I think release really depends on the state of Siri. ...

Despite my post above trying to examine various sides of the argument I tend to agree with you still that being able to do an updated Siri demo that is at least somewhat credible and that Apple is confident is imminently releasable (no more WWDC24 missteps) is probably a gating factor for the next HomePod and maybe also the next Apple TV announcement as well.

On my alternate theory about ATV & HPM maybe being today's (Tuesday's) announcements based on the fact that tomorrow (Wednesday) might be 100% MacBook focussed I'm now wondering if there might not be any announcements tomorrow in which case presumably we'll see all the new MacBook stuff announced today and that might well squeeze out (preclude) any ATV announcement this week.

I'm thinking maybe no press releases tomorrow because the timings of the Experience events are New York, London and Shanghai at 9 a.m. EST / 2 p.m. GMT / 6 a.m. PST. I assume Apple releases its press releases from Cupertino and if the Experience events are kicking off at 6 a.m. PST time I'm not sure that gives APple a window on Wednesday morning to do any product announcement releases that day so maybe the timing for this week is...

Monday - iPhone and iPad announcements already seen.
Tuesday - All the MacBook stuff, the rest of the M5s and the new A-Series one and maybe Studio displays.
Wednesday - No more announcements, that day dedicated to the experience events to give press etc hands-on looks at what was announced over the previous 2 days.

Oh well. Basically I have no idea but if I had to place a bet I think I'd be putting my money on no updated ATV (or updated HPM) this week.

A19 is completely unnecessary, the current Apple TV is technically already overkill with its A15. tvOS 26 still runs on the A8 chip (2014).
is that true? I mean it doesnt have a lot of audio codecs and i think missing some video ones also. Isnt most of that SOC stuff? just asking.

If only Apple would realize no one who wants to buy a new ATV or HP/M even gives a damn about Siri or AI.

I'm fairly sure there's no new Apple TV coming in the near future. The AI just isn't ready and they're not looking to repeat what happened with the iPhone 16 where they launch/advertise something before it's complete.

I would have loved to see more supported audio formats. Like Bitstream. I know the AppleTV likes 5.1 or atmos but i have a 7.2 (Not Atmos) set up id like to kick the tires on. now that i have 2 out of 3 supporting matter im pretty content.

The AppleTV could be a contender in the console market if it wanted to be. it wont be the likes of PS5 or Stream but it could carve out a decent nitch. Look at nintendo. They compete directly with Sony and Xbox but arent on the same levels. They are enough for others to keep an eye on, I see you WII and Switch.

The only way is if they teamed up with a cloud game streaming provider, or hosted one themselves. Or it was a very low end Steambox.

Do actual gamers want that? Not really eh?

The current gen Apple TV remote still has a Lightning port and no USB C so I think it’s certainly due for an Upgrade and doesn’t sit in line with the rest of Apple’s product line up which all have USB C. With that being said, i need an Apple TV for another room in the house and have been holding off on buying one so if they don’t release a new one tomorrow I’ll just get the latest 4K HDR one (current gen)

Maybe right, maybe wrong only time will tell. Hardcore gamers probably not. I did say carve out a niche. I never thought YouTube would take off, but my sons love it. It’s not the actual movies and TV Shows they want to consume; it’s creator content. No one thought the iPhone was a comp, and Blackberry said business people didn’t want it; it was a joke. Look where we are now.

As I’m only interested in picture and sound quality, I can’t see the need to wait for the Apple Intelligence gimmick. As an avid film and TV buff I don’t need suggestions on what to watch. The forthcoming version is complete overkill for most users.

I understand and agree MOSTLY ! As a fellow TV and OLD movie buff that still watches like we did for decades . I am hoping that Apple uses AI to FINALLY unlock the potential of the box PLUS a Mac to help with me viewing methods. I am a constant channel an content SURFER . I seldom watch ANYTHING for more than an hour and will constantly surf and look for stuff while watching . This is a typical OLD Fart habit. Unfortunately, thanks to Apple's belief in silos between systems the Mac is useless for operating the box. In MY world ,WHILE WATCHING a show, I could be on my Mac looking at potential stuff to flick to during ads or boring stuff. Kinda like halftime or on elf the endless time out breaks during a football game. The horrible lag and load on ALL of the boxes/sticks experienced while you hunt , click, load the stream and select the show is maddening for some one used to the old fashioned world of cable TV. MAYBE Apple will finally free up the Mac and perhaps the HomePod thing to use the Mac as a central command where you can find stuff , preview it and IMMEDIATELY send it via the box to the big screen ! Or during massive news days , like we are having now, have 3-4 news streams working on the Mac and , upon seeing something interesting , ONE CLICK switch big screen to the channel ! Hopefully today Apple starts to tear down their sacred silos and frees up the Apple box .

you know you can add an ATV as a secondary screen to your mac right?

Use AirPlay to turn a TV or another Mac into a wireless second screen by
clicking the Control Center > Screen Mirroring icon, selecting the target display, and choosing "Use As Separate Display" to extend your desktop. Ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and Bluetooth is enabled.

I don't think codecs (and the lack thereof) are hardware related, but rather license (cost) related.
I don't think Apple has a problem paying for licenses - they supported h264 and HEVC very early, despite the relatively high license & royalty fees, whilst not supporting VP9 or AV1 for ages, which had a low licensing fee and no royalty fees. Similarly, the lossy DTS patents have now long expired (which is why Sonos has supported lossy DTS for a few years), but no sign of official Apple TV support.

On the steaming front, in the UK the BBC streaming service, iPlayer, offers UHD/HLG content to most 4k TV built in apps, but not to Apple TV, because the BBC uses the open/royalty-free MPEG Dash format, but Apple only supports the more expensive HLS format.

3 days done and no new apple tv hardware. 😞
The Apple TV 4K 4th gen is now pretty much at the mercy of the dev teams trying to get the new Siri working reliably enough for live demos (as no one will trust curated/video demos after the iOS18 debacle).
