I just got an apartment :) but now I wont be able to get the new iPhone. :( Oh well, I'll wait for the 2010 iPhone that can pay my gas and electric bills. Also it can make toast.

2010 iPhone is gunna be awwwesome.

On topic: The matte finish is a step in the right direction. No we just need to see how well it does with finger oils and scratches.

Not a fan of the matte black at all. It cheapens the look of the phone badly. If I want my phone to look like a Fisher Price toy - I will buy one at Toys R Us. I don't spend $300 bux to have my phone look like a POS. I have a SHINY 3G phone with NO scratches. I had no case for mine for about 3 months. No issues at all. I have it in a case now.
Let me share with you what MATTE BLACK/Rubberized plastic looks like after a while, this is 5 months of use. I don't care who does the matte/rubberized plastic (Apple included), it will always look like this after a while.

I surely prefer this instead of CRACKS in the casing. I mean, you are using it daily..you can at least expect that it will look USED after some time. That's not a bad thing. And most of you will replace it after a year or two anyways.

Afterall it's just a phone. I'll buy it because of the software! But I really prefer the new casing if it's legit.

What if they do this:

8GB Glossy-only Black ($199)
16GB Glossy or Matte Black ($299)
32GB Matte-only Black ($399)
64GB Gold-plated ($999)

I personally think some of it could become true... Here's my guess.

8GB Matty? - Only Black ($99)
16GB Matty Black or White (glossy on white?) ($199)
32GB --same as 16GB-- ($299)

pal :)

Well now ... since Apple seems to be in a Matte kind of mood lately ... how about extending that Matte love to the MacBook displays, hmmmmm?

:p

Every Apple product delivered in the last five years has had some sort of sheen or gloss to it.

And what about the current nano lineup? Even though they're aluminum, they've got a matte finish on them.

Uninformed opinions...

Matte all the way. That gossy trash surface would probably scratch so easily.
Ya glossy might look cool for the first week but after it is scratched it will be very unattractive.

It's so annoying when people talk about something they know nothing about... Yes I know what you're going to say, 90% of the comments here...

I've had a black 3G for almost a year now, never had a case for it, not particularly careful with it, dropped it a couple of times. Shove it in my pocket, throw it in a bag. The only scratches (very faint) are on the chrome apple.

When you look at the back of the 3G the only thing you see is the apple, nice and clean. On the matt one there's too much lettering at the bottom.

I like the matte, but I don't like how much the white text stands out (particularly the FCC symbols, etc.). There is text on the 3G but it isn't visible from much of a distance, this appears that it would be. I think it looks pretty tacky and doesn't seem like something Apple would deem acceptable.

I guess this has already been said, but I didn't feel like reading the entire thread.

The way I see it, handheld consumer electronics - phones, iPods etc, are made to be used. Keeping something in a case and polishing it up every day? Great, if that floats your boat, but it's a little weird. Just use the damn thing. The only justification I could think of would be resale value, but nobody buys these things as an investment, and it's not worth the stress of babying it all the time.

Love my original iPhone, it's battered as hell, dented, scratched, but it's so rugged it keeps on going and still, IMO, looks amazing. I think the 3G looks cheap/tacky. I reckon the matte is a step in the right direction compared to the 3G look in terms of sophistication, although I'm not keen on the white text.

It seems the camera hole is filled, in which case this is shorter and somewhat thinner. Hope it's got a bigger screen and OLED...

this looks good! the matte will definitely be more practical for the iphone. really wish they would bring the aluminum back, i dont like plastic.

Matte is the way to go

I bought a case from Incipio that is matte and I like it better. It has better grip and it doesn't scratch. Now to get apple to make the silver lining scratch proof...

love the matte look. the gloss black just looks cheap crap plastic (which it apparently is.. with all the crack problems people are having)

now it matches the imacs a little more.. glass front, matte black back...

i wish all the text was either a gloss black or medium gray so it didn't stand out so much. maybe even the apple logo
