Personally, I've been loving Beats1. I didn't think I would, because I was assuming it would be 100% pop music ... although I do like Ke$ha.

Turns out, I've not heard a single time that Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Beiber or Miley Cyrus played on B1. Yes, they do play lots of Rap/Hip-Hop and R&B. If you don't like those genres, then Ebro's show is probably not for you. Julie Adenuga (sp?) plays a nice mix of R&B and other stuff. I've discovered a few new songs through Julie and Ebro's shows. iTunes will get a few dollars from me the next time I buy a couple of songs.

To me, the best thing about Beats1 is that it's "human". I stopped listening to music on the radio because it was becoming a pop-fest with annoying DJs and overly-autotuned vocals. But just listening to playlists is very lonely and sterile. Beats1 has brought back a personal touch. Yeah, the DJs can be annoying when they talk over the music, but many times, they inject humor and conversation into the listening experience.

The other day, they had a show which played an entire live album of Bill Withers. I had never heard of this guy, but the album was very entertaining. And the DJ only spoke in between the track to intro the next song or add some interesting tidbit of information. I don't think I would have gotten that type of entertainment from any other source.

I think this replay feature is going to be pretty cool for me. I'll be able to listen to the shows that I miss because I'm asleep or at work or whatever.

Can't wait for Beats to expand their number of radio stations.

Agreed about human element, it's been a great part of the experience for me. It's refreshing to hear actual dj's playing what they like instead of the drones playing the corporate playlists for whatever format the station is that week.

The Bill Withers album was fantastic. I too hadn't heard of him, but that album is now in my library.

Yes, it is. Every time I try B1 it's hip hop/rap/whatever it is called. Maybe some electronica pumped in. But I think I've heard maybe 2 rock songs.

Just tried it again this AM and it was Ebro. 100% Rap/Hip Hop. Snoop, NWA, and someone else was all I could muster before I had to turn it off. Just popped over to it in iTunes. Same thing.

So, yeah if you like those forms of music, it's for you. If you like anything else it's not for you.

And you get to listen to all the annoying antics of radio (including crappy DJ's talking over your sings and making "funny" jokes) too.

I'll pass.

No - it categorically is not true.

There is plenty of stuff that gets played that is not rap or hip hop - even on Ebro's show which, to be fair, I would expect to be predominantly rap / hip hop.

That you keep hearing rap when you tune in, and presumably quickly switch off pretty quickly, does not change that fact.

Would it help if anyone posted actual playlists from actual shows if you don't believe me?

With something like this you get out of it what you put in - if you happen to be around when Ebro is on, and you only really hear a a bit of Ebro then sure - there's a good chance you'll hear some rap.

But if you take any time at all to look at the different shows available, and figure out which, if any, might be more of a mixed bag then you'll know to tune in to those if you like them enough.

Wow, surprised by these comments.

I read the article thinking 'hmm do people care? Do people use this??" and it seems many of you do.

Might have to give this a whirl

Yeah, every time I turn on Beats1, I hear mostly rap/hip-hop songs. Not into it though.
I've been using Apple Music a lot, but I have listened to Beats 1 a handful of times. I hate modern rap, but I myself haven't been displeased with the variety. I've heard a lot of good house music and drum n bass, which you can't find on any radio stations where I'm at in the U.S. Doubtful anywhere in the U.S.

How revolutionary.

Um, I don't think anyone said it was revolutionary.

What is it about Apple and "revolutionary" that means any time - gasp! - they ever do anything that isn't revolutionary, they can't do it without a sarcastic remark about not being revolutionary?

Maybe its just me, but I find the whole thing a bit odd.

If you're expecting anything and everything Apple ever do to be revolutionary, you might need to reign those expectations back in, or be sorely disappointed.

There are podcasts that are recorded versions of live shows (audio DVRs). I think there are EDM podcasts that are all music (Ninja Tune I think). So I would call these on-demand streams podcasts.

If they are live then I would have to consider them a regular "broadcast" instead of a podcast. I mean otherwise what's the difference ? What makes it a podcast ? that someone recorded the live show and uploaded it somewhere ? Everything gets recorded and uploaded nowadays so that definition would potentially make everything a podcast.

I think if there is ever a live version of something that's what makes it a broadcast. If the program is intended to always be pre-recorded and then uploaded then it's a podcast. Otherwise what would really be the main difference ?

and Ninja Tune is a record label so if they have a podcast they probably play their own music. Most podcasts dont play commercial music because of licensing issues.

I think Coverville is a podcast that is music centric and not a talk show podcast.

Yes, Coverville doesn't really play the same music as the radio though. They do covers hence the name. So they had to go through negotiations to get a unique licensing deal with all the major performance rights organizations. Fortunately due to the nature and difference in the music they play they were able to work it out. Though podcasts in general don't really play commercial music the way a radio station would due to licensing issues.

Most people listen to radio to discover new music. The music you "know of" already resides in your library.

Actually most people listen to radio to do both. Even so, I haven't even enjoyed a single song played on b1 yet.

This is why iTunes Radio was better - you can pick an artist you like, and it'll play songs based on your taste. And you can set the discovery mode to "Top Hits" or "Discovery".

The songs played were mostly music I enjoyed. However, b1 has just been a horrible experience of music. And I have a very wide range of musical taste.

Not finding a song you even know of on a music based radio station is total win for me, and the entire point. You can play songs you already know from your music library!

Hearing an underground minimal techno track at 1.30pm in the afternoon on a mainstream live music radio station is mindblowing - the BBC in the UK would have to have some crap chart music and an idiot who thinks he's trendy telling jokes for kids under the age of 16.

I agree, its nice discovering music but I have yet to hear anything I remotely would listen to for free or even consider purchasing into my own library.

Really, what kind of music do you like? I'm truly interested.

Dance, R&B, Rock, Hip Hop/Rap, Country, some Jazz and Alternative.

I've gone from international DJ's like Tiesto and David Guetta to regional artists like Kim Sozzi, Reina, etc. So I'm not stuck on top 40 hits or whatever.

Sounds like you have a broad range of musical taste. I'm wondering if Juile Adenuga's show would be for you?

I admit that I'm not that into music. I like what I like and not what I don't. I find that I like Julie's show. YMMV.

I will say that I haven't heard too much Guetta type DJ music, but then again, I'm not listening to every show.

I did and I agree, I actually like Beats 1 - heck I see they played Roxy Music 2 hours ago and I haven't heard them in ages!

My reply wasn't really aimed at you.

I know music is an incredibly subjective thing, so its almost impossible for any radio station to keep everyone happy. I guess being from the UK and familiar with Zane's R1 show, I had a fair idea of what to expect form his show at least.

But I've listened to quite a bit and enjoyed a lot of shows. I guess I don't expect to like every song played - its enough to know that the variety is there and that, from experience, I know there's a good chance I'll like enough, and discover new stuff.

I don't go out of my way to listen to Ebro, but I've listened to a bit and enjoyed him as a DJ - comes across with a healthy enthusiasm like Zane, although I guess "healthy enthusiasm" to some is "annoying loudmouth talking over all the music to others"! But he has played Chvrches who couldn't be further away from the stereotypical NYC stuff. And I like how he plays stuff sometimes just because another track has reminded him of another - with stuff like that it definitely comes across as the DJs having a greater say in the music played, rather than a playlist by committee.

i don't think so. I used to listen to radio when i had an old car with a basic CD player with no iphone/ipod integration. But now i always listen to what i want from my 160GB iPod. :)

So you don't like finding new music? If you only play what's on your iPod you won't expand your musical horizon. Being surprised by a new song is an absolute high for me. It doesn't have to be radio, but Sirius, Apple Music, Spotify are really great ways to find new and great music.

Just because a radio station makes shows available for people to listen to after broadcast does not mean "radio" has magically changed into a (presumably lesser) thing called a "podcast".

You might as well argue that "television" died the day they invented the VCR.

Fair, i've only listened to it for a few minutes, apart from the tracks already in my library I discovered Jon Hopkins and his fantastic track 'Open Eye Signal' i'd have never come across that, and it was on at like 1pm on a Wednesday! Madness.

I think that works for Radio 1 though - whilst the daytime stuff is predominantly chart orientated, quite a bit of stuff from the evening shows does spill over into the daytime shows. And that's probably a great way for kids who tune in for chart stuff get a bit of exposure to other stuff, get a taste for more music, and tune into the evening shows.

I remember basically going from the chart show > Annie Nightingale's Request Show > John Peel when I was in my teens.

Yeah fair, whatever leads them into something better - Its just great we haven't got to put up with any Chris Moyles type mainstream nonsense in the morning :D

I'm from the UK and I really really really dislike Julie Adenuga.. she's sister of rappers, plays lots of rap and also rnb.. we do need another DJs who's more in tune with the broader european style of modern music.

We should have Beats Berlin, Amsterdam, or Oslo.. it would rock !!!!!!!
