I honestly like the Siri remote. I like how sleek and minimalist it is. If they added a U1 chip for find my, mute by holding volume down for x amount of seconds and maybe backlit/glowing buttons it would be perfect. The new remote feels like we are just going backwards with more buttons.

The new remote looks like an improvement, but what's exciting about the new Apple TV box itself over the 4K they released three years ago? It's a little faster for games? Roku's new device costs 1/4 of this and has a nicer interface (I know UI is subjective, but I have both an Apple TV 4K and a Roku - almost always use the Roku now except for Fitness+, as the $45 Roku is SO MUCH FASTER - so maybe this new ATV will close that gap a little, albeit still for 4x the price...).

People who are going to replace their current Siri remote with the new one—what are you going to do with your old one?

I'm going to sell it with the old Apple TV 4k.

I'm NOT buying a new remote for that much and only getting that as a benefit, I'd buy a whole new unit, benefit from the remote and speed (and updates?), and make up some of the difference by selling the other unit.

Breaking it down, assuming I get $80 for the old unit, I'd get the new remote for $60 and the new unit's updates for another $60 (or $80 if I don't sell the old one as much).

If you love the ATV 4k enough to spend $60 on a new remote, get the new unit too!!!

Then you’re not whom I was addressing! Lol

I see your point but in my situation I think just buying the remote makes more sense. I really have zero desire to upgrade my Apple TV to the new one even if it’s a net cost of only $50 or whatever more, as my current one is fine and none of the new hardware features of the unit appeal to me. Also I generally avoid the hassle of selling things. I prefer to give my old stuff away to family/friends when I upgrade. And I have two Apple TVs, 4K for living room and HD for bedroom, so the plan is to replace one remote now, then eventually buy an updated ATV unit later and give away the old ATV HD with its terrible remote.

I guess put 'em on ebay for dirt cheap and try to get basically anything back.

Like you, I'm not interested in new ATV4k's as mine do everything and more than I need.

OK, I'm showing my age here, but...

The new remote is a first-gen iPod!
Thank You! That was my first response also, lol. I read through the comments just to see if I was alone. I can't believe I made it to page 4 before encountering it.

I know this is a little ahead of time since orders start on April 30. When I get the new Siri remote how do I pair it with my old Apple TV 4K? I am wondering what settings I go to in Apple TV 4k to switch from the black old Siri remote to the new Siri Remote 2021?

New Siri Remote 2021 Turn on/off Projector and AVR
Does anyone know how the IR setup for the new Siri Remote will work for the On/Off button for those that cannot use HDMI CEC?
For example my Sony Projector needs IR Off twice in a row to turn off, and the AVR need IR off once. So will the new Siri Remote allow 3 IR commands for Off and 2 IR commands for On to be sent when the on/off button is pressed?

Would it be able to control TV functions other than on/off and mute? Can't find it on the website. Might be a nice replacement remote just for the TV.
How do I get my new Siri remote to control the Volume of my TV, Mute my TV and Control my TV power
When you connect your Apple TV to a compatible TV that has HDMI CEC enabled, Apple TV should automatically detect via HDMI CEC which TV brand it is and then automatically program the new Siri remote to be able to control the Volume of your TV, Mute your TV and control your TV's power, and set your TV HDMI input to the one Apple TV is connected to. Most modern TVs support Power control via HDMI CEC and will switch HDMI input to the HDMI input/port Apple TV is connected to automatically via HDMI CEC. Very few TVs support volume control or mute via HDMI CEC and the new Siri remote will control most TV's volume and mute via IR...

Finding a specific scene in a movie or show.
Press the Play/Pause button to pause the movie or show and use a circular gesture on the outer ring of the clickpad (similar to the iPod click wheel) to fast-forward or rewind, and find just the scene you’re looking for. Most video apps support this.

Skip backward or forward 10 Seconds at a time.
With a video playing, click the left edge of the clickpad to quickly skip backward 10 seconds. Click the right edge of the clickpad to quickly skip forward 10 seconds. Most video apps support this.

How do I pair a new Siri Remote with my existing Apple TV?
Preliminary information/instructions, will be updated if needed when new Siri remote arrives May 24-30.
1. Turn on Apple TV and position the Siri Remote so it’s within 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) and pointing at the front of the Apple TV box.
2. Press and hold the Back button (“<“) and Volume Up buttons for 2 seconds.
3. When the Siri Remote is successfully paired, an onscreen message appears.
When you pair a remote, any other previously paired remote is automatically unpaired.
Sometimes, you may be asked to place the remote on top of the Apple TV while pairing, but the process is otherwise automatic. If your Apple TV isn’t detecting the remote, try charging the remote for 10 minutes and try again.

Video introducing new Siri Remote (2nd generation) 2021 model at Apple Spring loaded event on April 20th, 2021.
Video should start at right place, if not fast forward to 16:41 to see introduction of new Siri remote, ends around 17:43.

Transcript of video
“Of course, the way you interact with Apple TV is with the Siri Remote. So this year, we completely redesigned it with new functionality and controls. It starts with a new one-piece aluminum design that fits perfectly in your hand, and with contrasting controls you can easily find and hit just the button you want. We also have a brand new clickpad, with five-way navigation for better accuracy, and the entire clickpad is touch enabled, preserving the fast directional swipes users love. And we did something pretty cool with the outer ring. We've given it a new circular gesture that turns it into a jog control. Perfect for finding just the scene you're looking for. We've also made it the only remote you need for your TV. It now has a Power button that controls your TV's power, and another for Mute. And we've moved the Siri button to the side, just like on your iPhone. The enclosure is made from 100 percent recycled aluminum joining Apple TV 4K and all of our products in furthering our commitment to reducing our environmental impact.” -Cindy Lin, Apple Spring loaded event on April 20th, 2021.

My Apple tv remote according to the settings is controlling the volume through IR and I did not have to program it

My Apple tv remote according to the settings is controlling the volume through IR and I did not have to program it
That makes sense since most TVs don't support volume via HDMI CEC, so the Siri remote sends IR to control volume. When it can Apple TV automatically programs the Siri remote with the needed IR codes for you.

I assume if my current ATV remote controls my soundbar rather than my TV's speakers, I will be able to set that up just as easily again.

If you are upgrading to the new Siri Remote and keeping your Apple TV box, all you need to to is to pair your new Siri Remote with your Apple TV box, no setup needed. Look at 1st FAQ for pairing instructions.

If you are upgrading to the new Apple TV 4K with the new Siri remote, your soundbar setup should work. You will need to set it up since settings from the old ATV are not be automatically transferred to the new ATV.

I have the new remote and it DOES NOT have an option to control three TVs power with the new power button. The new button just mimics the sleep functionality. So it still relies on HDMI CEC to control power of the TV which is unfortunate as my TV does not support CEC to turn off (only to turn on). The new mute button however can be programmed as per the volume buttons to control IR in the same way the previous remote did. Hopefully they add power to the IR.
