I’ve still got an Apple TV 3 in my dining room and my Apple TV 4 is in my living room. To be honest I don’t really see a point in upgrading to the 4K model or the new one. The HD one runs fine and I don’t have. 4K TV just 1080p ones. The games I run on there have no issues. After the keynote I didn’t really do anything new in TVOS that would make me worry if the HD didn’t get updated.
I didn't buy a 4K. I have the 4 aka HD. But I do prefer the 4 over my 3 because I can add apps and am not limited to only what the 3 provides. That plus having the voice search decided me and I've never regretted the decision.

Oh I prefer my 4 over my 3 and it was worth the upgrade. My issue is that there is very little incentive for me to upgrade from the 4 to 4K.

Two reasons:
1. Thinking late summer or Late Fall we’ll get an update!
2. The change to new broadcast support video transmission change is not yet finished in USA to support 4K transmissions is future of 2022!

ATSC 3.0 adoption doesn’t really have anything to do with the availability of 4K content via the internet. 4K HDR is pretty much the norm for streaming (non-live) content nowadays. The only big omission is HBO Max.

I feel like at this point Apple should just hold out for the A14X and make a beast of an Apple TV, though I suppose they could do a more budget A12/A13 model alongside it for people who aren't super concerned with any of the gaming aspects.

Now I feel like folks posting in the iPhone thread wondering if they should wait for an iPhone 12 or buy an SE now.

I have a 4th gen that we use heavily. Buying a 4K just doesn’t seem worth it in terms of an improved experience. My TV is a Sony 4K but it doesn’t have HDR. Looks pretty damn good as is. I’ll keep waiting for the new box.
Just not buying on principle of almost 3 years old. Even if current model does Somewhat okay. Apple miked the original air pods in the same way.

They milk many things for as long as they can get away with. They did the same thing with Airport routers before finally getting out of the market. The frustrating thing here is there is a gaping issue with the remote.

Gotcha. Same. I don't even own a 4K TV so it doesn't make sense for me at this time.

Why? The price of large 4K TVs has become so cheap, and their image quality is so much better, I can't imagine not upgrading.

Not all of us have extra money to burn. ;)

It's been a couple years of serious bills I'm still paying off, ie: total right hip replacement. Then vet bills, mortgage, other more vital necessities. Then COVID hit and I lost work beginning 1st week of February. I also don't like adding to landfills after shooting a commercial at one and seeing the reality of how quickly we are running out of free space for so much single use plastic or those who feel the need to upgrade electronics every cycle. I'm an environmentalist so try to do my part keeping my carbon footprint down.

But that's just me. YMMV.

Do you realize that, if Apple puts such a powerful SoC in the Apple TV, it could run macOS? 😂
Actually, it can run it with just the A12X, yeah. I think Apple will put just an A12 or A13 if they update the Apple TV.

To me Apple’s return to single Processors that Apple TV might cone with opens possibilities in the future!

So dumb to not put out the new device already. Especially if it's 'ready to go' as reported here.
They launch AppleTV+ last fall and don't support it with a new device to get some momentum. Pretty stupid.

I just got a new tv and I’m ready to buy an appletv. I hope the new version of appletv releases this month. What are the chances?

Nobody knows :( there have been many rumours it should release "soon" for a while now and even that it's ready to ship. I expected it to have been released quite a while ago but maybe they're waiting for something? Maybe they decided to change it and release it in a different form.

hopefully they will go with a more powerful chip than the A12X and have something up their sleeve in the gaming department.

probably due to manufacturing shuttering because of Covid-19.

That’s possible for sure. I’m thinking they are delaying for a fall AppleTV+/Arcade blockbuster to build hype. Not as much TV is watched in the summer compared to in the fall in general. Guessing they are intentionally delaying it for the fall hardware announcement (iMac/iPhone 12/Apple TV etc.).

irritating lol but as long as it releases in time for season 2 of The Mandalorian i won’t have any real issues haha.

Any new version would be an incremental update that 99% of the consumers for this line of product would not notice from previous gen. Apple TV has an extremely low Apple Arcade conversion that it isn’t in the equation.

The current box is still overkill for most apps that people use daily. Sure a new remote and updating to the latest HDMI standard is cool but not anything to wait for if you want one now. One valid reason I see for holding on is a potential price drop on current 4K in which case I’ll add another to my home.

Yea, well, even so, an A12 version would be much more future proof, so there is just no way Im buying the current model

yeah I feel the same way. I’m just hoping it drops soon. I’m ready to buy. Using the built in apps on my tv for the time being. it’s just not the same.
