Dolby Atmos. Unless you have all HDMI 2.1 equipment, don’t expect Dolby Atmos to work unless you have an external device. It’s not a matter of performance, but of HDMI standards. ARC in HDMI 2.0 doesn’t officially support Dolby Atmos. eARC in HDMI 2.1 does.
exactly right. Otherwise there is some sync (audio ahead of lagging video that increases) issue because the Apple TV 4k (5th generation) is not HDMI 2.1 ...

You do not need eARC for Atmos on smart TV apps.

You need eARC's bandwidth to carry TrueHD+Atmos, but that's only used for Blu-Ray, or Dolby MAT (PCM+Atmos), which is used external devices like consoles, computers, and Apple TV.

Streaming services use eAC3+Atmos, which fits within the eARC channel and is used by devices like Vizio soundbars.

Lol for what is the A12 not enough? You’re not gonna run LumaFusion on your TV.

A10X and A12 are pretty close in terms of graphics performance, so if Apple chose the A12...they're not doing it to upgrade the system. To me, A13X is more likely now. Apple will use the same SoC in the updated 2020 ATV as in the 2020 iPad Pro lineup, just like they did back in 2017 with the A10X.

I got tired of waiting for the refresh. Very happy with my new roku.

But still excited to see what updates Apple makes.

I have always used ATV's from the start; giving away the older units (family food chain if you will). Currently have 3 ATV 4k (5th generation) and they work great... except that it needs HDMI 2.1 both to support eARC thruput situations, and for Atmos to be better relayed.

Another issue: relying on certain Apps (like AT&T TV Now) requires switching between 1080p SDR (otherwise you get judder and lag) until AT&T supports 4k which so far they don't (I thought ATV would have automatic adjustments but it doesn't now). And I have to switch to 4k SDR or HDR in-order to watch Apple TV+ programming correctly. This could and should be automatic; but importantly adding HDMI 2.1 will really help.

You need eARC to actually expect Atmos to work consistently, since Atmos over ARC usually doesn’t work as the implementation is non-standard. It CAN work over ARC, but most of the time it won’t, unless you are very, very careful in the equipment combinations you buy.

BTW, my TV supports Atmos over ARC, and my receiver supports Atmos over ARC, but the combo together doesn’t actually give me Atmos.

I miss plasma! My Panasonic was one of the highest rated TVs ever made. SAD, I sold it when we moved

Panasonic made incredible plasma TVs, I still have a 42 and it’s got a beautiful picture. I think if it were 4K it could rival OLED, that last generation of plasma was great.

This is most welcome, but what we really need is software that doesn’t suck.

The bugs and poor design choices in the AppleTV app are appallingly bad.

My Apple TV 4K is awesome, I can’t imagine bothering to replace it any time soon. It’s very snappy, everything just works, integrates into my home AV system beautifully, I never need my TV or receiver remote controllers. I don’t really care either way about the bundled remote, I usually just use my iPhone. The only time I ever get frustrated is using the YouTube app, which is dog sh*t. Nice job Google! 💩

Gaming.
IMO, it's likely Apple repeats what it did with the ATV 4K: give it the same SoC as the iPad Pro model released in the same year. In 2017, that was the A10X. In 2020, it will likely be the A13X.
Even better if they put in an A13X. Plenty of power and future-proof for upcoming games.

Yeah I love my plasma too.. Still keeping 65" Samsung plasma beside the C8 OLED I bought last year. At the end of its production, it was pretty much a perfect display technology, no more burn in or any other drawbacks, except for power consumption. It still makes modern 4k LCD looks bad really.

Maybe to support the AV1 Codec?
YouTube is also converting from VP9 to AV1. Apple is on Alliance for Open Media (which AV1 is a part of), so
if A12 is capable of decoding AV1, that would be a huge win for consumers.
How is the performance on A12? I think the current AppleTV has a A10X?
My hope is Apple TV with A12 replacing Apple TV HD 32GB ($149) and Apple TV with A12X replacing Apple TV 4K 64GB ($199). Both running at 4K, of course.

I would, of course, love deeper price cut on the cheaper model, even if it means simplified remote control without Siri.

About time. The current Apple TV 4K is one of the worse products there is in the market in terms of price/performance. It uses ancient hardware, and yet is priced more than a gaming console (that can do the same things and more, having much more powerful hardware).

Apple still sees this as a hobby project outside of the US, lots of features missing, I bought one about 2 ½ -3 years ago, rarely using it, but then again, I am not much into TV/films/series.
Should have sold it years back, or not buying it at all.
The remote sucks, they really need to rethink that one, too sensitive, something like LG's remote with a pointer would be much better.

I recently got a 4K model, used, and I have to admit, the simple adjustments made it much better. 1. a white circle around a menu button you can also feel in the dark makes that okay. You get far fewer false choices happening because you brushed something. Putting it down must still be done carefully, though, or you suddenly find yourself watching something you didn't choose.

    • Quick Media Switching (QMS)
    • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • Faster processor: Yes
  • 4K AI: Since tvOS insists on upscaling, I understand your desire for a better upscaler. I would much prefer "Match Resolution" added to "Match Contents" settings, so that my TV does the upscaling instead of Apple TV
  • External HD: Don't count on it. Apple wants you to use "Media Sharing" feature built-in to macOS Catalina or "Home Sharing" built-into iTunes.
  • New remote: We can only hope.
  • HDMI 2.1: I would be shocked if revised Apple TV is still stuck on HDMI 2.0. 2.1 would improve Apple TV's perceived gaming performance, and quick media switching should help with match match frame rate (and my match resolution wish)

Maybe to support the AV1 Codec?

This is from today today:
Netflix rolls out more efficient AV1 video codec, starting with Android

Apple already supports the AV1 codec. It's just that open-source thing that Google, and only Google, do support, that Apple won't. The AV1 is fine. Yes, that could be it. I don't know if the AV1 is already built into Apple TV 4K, though.

I never had a plasma TV, so can't say that I miss it. But I did have an i3, and I definitely miss that car!

We've had 3 and I'm considering our 4th. So many exciting EV's coming over the next few years. I wish the US was getting eh iD.3 which resembles the i3 closely IMO. An iD.4 might be ok too, we'll see soon enough.
