I've been wondering the same about Birmingham, AL. Although a recent map on Gary's site would suggest that Alabama isn't a good site for a store, Birmingham would be a notable exception, I think.

I'd love to know the story behind the original store #5, which was supposed to have been in Birmingham.

I haven't posted this list in a while, so perhaps it will help in looking for answers to the last few posts. Here is the list of the largest US metro areas and consolidated metro areas (according to the 2000 census and not counting Puerto Rico) without an Apple Store or one planned.
  1. Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana
  3. Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  4. Providence, Rhode Island
  5. Louisville, Kentucky
  6. Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
  7. Dayton, Ohio
  8. Fresno, California
  9. Birmingham, Alabama
  10. Tulsa, Oklahoma
  11. Omaha, Nebraska
  12. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  13. Knoxville, Tennessee
  14. El Paso, Texas
  15. Bakersfield, California
  16. Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
  17. Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
  18. Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
  19. Toledo, Ohio
  20. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Notice that Birmingham, Alabama; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska are numbers 9, 10, & 11 on this list. Is it likely that one or more of them will get a store soon? I'd say yes. Are there other factors than population size that goes into Apple's decisions on store location? Undoubtedly, but here is a good place to start. It is worth noting that there are only two locations (Des Moines and Reno) with smaller populations than Baton Rouge that have a store or, in the case of Reno, one planned.

Yeah, after checking out the Des Moines store, it made me wonder even more why we don't have one here in Omaha. We have way more people, we have a couple of Universities that attract students, and we have two additional cities in very close proximity that could also be potential customers (Council Bluffs and Lincoln).

Three Stores to open Nov. 19th

Apple has confirmed and expanded rumors of three new store openings next weekend, Nov. 19th. The openings are to be the much discussed Salt Lake City store in The Gateway Mall (the first in Utah,) and two new southern California locations - Sherman Oaks and The Beverly Center in the Los Angeles metro area.

It appears that Apple is gearing up to meet the holiday rush with these three openings; the question becomes can we expect more triple headers before the season is over?

edit: I should note that not only does this represent Utah's first store (the 31st state to have a store,) but it also marks California's 30th store with only the Irvine Spectrum store still known to be in the works. This is the 15th LA metro area store and the third in LA proper. Don't worry Los Angelenos I don't think Apple is stopping soon.

edit #2: In a curious development Apple has changed the date of the Beverly Center and Sherman Oaks store openings to "Coming Soon" from early today when both stores were listed as opening on Nov. 19th along with the Gateway Mall in Salt Lake City. Construction delays?

Try this link and I think you can find the place.

Well if we're going by population, Texas is second only to California and I think it only has like three Apple Stores, two near (but not actually in) Dallas and one in Houston. I'm from San Antonio, and I think an Apple store there would do pretty well, but I can understand why there wouldn't be one, as San Antonians just don't seem to be Mac folks (makes me sad). But Apple has offices in Austin for crying out loud, it seems logical to me to have at least one there. Of course that assertion has nothing to do with the fact that I'd be less than an hour from it if there was one :D

I think there is an Apple store in Austin, in the Barton Creek mall (sorry, can't remember the name off the top, but it's the mall on the southwest area of Austin, TX). Saw it there a few months ago.

Apple has updated their list yet again and now shows all three stores opening this saturday. Also, ifoapplestore.com now reports that the Trafford Centre UK store will also open and says that they had a soft opening today (he has some picts on the site). Four store openings this weekend!!!

Confirmation on Nov. 19th opening of Manchester store

Apple has finally posted confirmation of the opening of the new store in the Trafford Centre in Manchester, England. This is the UK's fourth store with two more known to be in the works.

Well I just got back from the Trafford Centre store opening. AMAZING DAY!

It was a lot of fun. My girlfriend and I got there at about 8.50am, thinking that the Apple Store frenzy that so often adorns the openings in the states wouldnt be the same in the UK. How wrong I was. By the time we got there the queue looped a third of the Trafford Centre. I was scared I might not get my free Apple t Shirt for being one of the first 1,000 in the store. luckily I got the t shirt. Makes a nice souvenir.

I have to say its a very immaculately designed store. There is a huge Mac presence in there which was excellent to see. Lots of mere iPod users were having fun on Photobooth and with Front Row. I came away with an Airport Express and .Mac. Got a little student discount so was cool. AirTunes rocks.

Heres some pics of the day. Mind the quality, as it was done on a camera phone.

This is the (huge) queue that we was in for the store opening. Bear in mind we were already queueing 30 minutes after the store opened at this point. The queue literally went about a third of the way of the Trafford Centre. You cant even see the store from this far back.

30" Apple Cinema Display. I honestly nearly had a heartattack when I seen the size of this thing. As my girlfriend did when she saw the price, lol

iMac section. Must have been about 10 iMacs scattered around the store too.

I was recently in Budapest and Sarajevo and there were Apple Centers in both cities. The displays and the signage were identical so I can't help but think that they were owned by the same company. The store in Budapest was about the size as the Apple Store in Santa Rosa and had about 10 macs on display while the one in Sarajevo was about half the size and only had 4 on display. I didn't speak to any of the staff as both places were busy while I was there.

Half the laptops I saw during my trip were a mix of iBooks and PBs. I was sort of surprised but it must mean that Apple is doing rather well in eastern and central Europe.
