New Apple TV to Start at $149, Feature Universal Search With Siri

to much if there is no app store just a remote/search dose not do it for me... fingers crossed

Apple needs to support 4K on this.

Also Apple needs to solve world hunger, and build an underground hyperloop tunnel between Fort Myers and Orlando.

I'm in, but only if the hyperloop is in the shape of a Mobius strip and operates at NLS.

I look forward to seeing how they plan to market it to APTV3 users. They've been saying app store for a while in rumor reports. They could have done that already. And what do I need a remote for? I've got an iphone and ipad. That type of extra should be a separate item to purchase rather then jack up the price. Since the rumors of a price change came out I've pretty much said I won't be purchasing this item. It's simply not worth a price upgrade based on these reports. But again I'll wait another week to see what they really have in this. If the interface isn't a 100% new then that's going to be a huge step down as well, their current OS is dreadful.

the search isn't something i am SUPER EXCITED about...this is something that could have been done with typing years ago.

I hope this isn't a KEY FEATURE

Really? The hard part is for the AppleTV to know exactly what content is running on each of your services. That requires a cloud-based assistant. So, how would you have done this "years ago"?

I hope the other apps can tap into that universal search.

For example, if there is a Tablo app that lets you watch your recorded OTA shows, it can search those; or if there is a Plex app, it can search those shows/movies as well. Also it would be cool if the universal search lets you search your imported and tagged iTunes movies and TV shows.

Yeah, Siri and Motion.... they can have those. I want an app store/apps so I can play my favorite iOS games on my TV with a great controller. I also want to a TV sub that lets me choose what I want to watch and pay for live channels which I want to pay for. All this other fluff, I can do without. They should make it more like Roku, where you can easily plug in your own content networks. If they make this a more expensive walled garden, no thanks.

If they open the Apple TV up to app developers, I don't know what would be stopping Amazon from making a Prime Video app for the platform. Well, besides Apple's App Review team.
The problem with Amazon app on the Apple TV will be the same as on the iPad. No way to purchase anything from the app. Revenue thing as Apple takes a chunk out of every app purchase. Still need to do most of the work via Safari and the voice search maybe helpful but limited for this reason. My guess.

Now if it will also have mifi controller support then some nice games will be released.

I think the rumors are far too "strong" for there not to be an App Store. At the very worst, it will be a more strictly curated one than for mobile devices.

Oh that could do it! That could be the big cool feature that makes Apple TV different - unify the various streaming services with one searchable interface.
Wouldn't be all that useful for me since I only need Netflix, but if it also worked in streaming files from a PC or Mac, or Apple devices connected to the same network that would make me get one.

So if the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT would only be the overall search capability i'd be pretty disappointed. Hope there will be a hell of a lot more to it, tbh

I'm hoping the basic doesn't loose features to the top tier.

My ATV3 was used for streaming all my data. Not downloading content to it.

I can't really see that happening, Apple don't tend to fragment their products too much.

I think the only difference in the tiers will be amount of storage.

Interestingly, we bought a Roku 3 about a few months back (got a huge discount on it) to use mainly with Amazon Prime and SlingTV. I had pretty much pooh poohed the Rokus before that as not offering that much I really wanted to see.

While I still pretty much feel the same way, I find that the search feature on the Roku is one of the pleasant surprises that I really like. In fact, sometimes I've used it to search for something before I decide if I want to watch it on my Apple TV!!

Overall, I definitely like the overall user experience on the Apple TV better than either the Roku OR the Fire (I own all three).

I guess if Apple gets the universal search AND adds Amazon Prime, that'll be two more reasons to dump my Roku. (And finally, if they offer a good package like Sling TV, then that's the final reason!)
