A bigger reason to update still is that it's old. People don't want to pay full price for a 3-year old device. If Apple wants to keep selling Apple TV 4K as is, it should minimally lower the price to Apple TV HD's price point of $149.

Even bigger reason to update is to replace the polarizing Siri Remote. I realize some people love it, but the overall reputation is decidedly mixed.

As I wrote on my earlier comment, better processor can also enable new codecs (e.g., AV1 and H.266 VCC), faster HomeKit Secure Video analysis, and improved video processing (upscaling). HDMI 2.1 would also reduce the lag when refresh rate changes. On my Apple TV 4K, it takes about 1 to 1.5 seconds for the mode to switch.

I don't think being old really qualifies for AV equipment - especially the Apple TV 4K. The name says everything the customer needs to hear - it's from Apple and it will play 4K content in HDR (even from YouTube from next month). Yes, there are things missing like HLG (and iPlayer 4K support in the UK), HDR10+, DTS and lossless audio passthrough support, but these are things Apple has decided not to license/implement rather than hardware limitations. Things like supporting new codecs or the HDMI 2.1 features (like the QMS you mention) are not going to get the majority of Apple TV customers to upgrade (spend a further £180 and eliminate 1 second of blank screen when starting a film, have access to codecs which aren't going to be mainstream for years and get slightly better looking games).

Now, if Apple had a killer new feature or really pushed Apple Arcade then a new Apple TV would be justified.

I’ve just bought a four month old 32Gb AppleTV 4K for £90 which I thought was a pretty good deal.

I also couldn't wait anymore. I had been hanging on with a Gen 2 Apple TV in my bedroom TV, waiting to upgrade when the new Apple TV dropped. This was before the app store became available. I've cut the cord so no cable TV, but now with live basketball back, it was getting really frustrating only able to watch on my MBP or have to connect with a USB-C -> HDMI connector to watch on TV (Airplay didn't work for the sports streaming platforms in Canada I wanted to use, but they have Apple TV apps).

I found a new-in-box Apple TV 4K 32GB on secondary market for US$135 and pulled the trigger. Super happy with it. I totally understand the perspective that if not gaming, unlikely a new processor in a new Apple TV would make a difference to me. That being said, still felt "wrong" to pay full price for a 3yr old A10X processor, and you never know if you could find a use out of new features until it's released.

Thoughts on the remote?

Haha, I had heard over the years about the many dislikes, but given i didn’t have it, didn’t really care. I’ve had it for a week and used it now enough times. I can say I hate it. The touch tracking is terrible - quite inconsistent. I get the frustrations haha

reading the last few pages I thought I was going to break weak & buy a current model but...nope. Thank you for your response.

Naturally this means that the new model will be released within a few days.

Hi,

where did you buy that from. i'm on the look put for a cheap one for the spare room

Anyone know when this one year free subscription offer is over? I'd like to take advantage of it.

It's getting more difficult holding out for a new one. May have to resort to picking up a 'current' gen ATV 4K.

The Apple TV could become a more powerful gaming platform with new hardware updates and a new controller. Prosser says that Apple is building a gaming controller to compete with the current selection of Playstation and Xbox controllers.
The "Apple TV 6" is ready and has been waiting to ship for months. It is expected to have the latest A12Z processor for better gaming experiences. Prosser says he has photos of the product, but will not share them publicly.

I believe within ninety days of purchase of a qualifying product.

not happening anytime soon. It takes more than hardware. It takes game publishers and devs. There is little incentive to port AAA games to the Apple TV. A lot Dev houses even stopped porting to Nintendo hardware as they rarely recouped their costs. Apple would need to not only court developers but invest immense resources to sway people to take in seriously.

Oh and with most AAA titles easily going over 50 gig installations and the premium price Apple puts on storage space what do you think the price tag would be for a 1 TB Apple TV?

Here's my rant from another thread:

I didn't buy the AppleTV 4K in 2017 when it dropped because my AppleTV 4th generation was still "new-ish" and I didn't have a 4K television anyway. (still don't). But now, I'm sitting here with a 2015 device, not exactly wanting to upgrade to a 2017 device. Spoiler alert, it's a terrible experience. It lags, it freezes, it gives up, it's the worst. How does Apple launch AppleTV+ and not launch a new device the same year (or following year)?

Anyhow, as I said on my twitter, if Apple don't refresh the AppleTV box in this calendar year, I am going to ditch my Mac, iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Apple Watch, HomePod, CarPlay, iCloud, etc. etc. and go full evil Windows/Android/Google/Alexa/Chromecast/FireStick whatever.

Rant over.

You own a HomePod and your biggest complaint is the AppleTV?

I have the 4th Gen and 4k. Love them both. The 4th is a bit slower than the 4k but perfectly useable.

What do you need that the 4k can't do at the moment?

Trying to integrate Windows/Android/Google/Amazon together can be an extremely frustrating experience.

I have a 4th gen ATV, it doesn't lag or freeze or give up. Indeed it's nearly identical to the 4k version in every way except that it can't play 4k files in Infuse. Other than that, I don't notice any difference between the two.
