About 6 months ago I interviewed with Apple and when asked what the worst design decision was the Apple made, I mentioned the redesign from first gen to second gen iPhone. I can grip the sides of the original iPhone and can slap egrips onto the edges to make it even easier. However, the second gen iPhone is shaped like a used bar of soap, has no edge to grip, and hence no place for egrips. I returned mine for a refund after I dropped it a dozen times when I got it home from the at&t store.

I told them that they either need to put an edge back onto it or use that rubbery grippy material that Blackberry has on some of their phones. Perhaps the matte finish is that material?

My sentiments exactly! Holding both right now side by side, there is just something about the 3G's curvature and increased dimensions that makes it much less comfortable to hold. Hopefully the Matte 3G will feel as solid as my 1st gen.

so, did you get the job?

IMO, Apple should just go back to making the backing out of brushed aluminum. Similar to the iPod classics/nanos. Al FTW!!!:D

I wish they would make the backs of the iPod classic and touch brushed aluminum, like the first generation iPhone. I hate how ugly iPods look after a month.

It looks like they just photoshopped the pictures of the supposed matte finish and a ****ers rock ants attention for their amazing skills at photoshop and macrumors is picking ithell drdtrtr **** cock ething newsworthy. Will June 8th be here already?

What???!!

Does it really matter what the finish of the back looks like when most people use some kind of a protective case anyway?

I've got a Gelaskin on the back of mine now. Haven't seen the back of the phone since I got it. ;)

...as someone who is getting their broken iPhone (1st Gen) back Monday from the slick case sliding out of my hand, I can hardly wait.

Bull Rog

It may be a trick of optics but...the dang iPhone (16Gb?) has crooked branding.

I'm all for the matte, or at least something less smooth than the 3G. The one thing I can't stand about my iPhone is my fear of death about dropping the stupid thing, which I've done at least 4-5 times because it slips right out of my hand. I can't stand that. I would much prefer a surface that is less slippery especially when I'm pulling it out of my pocket or jacket and forget about even touching it outdoors with gloves on in the winter!

It's not just you, it's me too. Maybe it's the lighting that's making the 3G look fat, but I sure do hope the new one is thinner, even if it's .5 mm thinner. :p

I see it too. I hope it is both thinner and less wide, like the original iphone's width. With that width, there was hardly any screen bezel on the sides... I liked how that looked.

Not going to happen. There has to be at least some plastic for the cell signal to get through, and while I like the aluminum back of the original, I also like a nice uniform look.

I really like the matte look. It might could use a little refinement (and it's not like it's the greatest picture anyway), but I definitely like it. I'll be honest, the glossy back of the 3Gs always seemed to have a cheapish look/feel to me. If they fix anything though I hope they fix how wide the bezel is on the sides of the screen on the 3G. I like how much closer it is on the original.

I would rather it stay the same dimensions and get better battery life, than have a thinner, shorter and more narrow new phone with the same battery life. But hey, I'm still hoping for an OLED screen even when I know better.

You misunderstood. He wants the back of the iPod classic to be blushed alu. I think it's a good idea.

*drools over unibody iPod classic*
