I’m glad there’s finally 16 gb of memory on the base model.

Unfortunately, I seem to have found the next thing to complain about: it looks like the base chip (non-Pro/Max) doesn’t go beyond 24 gb. That’s disappointing for those of us who were hoping to at least consider replacing our MacBook Pros with Airs. :(

Incorrect, at least according to the MR story on the iMac announcement.

The new iMac comes with a minimum of 16GB of RAM, compared to 8GB for the previous base model, and it can be configured with up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage.

The iMac is not for me, but with 16GB it automatically feels like a far better product. Not hard to believe that Apple originally offered it with only 8G, what is hard to believe is that people bought it. Just as they did the 8GB MacBook Air. Lots and lots of them. Good for Apple.

Yay for 16GB base memory, but…

It's really crappy that the base model doesn't have a 2TB option. In reality that means a difference of:

1TB: € 1979
2TB: € 2689
= € 710

… between the cheapest models with that storage. What the actual **** Apple?
i meannn it is a desktop mac and it's super easy and cheap to add external storage.

Actually it looks like it requires 512GB of storage or more to get the 32GB option

Yeah - you have to start with the "better" or "best" model to get the 32GB option - but, honestly, that pretty much makes sense. 256GB SSD is pretty pitful and probably too tight if you're using any "pro" apps so you'd need an odd workload to actually need 32GB RAM and 256GB storage (the storage is still far too mean, though).

M4 with 64gb ram? Intel or amd doesnt even have 32 with their base soc
Intel or AMD desktops top out at 256GB for non workstation level desktops.

Zen 5 laptops configured by HP, Lenovo offer 64GB RAM in various models.

Zen 4 Workstation level desktops/towers top out at 2TB RAM.

Zen 5 Workstations arrive in early 2025.

Zen 5 EPYC off 6 TB per MCM SoC.

Expect I know the answer to this, but I wonder if the MacBook Pros will also receive a baseline RAM bump (24GB maybe?), to maintain the differentiation between the consumer and pro lines? 🙏

A powerful computer, with an outstanding display, intended to be the hub of your digital world, appropriate for editing your photos, creating your digital video content, and the centerpiece of your computing experience across all your devices.

In what world is 256gb of storage appropriate for that? 512? Do I really have to pay double the cost of the base machine in order to simply have 2tb of storage?
1 TB max. So it’s not even possible.

Edit: Okay, now I see 2 TB is possible, but only with a 10-core CPU.

Glad they finally able to offer 32 GB RAM finally in a 24" IMac. Weird how they charge $200 more for each 8GB above 16 GB RAM?

The Big change from M3 to M4 is now it supports 4 TB4 ports. Before they could only be called (2) TB3/USB4 ports and (2) USB-C 3.1 ports. This now allows two external 6K displays to be connected instead on only 1. Note - iMac with 8‑core CPU supports one external display. iMac with 10‑core CPU supports up to two external displays
