YES. The most important feature is there: UNIVERSAL SEARCH.

Liking the other stuff, but UNIVERSAL SEARCH is the one thing that's sorely needed more than anything.

I have Roku and Apple TV. I use both. I mainly use Roku for the Amazon content. If the new Apple TV has Amazon I'll give the Roku to my children to use. I'm ok with the cost if everything rumored about this is really there. For the rumored functionality I would have thought Apple would charge much more.

If Apple does not allow Vudu, Amazon, Spotify and Netflix (redesigned UI) then $149 is simply not worth it. Hopefully this app store will be a welcome change in direction.

How about this.... We currently get cloud storage from Apple. What if this device became a sort of cloud based storage device for our pictures, videos and so on? I know, totally far fetched but just throwing it out there. Cheers!

I like the idea, but they could have simply build that into the Airport router series, no need to wait for the Apple TV.

I think this whole thing about Storage tiers is probably wrong. The whole idea around AppleTV2 was that you'd no longer download content, but stream it.

You also won't need a lot of storage for Apps, unless we get a full gaming Apple TV with very high performance games. Streaming apps should take very little space.

Yes that's the idea, but I wouldn't say no to some offline capabilities.
For example someone could bring his Apple TV on vacation in an hotel or in a vacation house without broadband connectivity and be able to watch some movies and play games in case there is bad weather.
Not the main use case for this product, but it may happen. You can always share the connection with your iPhone, but data plans with lots of GB can be really expensive

I agree...it better be 4k.

I doubt it will be. They need people to have incentive to upgrade in 2 years when they finally release a 4k one. The ATV 2 was only 720p when 1080p was well established, 4k is still a niche.

Seems strange that a universal search feature would require new hardware. My Tivo premier (which is 3 years old), already does this. Secondly, I'm surprised Apple isn't doing away with the remote altogether (i.e. to help drive iPhone/iPad/Apple watch sales), considering the same functionality is already built into the Apple Remote App for iOS)

Personally I hate the Remote App, and love having a physical remote.

I do not use the little Apple silver remote on any of my Apple TVs, but the remote learning feature is used to "teach" the Apple TV to use the TV's remote.

So one remote for everything. I hope this doesn't go away.

i hope they do the same for music

Exactly (re: universal search)...the whole Select "Apple Music" or "My Music" part of search in the Apple Music app is the dumbest thing. I feel like they keep trying to redirect me into iTunes to buy music rather than stream when I use that thing. Navigation is just horrid.

Sorry my off topic rant now done.

No and I believe its down to Apple?

Why would Amazon want to be on Apple TV when they are trying to push their own hardware and services. Too many competitive issues going on here and besides... is there any content on Amazon that you can't get other places or is it just a price thing? If it's just a price thing, maybe we'll see some better pricing alternatives from Apple for iTune based video's? That's due for an overhaul to be more competitive.

I doubt it too - and without good 4k content it would be premature adding cost to the box where few would use it.
Also I think the whole data-cap thing needs to settle out once people start cutting the cord for their 2016 cable-alternative service.

They need to support 4k + add 4k movies to iTunes. Apple needs to be the leader in things again instead of playing catch-up.

I agree fully, but I just don't think they'll do it just yet. You never know though. I could be completely wrong (as usual haha!)

I wouldn't say there fire phone or tablets are a great hit to be a competitor maybe that could be the reason why the push to other companies, but I was guessing at a question so as for pricing etc is doesn't affect me.

The reason for me thinking it down to Apple is due to what apps would allow on ATV

At $99 it was worth it. At $149 not so much, no Apple tax for me this time. I already have plenty of devices capable of streaming content to my Television. The only thing I use my Apple TV for is watching movies I purchased on iTunes and podcasts. That is pretty much the extent of it. Xbox One does literally everything else including Amazon. It has become my primary streaming device.

In before the "OMG, $149 is too much! The competitors are much cheaper."

Yeah, but the other ones that are cheaper won't have the App Store and features that this AppleTV will have. I've been waiting for an AppleTV App store for years. It'll be nice to play casual games and use other apps natively only my big screen.

But for $50 less I can already do that on Roku and Fire TV

Amazon prime video is already on the iPad, and you can airplay it to the ATV today. Putting it on the ATV would be ultra-convenient, esp. with the universal search.

Tivo's universal search implementation is confusing. I just saw it the other day and I still have to pick apart what all the icons mean. Plus when I clicked into one episode it took me to some other program. They also didn't unify the metadata, so I think various episodes/seasons were jumbled up.

Maybe the ATV 4+ will have 4k, and the ATV 4 will just do straight 1080p.

My guess, it'll support 4K, if not out of the box, through a software update.

The tech for it will be built in, it just depends if it's turned on. (or Apple could end up blocking 4K on this model, and introducing it a year later with an update, similar to what they did with the update in early 2012.

My question is where is the 4K content coming from? From what I understand there's very little out there anyway so what's the point? I don't see them wasting their time on this until there's more content and demand.

I cant imagine (but would be surprised) if ATV4 had 4k viewing, I know a lot of people who own 4k TV's but I just don't think they can justify it compared to the majority, let alone the 4k content that is out there.

Maybe I'm wrong?

No content and no settled compression codec chosen. Just because you were tricked into buying a 4K TV before content was ready doesn't mean Apple owes you a 4K version. It would add extra cost to the box for the rest of us that are willing to wait it out. Not to mention what it would do to people with data caps.

The current Apple TV OS isn't bad but it certainly isn't good.

Lots of clicking, entering passwords is a nightmare and even with the iOS app its still a pain.

Siri will be the breakthrough remote for this device, just saying "play Walking Dead", then Siri comes back 'What season/episode..?'.. would be pretty neat.

Also how do they see Home Automation running on Apple TV?

If this is true, i'm sold. I had a Fire TV with voice search which was cool...but it was limited to amazon items.

Being able to search for something on netflix, hulu, itunes and others will be huge.
