I think this is a case of too many rumors equaling a net gain of zero. It seems like almost all of the colors of the rainbow were covered but since the colors are spread out among the analysts, nobody really knows anything.

Seems more like a case of everyone throwing stuff against a wall and see what sticks. Whoever gets some or most of it right (maybe by sheer luck) will be labeled a genius or whatever.

I've pretty much discarded the majority of this article and will hold on until there's some continuity between predictions.

Trouble ahead. Consumers will choose the low cost iphone over the iphone 5s by a wide margin, just as they did with the ipad mini. Profits will decline. It would be ideal to see the iphone 6 come out at the same time as the low cost iphone. But that's not gonna happen. We're stuck with the 5s for another year. Apple needs to up their refresh cycle, and in a way that doesn't harm margins.

Good Thing

Good thing these are just some lame mockups. Can you image how crappy these would look in person. Horrible colors. They would have a hard time selling these.

Those colors are just...wrong , also that render looks cheap as hell but oh well....

The difference being that the ipad mini is 100% identical to a regular ipad minus the screen. I think people are too used to the high-end look/feel/experience with the iphone 5 to even consider switching to something less functional/refined.

Apple's rumored low cost iPhone is said to be targeted at emerging markets, carrying a price tag of approximately $350-$400 without subsidies. To facilitate a lower price tag, the phone is rumored to have a polycarbonate shell.

At this stage of the iPhone's lifespan and market saturation, "emerging markets" is code for Pre-K and Kindergarteners. :D

Yeah I really don't see the point of these rumor sites posting random mockups of future Apple products. There's a real reason why Jony Ive works for Apple and the people making these mockups don't.

And I'm really happy that's the case...

Cases

mostly iPhone 5/5S is going to be covered in cases what is the need for different color options?

but makes sense for polycarbonate iPhone though.

How about a Xenon flash? I just saw this (admittedly old) comparison, wow:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Camera_Nitty_Gritty-part_2.php

It's a two edged sword. A xenon flash does provide much brighter light and thus more power to stop the action and fill up the room but it cannot be used for video and too often a direct flash light just overexposes everything. A good example is the second photo in your link; while the action was stopped much cleaner with the xenon flash, look at the highlight blow outs and flare caused by the flash light.

Given how tight things are getting with the latest smartphone internals, I really doubt anybody will go for a xenon flash with the exception of specialized models such as the Nokia PureView Pro phones.

Sometimes I wonder why they even bother with these terrible renders. I mean we understand a visual is important but still.

A valid concern, except they are already selling cheaper iPhones in the iPhone 4 and 4S. This will replace one or both of them, and come with higher margins.

The availability of additional colors is certainly welcome and I would like to have a very nice looking red iPhone if one is offered.

OR people who have not yet bought into the iPhone echo system will now do so at the lower price point.

The iPad Mini is not a good comparison as those folks who skipped the iPad 4 and got a Mini instead either didn't have an iPad to start with OR already had an prior iPad and saw no reason to upgrade in the same form factor.

Apple does not need to increase its refresh cycle. Its already almost too fast. If anything they should slow down a bit and look at enticing upgrade buyers instead of fresh blood, which is what was driving those initial booms.

By fresh blood I mean people who did not already own an iOS device in that category. Example iPods: My iPod 3rd Gen is now feeling its age very much. The release timing on the iPod 5th Gen was about spot on... if I had the budget at the time. Which is a point. Apple is doing stupidly good in an world economy that is still putting itself back together very slowly. Eventually that fact was going to catch up with them, it is crazy that it hasn't happened before now.

I don't know about these multi-color rumors. Let's assume that there are 5 colors and 3 carriers (obviously there are more):

  • Verizon 16 GB Color 1
  • Verizon 16 GB Color 2
  • Verizon 16 GB Color 3
  • Verizon 16 GB Color 4
  • Verizon 16 GB Color 5
  • Verizon 32 GB Color 1
  • Verizon 32 GB Color 2
  • Verizon 32 GB Color 3
  • Verizon 32 GB Color 4
  • Verizon 32 GB Color 5
  • Verizon 64 GB Color 1
  • Verizon 64 GB Color 2
  • Verizon 64 GB Color 3
  • Verizon 64 GB Color 4

  • AT&T 32 GB Color 2
  • AT&T 32 GB Color 3
  • AT&T 32 GB Color 4
  • AT&T 32 GB Color 5

  • Sprint 16 GB Color 1
  • Sprint 16 GB Color 2

Am I the only one that sees the logistical nightmare that stocking and selling this many SKUs would present?

I'm just not convinced that that they are going to shoehorn themselves into this kind of headache when 3rd party cases available today already address the problem of personalization via color.

I don't understand the hate towards Apple designers for these colors - the photo is clearly a mockup of colors chosen by the website, NOT the actual colors created by Apple. Are people really that gullible that they believe anything that's shown to them?
