I long for a NORMAL remote like what came with the original Apple TV. It was easy to figure out which end is up before you accidentally pushed the wrong button or swiped the glass. I would love to have Apple TV's throughout the house, but there's no way i'm going to saddle my elderly in-laws with the temperamental Siri remote.

I'm glad some of you guys enjoy it. It baffles me how, though.

A processor upgrade for the Apple TV, is not worthy of a one more thing slide. Something else is going on here.

The Apple TV for gaming is a horrible experience at the moment. That TV remote as controller was one of the worst ideas Apple has ever had.

Apple tv for gaming will never be a good experience. Besides no matter what they do with their remote, whether they redesign it, it'll go in a drawer. I'll stick with using a harmony. Unless Apple wants to compete with logitech or partner up with em for one.

If Apple again only changes the SoC, it will not accomplish a single thing they would need the Apple TV to be for the forseeable future.

Everything and everyone else is getting access to their services now, since Apple did open them up recently.

No one in their right mind would buy an Apple TV to play on it in it's current form or state of things.

There is a niche and that niche is not a tiny one, but it could get thin soon, if there are no reasons why people would need to upgrade an Apple TV, surely not for the performance alone, since the 10X is already a powerhouse.

Let's hope Apple understands that and they finally innovate on something and not just progress the current state with simple updates.

It's just going to hurt in the long run.

Gaming Edition Apple TV? With Apple controller and A-list devs on board?? One can dream! :D

Reality check: Even if Apple does release a "Gaming Edition" ATV, it won't matter unless Apple can bring over A-list console titles well suited for big screen gaming. Most people tend to enjoy iOS mobile games on.... well, the iOS mobile devices they were designed for!

Just to let you know, in case you did not already, you change where the Home button takes you. You can either leave it at default and have it take you to the the AppleTV App, or change it to take you to the Home Screen.

It is under Settings--->Remotes & Devices--->Home Button

:apple:

I’m aware, thanks. It’s the fact that Apple changed a hardware Home button to default into the AppleTV app that indicates their intention of importance of where “home” should be.

I couldn't care less about this. What will be new in the new Apple TV other than faster performance?

My guess, a Roku-branded Apple TV.

Roku has ALL the market momentum right now !

Check out their stock price & valuation if you haven't recently.

Specifically, Roku private labels the Apple TV, & sells it just above cost !

GAH! I know what you mean. I never just land on the right tile. I always have to swim around and then finally land on the one I want. I just can't get this down. HATE IT!
Put a skin on it, really helps resolving orientation in the dark.

What if it’s an actual TV?

Right after Apple went through all the effort to get the Apple TV app into almost all the major TV suppliers ?

https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/airplay-2/ ( Samsung , LG , Vizio , etc. )

Not very likely at all. Those folks aren't going to want to complete head-to-head with Apple. They'll tolerate the external box that is extra because at least they still sold the TV ( and frankly many of them aren't exicted about supporting the smartTV OS over several years of updates and security patches anyway. 5+ years from now will probably need a then current external "smart' box for those TVs anyway. ).

Apple needs breadth to make AppleTV+ to work far more than they need an actual TV. ( if dropping $6B on the former, then the latter isn't going to make that back. )

AppleTV fills the gap on the vast number of TVs already deployed out there that aren't going to be upgraded in the next 1-3 years. That is much bigger set of eyeballs they desperately need to keep AppleTV+ from being a flop.

I buy Apple TVs to extend Airplay 2 to a couple vintage analog stereo systems throughout my home. I use homepods in casual areas, but there’s no way HomePods can compete with QSC K12’s or Marantz 3-way floor speakers.

Since killing off optical audio and 1/8” stereo output jacks on ATV and Airport Express, it’s forced me to rig up cheap amazon hdmi pass thru adapters, which makes the aesthetic of wires and AC adapters a total mess. I’m probably leaving the AirPlay ecosystem if they don’t address this soon. It’s sooooo simple to include analog output.

Apple has placement in Samsung , Vizio , LG and the rest of the top 5 TV sellers. Roku isn't going to bring anything. Between Samsungs Tizen , AndroidTV , and LG's WebOS/Andriod combo that is actually a bigger combined share than Roku.

Over time Roku might get bigger enough later so they may have to do an App later. But Apple is extremely unllikely to use someone else's operating system on one of their products. Even more so when they already have one for that specific area!!!!!! Just won't happen even if in some weird corner case Apple jumped into the TV panel market that they have left to the 3rd parties. .

P.S. even if Apple didn't have a TV operating system, Roku's revenue model is selling ads underneath the TV services. Apple ( 'we are the privacy company' ) isn't going to play that at all. Not as the core OS for the product.

Slightly more exciting than expected. Funny enough, I have an Apple TV 4K, and it's not even connected to a 4K TV. I just wanted something that would stutter less and my grandparents needed a 1080p Apple TV for streaming so that's what happened. I'm going to sign up for Apple Arcade, so if it seems like it's taking off more I might upgrade for the living room TV later on since it will work with my Xbox controllers. I'm planning on getting a large 4K display this autumn or winter and have a 4K display downstairs that I could hook up to the old one.

I use Apple TV to get iTunes 4K and to get Dolby Atmos from Netflix 4K.

I have the Netflix 4K app on my TV, but I don't get Dolby Atmos over ARC. eARC would solve that problem, but that would require that I buy a new HDMI 2.1 receiver to support eARC, and a new TV as well.

Bingo. I use my ATV into my receiver for the best audio. TV's ARC is too limited. So I use external boxes and never touch the built in tv apps.

It's pretty much the same for me.

An A/V question, if you all don't mind: the Apple TV 4K is pretty much the only component missing from my Apple ecosystem. Felt redundant with my other devices (XB1X, PS4 Pro, Fire TV 4K, and my built TV apps). The thing is, each of the aforementioned has odd quirks (e.g., similar apps on the different platforms may or may not have support for 4K/HDR/Atmos, etc).

Does the Apple 4K have similar quirks, or is it generally the best box for 4K HDR + Atmos (or least Dolby TrueHD & DTS MA)?

I've already seen a preview of the new Apple glasses:

Still looking cool 30 years later! I remember I had a pair of these as a kid.

The AppleTV is really a fantastic product, however, it *really* needs to be cheaper. Much *much* cheaper. The 4K AppleTV should be no more than £99.

Or Apple needs to more clearly highlight the add value of it. More of the Apple Home value add (local camera video snapshots). "Good enough" gaming box ( hence relatively cheaper than a Xbox , Playstation. )

Highlight how they do something value add with the 32/64GB of storage. ( other than store "big' game apps).

Pause for an hour Live TV and come back. Did something with Over the Air (OTA) TV out of the box ( easy hook LAN network tuner ) . Or stream out of local cache to other iOS devices on local LAN so don't burn up monthly bandwidth cap.

The AppleTV is more expensive because there is "more" there than on a commodity streaming stick. But if get into the zone of just running Netflix , Hulu, Amazon Video and the differences the AppleTV hardware is overkill.

No No NO!

You are providing really bad information.

The AVR can support eARC without being HDMI 2.1. There are numerous 2017 and 2018 and 2019 HDMI 2.0 AVRs that have been firmware upgraded to support eARC.

Also, no streaming services currently support HD audio... upgrading to eARC won't magically make your source material HD.

Dolby Atmos from Netflix and Amazon streaming services is NOT HD AUDIO. It is low bit-rate Atmos that is sent over the digital dolby + 640kbps channel. "Real" Atmos is sent over True-HD. If you want the full experience via eARC you would need a game console, BD player, etc., with HD audio content that can be sent over eARC to your eARC capable AVR.

Lossy Atmos from streaming services such as Netflix, vudu, iTunes, etc.

You get Dolby TrueHD/DTS MA support in infuse for your local content. It decodes and sends the lossless audio to your receiver as PCM.

It does not support lossless atmos or DTS:X.

There is no perfect streaming box out there but the ATV4k is pretty close. I use it for almost everything and only switch to my shield or oppo when I want lossless atmos or DTS:X from my 4k rips. Mostly the oppo as the shield doesn't support dolby vision.
