No problem. From what little I know about Chicago, I think the southern suburbs are generally not as affluent as the northern and western ones. Thats might explain why there aren't any Apple stores in the south suburbs yet.

I could deffinately see a high profile store going up in Boston, Washington, or Philadelphia since none of these cities has a store in their city limits yet. And I agree with you about the Providence store. Any day now. ;)

I've always understood Chicago's southside to be the less affluent area of the city, but I don't have a clue about the suburbs to the south. With the other four metro areas, Apple has six new stores planned, so I'm confident on their commitment to the areas, but still waiting on the high-profile stores. It maybe that the monies for such projects are tied up in New York (midtown and 34th street,) Rome (first continental store,) and Paris (said to be in the offing in 2007) upcoming stores. I know we keep saying Providence will be coming soon, but it is a matter now of when, not if. I guess that is some help in trying to be patient.

ethelred, Apple currently has five stores in the UK (Regent Street, Birmingham, Sheffield, Kent, and Manchester) and a new London location, Brent Cross, opening in early 2006 (rumored to open on the 28th of January.) Sorry, can't help on Panther.

To upgrade to Tiger you'll need a copy of 10.4. And you need to post that sort of request in the right forum.

Apple finishes the year with 135 stores or 34 new stores in 2005. More opened than in any previous year, but less than what looked likely at mid-year. Looking forward, Apple has stated that they will have 40 new stores by the end of fiscal year 2006 (Sept. 30, 2006.) That, of course, includes the 11 stores already opened since the close of the last fiscal year. So we are looking at a forecast of 24 to 29 new stores between now and the end of September. Here's what has opened and what we know is in the works.

Fiscal 2006 stores.
  1. Staten Island Mall - Staten Island, New York - opened 10/15
  2. The Oaks - Thousand Oaks, California - opened 10/29
  3. Burlington Mall - Burlington, Massachusetts - opened 11/05
  4. Brea Mall - Brea, California - opened 11/12
  5. Gateway Mall - Salt Lake City, Utah - opened 11/19
  6. Beverly Center - Los Angeles, California - opened 11/19
  7. Fashion Square - Sherman Oaks, California - opened 11/19
  8. Trafford Centre - Manchester, England - opened 11/19
  9. Fukuoka Tenjin - Fukuoka, Japan - opened 12/03
  10. Sendai Ichibancho - Sendai, Japan - opened 12/10
  11. Meadowhall Centre - Sheffield, England - opened 12/10
  12. Brent Cross - London, England - opened 1/28
  13. Lincoln Road - Miami Beach, Florida
  14. Crabtree Valley - Raleigh, North Carolina
  15. Garden State Plaza - Paramus, New Jersey
  16. Derby Street - Hingham, Massachusetts
  17. Midtown - New York City, New York
  18. Northpark Center - Dallas, Texas
  19. Irvine Spectrum Center - Irvine, California
  20. Southlake Center - Southlake, Texas
  21. Suburban Square - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
  22. Summit Sierra - Reno, Nevada (grand opening of mall on March 15, 2006)
  23. Freehold Raceway - Freehold, New Jersey
  24. The Pier - Atlantic City, New Jersey
  25. Eaton Centre - Toronto, Canada
  26. Rome, Italy
  27. Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, Georgia
  28. Flatiron Crossing - Broomfield, Colorado
  29. Simi Valley Town Center - Simi Valley, California
  30. Ridgedale Mall - Minneapolis, Minnesota
  31. The Mall in Columbia - Columbia, Maryland
  32. Providence Place Mall - Providence, Rhode Island
  33. Memorial City Mall - Houston, Texas
  34. Fair Oaks Mall - Fairfax, Virginia
  35. Smith Haven Mall - Lake Grove, New York
  36. Stamford Town Center - Stamford, Connecticut
  37. MacArthur Center - Norfolk, Virginia
  38. Flatiron - New York City, New York - opening is almost certainly canceled due to design disputes, but it is still listed as a location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page as of 12/31/05.

The above, if all completed by September, would leave us 3 stores short of Apple's forecast. I'll keep posting new locations as they come up.

I think Providence, RI is the perfect location for an Apple store. Why does stupid California get so many?! ARGH. :(

I AGREE!!! I saw Robert Johnson (apple vp of retail) speak at a design conference in providence almost 2 years ago. Someone asked him when providence would have a store. He seemed positive, but not committal.
I am waiting....

I'm not sure I understand your post. Did you read my post immediately before yours? Apple has finally confirmed through its own listing of retail locations that a new store is planned for Providence Place Mall. This means, if all goes as normal, that there will be a store opened in Providence within 6 to 9 months. While I don't recommend holding your breath for that period of time, the store is coming.

edit: btw, with Providence Place now confirmed, here is the revised list of the top twenty US metro areas without an Apple store or one planned.

  1. Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana
  3. Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  4. Louisville, Kentucky
  5. Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
  6. Dayton, Ohio
  7. Fresno, California
  8. Birmingham, Alabama
  9. Tulsa, Oklahoma
  10. Omaha, Nebraska
  11. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  12. Knoxville, Tennessee
  13. El Paso, Texas
  14. Bakersfield, California
  15. Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
  16. Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
  17. Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
  18. Toledo, Ohio
  19. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  20. Youngstown/Warren, Ohio

Ohio gains the dubious honor, along with Pennsylvania, as the states having the most metro areas without a store in the top twenty.

Latergator, this one's for you. After what must seem forever, Apple has listed on its "Search Jobs" webpage a new location for an upcoming store in the Providence Place mall in Providence, Rhode Island. This long rumored site is the first in the state.

Thank you, Sayhey! I knew it was coming around the corner (actaully, I didn't but I'll say so anyway ;)). It seems like it has been forever since they announced they wanted to build one here. I'll try to go there soon and confirm the actaul location if Apple puts a sign up. Thanks again!

At least you can order from AppleStore Online.

I take this to mean you can't? Does the AppleStore Online only work in the US? That's news to me, and, if true, truly sucks. My sympathies, mpw.

AppleStore Online has branches in most European countries as far as I'm aware and I've always used the UK store but they decided they'll no longer supply Jersey (it's thought to be because they've done a deal with TNT the delivery company who don't have a local depot).

As a result an iBook that would've cost me £719 in November will now cost me £899 and BTO will cost even more with much longer delivery times.

It's funny that I've never heard of this problem, and just as you make me aware of it I find this story via macsurfer.com (a great resource, btw.) I hope this means relief is coming your way soon. Good luck.

Apple eyes up islands as site for online store

by Phil Henderson

APPLE may open a Channel Islands-based Internet store.

Apple’s range of hardware includes such items as iPod portable music players and iMac computers. (Picture by Daniel Guerin, 0272881)
The computer giant has suspended online sales to the islands while it investigates doing so.
Acting PR manager Gia Goodman recently stated the company’s position on the matter.
‘In order to provide an optimum service quality to our customers, we are evaluating the need for a Channel Islands Apple online store. In the meantime, customers continue to be able to purchase Apple products from our network of local resellers.’
She said the company was aware of the potential tax advantages, but was unable to comment further or reveal in which island it might be based.
Some customers recently found difficulty purchasing its products on the Internet and were told it would not supply to Guernsey except through its resellers.
One customer contacted the Guernsey Press because to get a product here they had to order it via a UK address, pay VAT and have it forwarded to the island.
States departments in both Guernsey and Jersey said they were unaware of any move by Apple to set up an online store.
‘The department is not working with Apple and is not aware that it is taking this kind of approach,’ said Commerce and Employment director of resources Stuart Le Maitre.
Jersey Regulations and Undertakings director Wayne Gallichan said the only thing he knew was from in an article in the local paper.
Mr Gallichan said that if the company wanted to set up a business in Jersey, it would have to apply for a licence under its Regulation of Undertaking and Development Law.
Apple’s potential move comes after music giant HMV recently opened a postal order warehouse in the former Guernsey Post Office HQ, investing more than £1m. in the building and recruiting more than 30 local staff. Up to 100,000 CDs per week are understood to pass through the warehouse and later this year the company aims to open a major retail outlet in the island.

edit: I just noticed that this is this thread's "Norman invasion" post, so it's fitting it's about Apple "invading" the English channel. ;)

job listings for Providence Place

monster.com has new listings for individual jobs in the upcoming Providence Place store. It's just another step in the process of making this store a reality. It means that an opening is more likely within the next 6 - 9 months.

All the Apple stores in Georgia are in the north part. :(
How about some love for the southern end? Columbus? Macon? Savannah?

Apple will never open a store in the islands IMO, there just isn't the market for a OnlineStore, let alone bricks and mortar. The fact the the journalist went out seeking confirmation from the local business offices just shows how little he understands business in general.

Just last night I heard a rumor that the only decent (but over-priced) Apple reseller is closing after just 18months, I hope it isn't true.

I didn't mean to imply a brick and mortar store is likely in your location; I was only referring to the possibility of on-line access to Apple. I would think Apple would want universal access via the internet to their products. How much could it cost them to make this available to you folks? Not a lot.

Apple has now posted a new Houston, Texas location on their "Search Jobs" webpage. This, the third store in the Houston area, is to be located in the Memorial City Mall. This also will be the third Texas store scheduled to open this year.

any guesses as to when it'll open? How long does it take between the posting of jobs and the opening usually take?

..I have a grand opening to attend! :)

katie, it usually takes from the time of posting individual job listings for the store anywhere from 6 to 9 months before the store opens. The fastest Apple has had a turn around from listings to opening is 3 months, but that is very uncommon. My guess is you're looking at a late summer opening, either August or September, but I'll be sure to post any further information I can find as it becomes available.

Camping out there today might be a little premature. ;)

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (the original article from Saturday is pay per view) Apple plans to open stores in Germany within the next 6-12 months. finanzen.net quotes FAZ by saying that the following cities are candidates for stores, München, Berlin, Hamburg, Köln and Frankfurt. Gravis is the leading Apple reseller in Germany and has stores in all the above cities.
