I'll cede it was hyperbole. However, time after time, the people I'm around with Verizon phones can almost always get signal, whereas us GSM users are more hit and miss. In my 3.5 years of using an iPhone NEVER has a CDMA phone user said they do not have signal and I did. NEVER. I do a little traveling now and again, and this is always the case.

A great example! I too have experienced this many times and it is very frustrating.

Monday, my pain ends.

I'm an AT&T customer and I have no intentions of switching carriers, but I have to say that this is weak, AT&T.

Verizon's was much better.

No one gives a crap about simultaneous voice and data. Do something about a better network or something.

I absolutely love this. Verizon and AT&T users going at it now.

And they each have reasons to puff out their chests.

One has more reliable phone coverage. The other has faster speeds and can talk and surf.

Love it, I tell ya... LOVE IT!

That is a pretty weak response. He could NOT wait for the phone call to end. There's absolutely no need to have voice and data at the same time. Verizon smartphone customers have been doing for how long now and we survive easily without it. What are the chances of this happening in real life? Extremely slim to none.

Sorry AT&T... Verizon's massive coverage (important for me since I travel a lot and AT&T 3G coverage is very spotty in my area) > voice + data. You should focus on the 3G speed over Verizon using data gathered by tech sites. That would be far better than trying to convince people that the need for voice + data outweighs 3G coverage.

Actually there's every reason in the world to have data + voice (its 2011 there's no reason not to have data + voice on a phone like this) though I'm also guessing if you're not use to it then you probably wont miss it but since I've got that feature it comes in very very handy. For me its about as important as having clear calls or as you said coverage.

I'll give you an example, I do a lot of PC/Mac consulting so I'm on the phone with a client traveling between jobs and I'm able to be in the truck (not driving of course) talking to my client in addition to being able to pull up exactly the information he or she needs along with what I'm talking about. Since I seem to have a bad memory on very specific details regarding new/different technologies that I may not always use personally in every day life. It's extremely handy to be able to follow along with my client on the go, follow along with what I'm talking about so its clear to them on what they need to do to fix a problem or answer a question. I really cant say sorry let me call you back after this call while I look up exactly the information the client needs or say sorry let me get back home in a few hours and then answer your question.

Yup, it's the Superbowl warmup! :)

A better illustration for the stupid commercial would have been the dope not in a wifi area.

I'm in this situation frequently...talking to a client, but needing to answer an immediate text while not in a wifi area.

AT&Ts got you covered...your call may drop out or you can't hear it well, but they got you covered!

Really? I mean really? the 0:32 second of a phone call that reminded the douche bag he forgot his anniversary & so for those 0:12 seconds at the end he could make a connection to the web for reservations?! I mean the douche probably won't even get reservations now because he has to get ole girl in like 10 minutes. And back to my point, I would keep the Verizon iPhone and once I get off the 32 SECOND phone call...I'll get on the web find the number to the restaurant and actually be able to call and talk to them and make a reservation because I'm not on AT&T...

"using the internet" doesn't just mean safari. EVery app with online capabilities such as google maps, heyway, email, instant messaging and the like can all be used fully while in a call.

I often exchange emails with a client while on the phone to them away from my desk as well as messaging other people or opening a map while in a call.

heck, i even launch last.fm and have it play in "quiet" mode when in a call.

and as someone in the UK the whole AT&T/Verizon thing doesn't concern me in the slightest.

That's so fake! Where's the dropped call? And the redial?

Fear Appeal

Hi all,

If this has been said before, please label me impatient or lazy for not reading through all the posts. I agree with the OP and others who find the response a bit tepid. While I mostly do not like them, I think a fear appeal ad would-be been much more effective. Maybe it's a parent on the phone with their kid who needs directions out of a sketchy neighborhood or something to do with finances and online banking or buying stocks.

Anyway, I think they could have done better.

My 2¢

The guy in the commercial comes across as a total jerk.

But that's just my opinion.

Well, in the Verizon Ad, after the "can you hear me now" guy answered the phone, we never saw his data connection get dropped during a critical file download. (haha)

Do you also have non AT&T iphone device? If so how does it compare you your AT&T iPhone?

i had two blackberries and a razr on at&t and Cingular before that..and have had 2 iphones..i never experienced the amount of dropped calls that i do now.

i'd say its probably a combination of the phone's construction, and the fact that at&t never fortified its network enough to be able to be an exclusive provider of the iPhone AND provide reliable/acceptable service simultaneously.

Sadly for AT&T - they ignore the real issue (on purpose, it seems) that a phone should, before anything else, work like a phone.

Cant wait for my contract to expire. Bye AT&T!

Honestly, given a choice between "voice AND data" and "voice OR data", how can anyone say that not having both is better?

Voice & Internet Rock!

As a subcontractor I use my connection to the internet while on the phone almost daily. Mostly to pull up addresses my customers give me in Google maps to let them know instantly how close I am. They love it that I don't need directions too.

I also use it for date night planning with my wife just about every Friday night (we talk on the phone a lot so one or both of us will look up showtimes, reviews, etc..).

I would not give up this feature now that I'm used to having it, as it has MANY uses. People who defend their Verizon service with it's lack of this ability remind of land-line users. They'll eventually see the usefulness of new features - probably after we've been using them for years. I'm not knocking Verizon service, but the argument that "I've never needed this feature so it doesn't matter that my provider doesn't offer it" is just near-sighted.

I thought about it too. In the end, my business relies upon concurrent voice/data (I send XLSs/emails to customers and discuss them in realtime), international coverage (Verizon iPhone useless in Europe), much faster network access (here it is 3Mb compared to 1MB), and with my kids rollover minutes are a must.

I do actually find simultaneous voice and data to be quite useful, but I don't think this commercial illustrates very well the reasons why. How about someone driving with a nav app while on speaker?

Awesome. They should have him talk and surf at the same time while roaming in Paris. I would not touch the Verizon iPhone 4 even if it was given to me and the service was free. I travel globally and I make conference calls while sending and receiving email I don't give a **** if I might have slightly better service in some places in the US. Also I find ATT 3G to be faster then Verizons.

Not to mention when using wifi tethering. Verizon will drop the data connection every time you make or receive a call making it useless for conference calls while working etc at the same time. Right now I use the Bluetooth tethering while on a conference call and doing Webex.

"Nobody uses Simultaneous Voice/Data"

For those that say,"Nobody uses Simultaneous Voice/Data", let me remind you that nobody used a microwave oven or a dvd player until they had one. :)

Once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it. You Verizon users have been left in the 20th century for too long.

Worst Comeback

This is the only comeback that ATT has to verizon is to surf and talk on the web at the same time. Surfing the web and talking is not that important. I got along fine without it on my droid.
