It doesn't surprise me, Apple own Beats and they have probably been working on new headphones for a while. I think it will go somthing like this:

Airpods/EarPods free in the box
New Beats wireless range sold alongside the iPhone 7. The wired Beats have been on sale here in the Uk for the last month or so, so it makes sense to do so before announcing a new range. I'm looking forward to it :) the event is going to be great :D:)

Agreed. I have a nice pair of Headphones with an interchangeable cable (low impedance model optimized for mobile devices) but I would consider it a royal pain in the rear having to change cables, depending if I use my MAC, iPhone or use the cans on an aircraft while traveling. It adds nothing but cost and inconvenience.

As you rightly pointed out about the DAC: as someone with a degree in physics I would cringe looking at a DAC-dongle/adapter knowing that my iPhone has a perfectly capable DAC sitting inside being bypassed.

It's even worse for anyone with a decent set of headphones, cause the DAC in the cheap adapter will be no where the quality of the current DAC in the iPhone 6, so we get worse audio quality.

Most people who use cheap or bundled headphones will never tell the differnce though

Just got myself a set of Bose Quietcomfort 35's in prep for the iphone 7. They sound SO good and the noise cancellation is immense. People claiming bluetooth audio is not up to scratch are just plain wrong

It's not about the iPhone people. It's about the watch. Removing the headphone jack moves the industry forward with headphones that also work with a standalone watch.

But the watch needs the iPhone..... Apple will not make the watch standalone, they don't want to loose the connection that forces the user to own both.

Are you suggesting the master plan is to move music onto the watch.....after apple has pushed Apple Music so hard?

Here is an idea. Use the QC 35s wired and wireless and get back to us.

We are not saying it's not upto scratch, we are saying that if you use the same headset, say your QC 35, wired and wireless, wired is superior. A QC35 wireless is leaps and leaps and bounds superior to bundled headphones....hence up to scratch....

Expect the rise of the Snake Oil sellers. Hundreds of different manufacturers will try to sell you a "premium" DAC Dongle for "improved" sound quality - and millions will fall for it. They are probably already opening champagne bottles in anticipation and thanking Apple that they have created a market.

In reality the DAC inside the phone is very good. In fact, over the last years technology has marched on and most DAC Chips offer great sound.

What is very important to sound is the amplification part. Those who care about that would have probably bought an external DAC/AMP Combo already or purchased a Headphone with low impedance, which manufacturers have been offering for a whole. Those are perfectly fine and work fantastic directly connected to the iPhone.

It's a stupid move. What's next? Removing the WiFi chip? After all, it's redundant. We have LTE [\S]

Beats headphones? No thanks. I made that mistake back in 2010 (Monster Beats). They turned out to be heavy, overpriced, mediocre sound-quality headphones.

To be fair they have got a lot better since then. I have a pair of the Bests Solo2 and they are great. If Apple announce a new wireless range alongside the iPhone 7, I will likely get a pair especially if they have been working on the Bluetooth chip that has been rumoured.

I can see the advantages of replacing the Lightning port with USB-C, and by not doing so Apple may have somewhat caused themselves a headache.
If they ship lightning headphones they're not going to be compatible with older iPhones/iPods (pre-lightning) or macs unless Apple also ships an adapter; which is a very clunky solution.
With the rMB shifting to USB-C and other macs likely to follow perhaps a USB-C iPhone would've made the most sense.
Aside from all the benefits of USB-C it could've been the perfect time for Apple to adopt a standard across most of their best-selling devices.
Maybe incorporating a lightning port in future macs would solve this issue as it could be used for lightning headphones and recharging the Apple Pencil and so on, especially if they develop from the patent they were granted to use the Apple Pencil with a new Magic Trackpad.
Wireless headphones are an option but the struggle of pairing and impairing from deceive to device is a real pain at the minute and doesn't yet seem the solution until it is simplified.
With the presence of the 3.5mm jack, lightning port and USB-C ports varying across so many devices, Apple surely is going to cause compatibility issues at some point if not imminently.

It isn't known what new Beats products Apple has in the works, but it seems likely the company will debut both new wireless headphones and Beats headphones that adopt Lightning connectors, as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will not have a headphone jack.
So, mediocre, overpriced, show-off headphones to go with a mediocre, overpriced, show-off phone.

Mediocre? there actually quite good, at least the Solo2 that I've got are. Show off? i don't see how they are show off headphones, how can headphones show off? Don't forget Beats was brought by Apple, so the new range may have been worked on by Apple, with improvements.

If Apple increases the Beats sound quality and reduces the price a little then I'd consider them. The ones I have listened to before were pretty ordinary quality

Mediocre, i.e. of moderate quality. Speaking of audio quality here, not assembly. I'd say they don't make the top half, as far as over-the-ear headphones go, in audio quality. And their prices are relatively high, for that money one can buy better sound quality. There's intense competition in the segment.

Show off, yes, as in they look in a particular way (I'd describe it as glitzy) that draws attention to the user. They have that hip-hop gangsta' vibe about them, in my opinion. I expect that showing them in public is about making a fashion or lifestyle statement, not about audio quality.

I don't expect an Apple rework to be less glitzy - Apple is into mediocre, overpriced fashion tech these days.

I've bee using Bose Soundlink 2 Bluetooth headphones for about 10 months and I love them. Does anyone own this and beats wireless. Is the sound better/same/worse compared to Bose?

Why am I not surprised? Removing the 3.5mm jack is just Tim's ploy to make more money off Beats. Guess "tax dodging/selling underpowered and outdated Macs/selling overpriced products/not updating or fixing things that need to be fixed and just adding more emoji to iMessage" isn't bringing in enough money.
best comment ever and so true!! hahahahaha

After trying a cheap pair of wireless headphones I can say with confidence that I am totally ready to cut the cord.

Just need ease of use, ease of charging and a decent sound!
yes and the battery life is going suck. and when it doesn't hold its charge anymore, you have to buy a new set of wireless headphones. just more $$ for Apple

I love mine too, but the bluetooth on thme is crapiest i have ever used. If my iPhone is in the side pocket of my pants and i'm going to the gym on my bicycle the sound is cutting off.
Not my experience and I use mine for the gym too

The truth hurts, doesn't it?

Not sure that's truth, pal. Sounds like you have come up with those reasons to make sense of your own theories. There will be new macs, new iPads, new iPhones, new beats. Just because you don't want to wait on the products to be announced doesn't mean they don't exist. Sure, sales are in decline because there are better products right around the corner. I wish they would hurry up and get these products out before they were ready for market so we can complain about how there's no quality control at Apple anymore. Note 7's are blowing up and you want apple to rush out new products

My 10 yr old only wanted them because wireless and rose gold. All Apple has going for them with this is a cute brand and marketing. They're simply giving them away with Macs right now as a cheap gimmick considering these things have so little cost.

I'm sure Lightning Beats are in the plans. This is the main reason Apple is going to an exclusive port. It's going to bite them. I don't consider this a wanted feature. Heck, I can't decide if it's a deal breaker yet. I do know there's no way I'm carrying an adapter around. If it was USB-C, I could stomach it only because everyone else may go that way as well.

What do people think Apple expect other manufacturers to do re: headphones? Because, the way I see it, there are 3 options:
  1. Move over to the lightning port and pay Apple licensing fees. I think this is essentially impossible.
  2. Also abandon the standard jack but in favour of wireless only. If the problems of wireless can be overcome, this seems viable.
  3. Stick with the standard jack so (some) consumers need to buy multiple pairs of headphones and/or adapters. Some might be fine with that, some might abandon their non-lightning equipment, some might refuse to buy lightning-only equipment.
It kinda seems that 3 wouldn't be good at all for Apple, and they pretty much have to hope everyone goes for 2. In which case, expect "wireless headphones are FANTASTIC" to be the key message next week.

Apple has seen it's 'custom' (sometimes proprietary, sometimes just developed in-house) ports replaced by 'more standard' ones in the past (original USB, Firewire -> Thunderbolt, for example) and I'm hoping the same will happen again. From what I've seen of the physical ports, Lightning does look a bit nicer than USB-C, but aside from that, few people other than Apple employees can really be backing the former over the latter.

Glad I went for the 6s. I don't listen to a lot of music on my iPhone through headphones these days but when I do the last thing I want to worry about is a dongle or some wireless headphones that I have to worry about charging. Thanks but no thanks!!!!!
also the wireless headphones will lose it's battery capacity. today it can hold 100% but 3 months later 90%, then it decreases dramatically after 6-8 months. a year later battery capacity is i guess around 50-70%. my wired Bose headphones will be at 100% because it has no battery. Some folks will say, they're just buy another $100-$150 wireless headphone when the battery dies. but my wired Bose for $150 i can use for 5-10 years easily. My cost is $150 vs some folks yearly $100-$150. At the end who's has more money in their pockets. Me of course, and you who has wireless headphone yearly replacements is Apple, lol.

People really like to slam Beats, but they actually are pretty good.

If you are not young, you have no street cred and don''t even understand why they became a success.

Too many people turned off by the garish design, the people behind it and again the image.

Same here, wires FTW as long as I can get them.
Annoying, and wires in the way sometimes, but one gets used to it.
Since I mostly listen to talk, no need for expensive HiFi.

Sometimes a $ 4 on sale is fine:) LOL.

I de-test anything with batteries and only use them when it can't be avoided.

Even my 2 trackpads used to annoy me with a fast battery use up rate.

So, I got Panasonic eneloops with an OPUS charger, problem solved.
Great product and worth every penny.

I have no interest in Beats (not all about the bass :)). But, I do love that rose gold! If I hadn't recently purchased the Bose Comfort 35, the color alone would make the over the ear headphones tempting.
