Have 4 phones, 2 still under 2 yr contact.

Just moved to new plan, bill dropped $45 a month.
New phones are at $15, even though under contract

Gave up my unlimited as never, ever, ever went over 2gb. Usually under 1gb

Now have hotspot for the 3 hrs a month the ipad or pc needs a connection.

Will save me over $500 a year. Why not?

Full cost of the phone divided by 20 if you want to upgrade at 12 months

So two new 32 Gb iPhones would cost $1500 at full price.

On Next 12, I would pay $75/mo ($1500/20 = $75/mo) for 12 months?
That adds up to $900 ($75 x 12) to "rent" those iPhones for a year?
$1500 - $900 = $600. If I feel that I can sell the 2 iPhones after 12 months for more than $600 total, then I am better off buying the phones outright?

Yeah, pretty much.

I am interested in how many people will give up the precious yet worthless $30 unlimited plan for these new mobile share plans?

I guess we are free to keep unlimited forever; however, the bill will never decrease unless we switch over.

AT&T will never lift the 5GB throttle, which still affects a lot of us with unlimited smartphone plans.

That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing. We've never gone over 10Gb in a month with our 2 phones. I'd save money, use the same amount of data and have access to free tethering for the rare occasion that I need it and I won't have to jailbreak my phone anymore to get it.

Next program is essentially a leasing program with option to own outright at 20 months.

1. It's a horrible lease deal
2. Option to own outright at 20 months is fair. like a 0% interest loan. You keep phone if you made 20 payments.

Yeah. Same here. Would be saving $20/mo and get more data plus hotspot. However, I fear that in the future AT&T will quietly lift the throttle. How many people will still have it anyway? We don't know if the unlimited plan will ever be unlimited again.

All of those who have $30 unlimited still benefit. Cause my 24% fan discount applies to the $30 data lines. So like paying $23.70 a month.

Plus I get discount from my voice minute also.

I also get a discount on it, but I don't care about that. I'm just getting pissed that every month they throttle me. I need more than 5GB, but no more than 10GB. But like I said, I fear they will make it truly unlimited again the future when hardly no one has it anymore.

They're not going to make it unlimited again. Part of the genius behind these new plans is that the lower rates will entice those still on the old unlimited plans to switch. They're trying to get people off those plans, so you can forget about them doing anything positive for customers who still have it. Share data plans are the new direction of AT&T.

What would be the incentive to get people off the unlimited plans? The people on the unlimited plans are not impacting the network. That would be pretty much impossible with the throttling. The people on tiered plans are now the ones using the most data. They just pay for more when they need it. But I would like to know why AT&T wants people off unlimited plans?

Corporate greed, money and revenue. Why should you pay $30 for 50 gb, even with throttling, when they can soak for you for $300?

It's frustrating that all the smart people in this thread have already done the math and clearly communicated it but I still have questions about how it affects me in the long term. Too many variables and not enough coffee. :(

I have 2 iphones on contract (unlimited data), one iPhone off contract, an iPad, and a 20% FAN discount not shown below.

Currently $200/mo:
  • iPhone on contract unlimited data - $120
  • iPhone on contract unlimited data - $40
  • iPhone off contract 200 MB data - $25
  • iPad 250 MB data - $15

New Mobile Share Plan - $205/mo:
  • $100
  • iPhone on contract - $40
  • iPhone on contract - $40
  • iPhone off contract - $15
  • iPad - $10

I'll reread the thread. Again. ;)

No, all your iPhones will be $15. You would be saving an extra $50/mo. It doesn't matter if they are on/off contract

Wrong he only gets it at $15 IF he switches his contract lines to Next. Otherwise it will be $40 a month until his contract rolls off, then it automatically switches to $15.

Wow this was a complete no brainer for me.

I had the 4GB family share plan before which was $70/mo and then had three smartphones at $40/ea and a LTE tablet at $10/mo. I have a 20% discount which only applied to the $70/mo so I was paying right at $200/mo.

Now I get the 20% off the $100/mo for the 10GB plan, and I'm paying $15/ea for each phone and still $10 for the tablet, saving $50/mo.

Let the extreme competition and price wars begin! All good for us, the consumers! :D

For NEXT...

If I trade in the phone after 12 months do I still pay the remaining 8? I don't get why anyone would trade in their phone every 12 months if they don't get a credit and have to continue paying on that phone as well as the new one purchased.

Not if you select the 10Gb/mo plan or above. If you do that, its only $15/phone and it doesn't matter if you are on contract.
I am on contract and this is from my account page.

I can confirm that even if you are on contract, just need to be before 2/2/2014 (which mean all of us would be if you haven't sign a new contract today). you can be in the $15 per line, ~ super!!!! see attachment for my old 10 GB and new 10GB plan comparison.

all 8 lines are on contract and I got to my confirmation page and still shows $15. Got that page saved and hit submit in case they shows something different on next month's bill.

Just want to make sure I am understanding correctly.

My family is on a $30 Mobile Share 10gb plan right now. Two iPhone 5 phones with 8 months left on 2 year contract term. If I switch to Next today, I can get two new iPhone 5s models with no money down and $75 per month mostly offset by going from $30x2/$130 to $15x2/$100. I can keep my old phones and they are now off contract. From this point forward I can swap my iPhones each year.

Is that right?

Also, what if I want to upgrade a little sooner than 1 year in the future (say in 10 months instead of 12)? Why I ask this is that if I do this today, I won't be lined up with Apple's iPhone upgrade cycle which is every September. If they release something particularly amazing, I might not want to wait. If I upgrade in 10 months, would I just be responsible for paying the two remaining months, and would my annual swap date move back the two months for future upgrades?

Sorry you are correct, even if you are on a contract you can still get it at $15. Sorry for the misinformation. Just changed over, 3 devices for $145.00 for me.

I don't disagree with your observations. All I can tell you is that two AT&T reps quoted me $40. But I'm the guy that can't get activation fees waived so maybe it's me. :D I'll check the website.

I can work through the monthly charge discrepancy, it's the "what happens at the end of my contract date" that's unclear. Must I go to Next, or enjoy my contract-free phone, or choose to show up with a new non-subsidized phone (and if so what happens to my old one).

But how will you ever hit 50GB if you are throttled to EDGE? You couldnt run any streaming media after throttling, so unless the phone is spamming out billions of text messages, I can't imagine how it would even get past 7 or 8 GB, once throttled. While the $30 plan is technically "unlimited" I would presume there is a practical limit on the amount of data that can be used before the month (or the users patience) runs out.
