecticut?

Why do they leave out two of the higest population and income areas in the US.

New Haven & Fairfield Counties in CT?

You can live in the richest county in the country but if there aren't many registered Apple customers you won't get much attention from them. At least you've already got two stores, and CT isn't exactly big, so they can't be that far away from you. ;)

New Haven - Milford metro area is part of the consolidated New York metro area. That is why it is not on my list as not having a store. There are currently 11 New York area stores and many more planned. Sooner or later one of the many New York stores will be built in the New Haven area.

wdlove,

I sent a note over to Gary at infoAppleStore asking about the delay at South Shore and this is what he has posted.

The mystery surrounding the South Shore Plaza (Mass.) store delay has been solved: Apple was waiting for the adjacent Disney Store to close so it could incorporate that space into its future store. Apple interviewed prospective employees last summer, but construction never cranked up. The Disney Store closed last week, and now plywood covers both spaces before construction begins.

I just remembered this old story, dated November 18th of last year, from the BBC website. The last sentence is very interesting.

Apple plans to open stores at the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent and Bullring complex in Birmingham in the next six months. Mr Johnson said there were plans to open stores in continental Europe in 2005.

Apple can't seem to keep their story straight, so perhaps we will see that non-UK European store this year.

what the hell, the South Shore store wont open till spring prolly, this sucks. And I am too lazy to drive to any of the other MA stores since I have a long commute to school.

Why in the world will Apple not open a Apple Store in San Antonio, TX or Austin, TX. It is not easy to drive all the way from SA to Houston or Dallas.

There is a store in Austin... Barton Creek mall. It is about 6 miles from Michael Dell's house. Wonder if he has made the drive to check it out?

Thank you Sahey, your thoughtfulness if greatly appreciated. This is good news, this means that the store should be one on the larger stores in the area. Hope that construction can be completed in time for an opening prior to the release of Tiger.

Salt Lake City

I just felt like posting an update on the Salt Lake store. Basically there's nothing to update. ;-) www.ifoapplestore.com said it was going to open in new construction on the north end of the mall, and that it would open in June. Well, there's absolutely no construction going on, which makes me think it's either not going to open in June, or else it will open in an existing space in the mall. There's a space about the size of a medium-sized Apple Store on the second floor that's been vacant for a few months now, but peering through the window you can see that no work is going on inside.

There's a couple of smaller spaces a little further south that are covered up with white plywood where a new store is being built... maybe a mini Apple Store?

How long does it take to set up an Apple Store?

Also FYI, Alden Media has changed its name to Mac Something. Their repair guy sucks. I paid him $120 for him to tell me that my Mac was not fixable and to buy a new one. Then I bought TechTool Pro from the same store (on a recommendation from the sales guy) and TechTool said my RAM was bad. Replaced the RAM and everything has been hunky-dory ever since. So, in my experience, the sales dudes are okay, but don't take your Mac there for repairs. They charge you $60 an hour, even if they don't do anything.

That's too bad. I had really hoped constuction of the new area would have started already. Unless Apple goes in elswhere, I seriously doubt they will be opening this summer.

:(

The construction can go relatively fast (in the order of a month or two) unless we are talking about a stand alone store or a high-profile store (not the case in SLC.) The hiring and training is what takes most of the time. I wouldn't be worried about a June or July opening date just yet for Salt Lake City.

btw, here is the updated list of upcoming stores verified by job listings.
