I don't really understand the reason behind needing a new model. The Apple TV is not an iPhone, the last 3 models are very similar products with lengthy software support cycles, even longer than the Mac which costs a lot more. Plus they've only released 3 models since 2017. Unless you want AI you can likely get 90% of the same experience a new model would provide by just using the existing model.

welcome to the thread

Will keep waiting. Need two units. We have been waiting a long time. My 4k box is the one previous to the current version.
The 2nd gen model should easily see you through the wait. Apart from HDR10+ support I don't think the current model offers anything meaningful over the 2nd gen model, any in many ways the 2nd gen is better: it has a fan, so it actually performs better than the 3rd gen model on sustained performance and all models act as Thread border routers whereas only the 128 GB gen 3 model has this feature.

Just buy the current model people-you’ll be absolutely fine and get many more years worth of use out of it.
Or pick up a second hand 2nd or 3rd gen box from eBay or similar for around $/£80-90. When the new one launches you can either resell for minimal loss or stick with what you've got if the new one turns out to be a disappointment.

I am hoping for one with more storage, and either active cooling or at least one that doesn’t thermal throttle like the ATV4K3 does.

I'm guessing you mean for games? I have the 128GB model and it's more than enough for my apps. Haven't experienced any slowdown but I just use it to watch things.

well, guess what guys? I’m buying a “2022” Apple TV this weekend lol (current latest gen) from the Apple Store. Would have been great to get a new ATV announced today but oh well

Surely the main hope we have with a new Apple TV is that they finally include a decent remote.
What's your complaint with the remote? I think it's near perfect, albeit I keep the touch pad turned off in settings. The only minor complaint I have is I wish the "back" and "home" buttons were flush so I don't accidentally lean on the remote and either turn on the TV when it's off or exit out of a video/app while I'm watching something--but those only happen very occasionally. Not turning on the TV could also be fixed in software by setting it so only the power button can turn on the TV. I suppose there could also be a third party solution to my complaint that maybe has some kind of slide cover over the buttons when not in use.

Oh also a little speaker to play a noise to find the remote.

a keyboard on the back might be cool yet never happen

Hmm a keyboard would probably be useful for some (maybe a slide out), but not sure if I'd find it worth it personally. I find Siri pretty good for search, and for the occasional login I find it easier to authenticate on my phone. Maybe they could add touch ID to the remote for logging in.

It would be good if the touch pad were able to scroll much faster with a fast swipe (similar to the MX Mice scroll wheels from Logitech). Speaker/Find My/UWB chip would be good additions - although having said that, I haven't ever lost an Apple remote.
