NO, but the implication here is that Apple provide arbitrary limits to control usage for some ulterior reason. Apple will do everything possible to give as much access to as many apps as possible. If they haven't, then there is a reason. Simple as that. Don't declare something "arbitrary" because you don't understand the reasoning.

There is a reason. Whether or not people consider it arbitrary, is another matter.

The fact that the restrictions can be removed, and can be done without adverse affect, is evidence against Apples decision to limit Folders.

They've made poor decisions in the past for aesthetic UI purposes, and there are many who would say that vertically scrolling folders (like Infinifolders) would be out of line with Apples UI to this point.

So, there's one reason. One that has nothing to do with performance.

One way or the other there is a reason. Maybe not performance, maybe just aesthetics. Can we please move on to the next whine.

Whatever day they release it

by the day they release official iOS4.2, every techie iThing user will have already installed iOS 4.2GM on their iDevice, so Apple can now take their time to release it : GM IPSWs are currently seeded over bittorrent all over the world... and with iTunes 10.1 out, it's easy as 123 to install.

Though, waiting forward for 4.2 to be officially available, so whiners can start whining about 4.3 / 5.0 coming late.

Good Times.

My first job out of college was developing software, and my boss was a guy who would come up with the most ridiculous and unlikely scenarios for using the product, and without fail, he would find bugs in the software and tell us to go back and fix them. When we protested, saying that no one in their right mind would ever use the software in that way, he'd always say, "if I can come up with something this absurd, you can be sure that someone else will think of it too." That's stuck with me to this day.

Those folks have been waiting for folders, "multitasking", and all of the other iOS 4 features for a while now. I'm sure they're anxious to get their hands on it.

As one of "those folks",I am eager and anxious. But Nobody, including me,has reason to be "steamed" until 12.01AM December first. To be upset because a RUMOR is not true is simply unfair and unrealistic.
But I'm dying to be able to use folders.

i think tmrw is the day!

i think tmrw is the day!

I don't think this will be for IOS - seems like something more mainstream - not everyone who goes onto the Apple website would be bothered about IOS.... probably the new streaming service thingy me bob?

So let's speculate:
itunes streaming?
AppleTV update with support for apps?
iOS update?

Steve Jobs goes to Microsoft?

All of the above?

If that is Apple's "standard" then it is not adhering to it. Visually a screen full of apps could in a folder. Now, if by "visually," you mean "can been seen in the folder w/o opening" that doesn't hold true either as you can only see 9 icons on the "outside" of the folder. Inside will hold 12, so a full folder will have 3 icons you can't see unless you open the folder.

So, it seems to mean Apple is being arbitrary. Also Apple could allow the icons to scale down as more icons were put in a folder, similar to the OS X dock. Let the user decide how many is too many, how small of an icon is too small.

It's pretty obvious what nelmat says is correct, it's about how many apps can fit on the screen at once visually so the animation can display as well.

It should be pretty evident, if you have both an iPad and iPhone why it is the way it is. Making the argument that the number is arbitrary is asinine. It's about screen real estate. Of course they could include more and have scroll within a folder. But we're not discussing what if's here. You asked why it is the way it is and there's your answer.

And if you're not happy with it, jailbreak. It's a simple solution to a simple question. No need to over-complicate things.

I would say that the release of 11/24 or 11/25 makes perfect sense but from a sales point of view. This would allow Apple to capitalize on the huge Black Friday shopping weekend. There are those that have held off making the initial purchase until 4.2 is released. Something new to show in the Apple stores this holiday weekend as well.

i think tmrw is the day!

I doubt it will be the new iOS 4.2 update because I connected my iPad to iTunes today and it told me there was no new updates and that it will check for updates again on the 22nd November. With that I am presuming that 22nd November could be the date we see iOS 4.2 released. However in saying that Apple always have surprises up their sleeves and tomorrow could be the day that the iPad becomes a multi-tasking baby.

YUP, I think your correct. (My first post here)

I'll be waiting

Well, I have been waiting for 4.2 (in order to experience Game Center and multitasking since my iPhone 3G has folders), but I'm starting to get just a little restless. If I were a developer and could get the GM build for myself, I wouldn't complain. But I'll give Apple credit that 4.2 is November's update. Until then, my friends, iOS 3.2.2 will continue to rule over our iPads ;)

I just hope it fixes the issues with the iPhone3G. I will be more than happy with my phone again as long as the issues it has are resolved. One I can deal with, but the other is just ridiculous and should have been caught before it was ever released in iOS4.1. I am looking to get a new iPhone 4 or 5, but this may be what makes the choice if I choose another phone. I need a phone that works all the time, and doesn't have touchscreen issues all day long, with no resolve. What happens when I get a new iPhone, and the same thing happens, and then I am stuck with another phone that is full of FAIL. I was happy with my phone until the update, and now since I added it, I have had nothing but problems out of the screen. I wish there was a way to go back to 3.0

That doesn't mean anything. Mine said it would check on the 18th and I already have the update!

VoIP app issue

Just received this email from Toktumi about my Line2 app.

Attention all Line2 iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users:

Please do not upgrade to iOS version 4.2.

If you upgrade to iOS 4.2 and you are running Line2 in the background, the ringer will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered. This affects Line2 as well as all other VoIP and social calling apps. (Note: If you do not use Line2 your Toktumi service will not be effected.)

Apple Developer Support is aware of this issue and has designated its status as 'severe'. However, as of the most recent iOS beta (GMSeed build), this issue is still not resolved. We apologize for this inconvenience and will update you as soon as we get more information from Apple.

Line2 will continue to work as normal with your current operating system. We strongly encourage you not to install iOS 4.2 until Apple fixes the upgrade issue. We will send out an email update as soon as it is safe to upgrade.

Sincerely,

The Toktumi/Line2 Team
