Since that tweet, nothing had happened. It looks like it is not going to happen until all-in-one is released. It means iPhone 12, iPad, iWatch and so on.

I'm thinking to purchase Apple TV 4K 32GB.
I just got Canal + and Prime Amazon in Europe but I'm tired to connect the laptop to the TV each time I want to watch something ( I have old HD TV) I was considering "whatever" such as Xiaomi Mi S Box because all I want is to stream or use my iPhone for Mirroring. However, reviews of the Android box are not good. Too many issues and I always preferred AppleTV, but the price was an issue. However, I learnt on many occasions that "One gets what one pays for".

Reading all posts here I began to think whether to go ahead and pay 199euro for AppleTV 4K which all I need is to watch movies or wait for a new one which might be cheaper too. How about 4K firmware as iPhone always have? Of course, we cannot upgrade hardware but some other benefit such as play YT 4K. I don't care about pip either.
I don't want to wait until October or November. I'm not an Arcade gamer or any gamer. I don't play games. I watch only YT tutorials, nothing else, so maybe the current version would be enough. The only concern I have is future updates. They may stop soon.
What would you advise? Thanks

Doubt updates would stop anytime soon for the current hardware. Worst case I'd assume would be 6 or 7 years down the line, at the pace they refresh the device.

That’s possible for sure. I’m thinking they are delaying for a fall AppleTV+/Arcade blockbuster to build hype. Not as much TV is watched in the summer compared to in the fall in general. Guessing they are intentionally delaying it for the fall hardware announcement (iMac/iPhone 12/Apple TV etc.).

True, except this is a summer unlike any other. With so many people quarantined and spending more time at home in general, why not drop an updated Apple TV if it’s ready to ship?
Maybe this week along with the updated Intel iMac. Otherwise, the window is closing on summer product releases.

Hope so, satchmo,

My current broadband supplier are offering me the A10 Apple TV with 6 months ATV+ if I take a slightly upgraded package.

I'm surprised the A12(X?) ATV hasn't dropped yet. The current model is getting on a bit.

An A12z (as we saw from WWDC2020) is quite a potent performer...with sound gpu capabilities. More than enough for the 'casual' gaming market.

Azrael.

Just get your credit cards ready. I caved and got a 4K so it should release any day now.
same here, got a 4k this week ... I do however not believe there will be a new one before the fall, at the earliest ...

It's probably a chicken and egg issue. The A10X is perfectly fine playing back 4k60 HDR video and is still pretty nippy in games so how does Apple sell the new box to customers? The main benefit an A12X/Z chip would bring is faster graphics/cpu for games but at this point would casual gamers even care? It sounds like Apple Arcade isn't the runaway hit it might have been if there were more AAA titles and there won't be more AAA titles unless Apple increases the number of subscribers or flashes the cash to developers. The only other new hardware would be HDMI 2.1 which again is mostly benefits for gamers (VRR is an easy sell to non-casual gamers, but the casual gamer probably doesn't care about frame tearing). Benefits like QMS to eliminate the black screen when switching resolution / frame rate aren't going to sell a new £180 box.

No its not. The only 4k60 HDR movies I know of are Billy Lynn and Gemini Man, but none of those will play on Apple TV 4K

That’s mostly an attempt to push sales of UHD Blu-Ray along with the industry continuing to use 24fps as a standard rather than a technical limitation of the Apple TV.

The ATV GUI is 4K/60 so we know it works just fine. The Steam Link app also supports 4K/60 as well as playing any movie shot on an iPhone in 4K/60.

I actually ripped both in HFR (60), and I cant get them to work, so I dunno. Plex devs are saying the ATV doesnt support it. Please enlighten me how.

It’s a Plex app limitation. People have had more success with 4K/60 using Infuse.

So frustrating to be sitting and waiting. My third-gen is on its last breath but I really don't want to bite the bullet to replace it now.

This summer of staying home was the prime time to launch it...well actually back in the fall for Apple TV+ would have been the best time.

Release the new model Apple!

Paying top rate for almost 3 year old hardware just not right anyway.

Would be intriguing if the A12X hoax (?) only was created to get to Prosser's source. In reality, Apple TV will get the newest A14 chip because it's not a problem to manufacture (if the yield fits for hundreds of millions of iPhones, it will surely be okay for a few ATV units as well).

Yeah, I'm starting to feel hopeful again that the AppleTV will get some A14 variant given the delay. If they are planning on sticking with the A12X(or Z) then it seems very strange to wait. It certainly is a nice chip, and a big step up, but nothing to warranty a separate announcement or big fanfare I think.

They've done quite(ish) launches of bigger products this year.

It’d be helpful if everyone just stopped buying the 4K. That’d spur the release of the next box. The comment above about paying top dollar for 3 year old tech is right on. I’m an Apple guy all the way but this is crap. Cut the price way down to $100 and it’s still one of the most expensive boxes.

Its old tech but its still one of, if not the, best streaming boxes. I'm not an "apple guy", I buy what works the best for the task. I had to make a decision on what I was going to standardize on in the house for ease of the family dynamic, and tried hard to go with something else, but my testing just brought me back to ATV4K, in spite of the Siri Remote. So I bought a 2nd one for now, and will probably end up with a 3rd pretty soon. If Tivo got the bugs fixed in the Tivo Stream 4K, I probably would have gone that route. Its integration experience with Channels DVR is perfect... but they've had bugs since launch that ruin it and broken promise after broken promise to fix them.

The Nvidia Shield is really the only one that is close among main brands, and its in the same price range for the two models.

After I wrote this, I thought of the Nvidia Shield, but that device is much more than just a streamer of Netflix and content apps. The GeForce Now experience is what the shields were targeted for. I had one, and thought it worked pretty good on a wired connection for streaming my PC games to my TV but sold it as my performance on a Steam Link was about the same and much cheaper.

People who buy the Shield usually want it for the ability to stream games from their computer to the TV and using the Android based streaming apps is just a value add.

Unless Apple plans to do a lot more with the ATV, a bump to A12X would benefit almost no one in current use cases. Apple is also no where near to being a competitor for gaming consoles for more reasons than just hardware in the next couple of years.

I also think a new ATV would pave the way for two tiers. Dare I say an ATV Pro?

It would be nice to pick up the current 4K ATV for cheaper.
