Can't wait to get lost in my new $400k Ferrari while using apple maps. Until Apple admits their maps app sucks and goes back to Google, than they will just be seen as arrogant. And with no offline mode for apple maps, it's useless if you lost service.

You clearly have such a spot on grasp on all the inner workings of how Maps work, as well as the quality of the data. Bravo, sir.

Quote from Bruce Tognazzini: "Meanwhile, Google Maps has had a roadway literally running right through the middle of my living room since 2005, and no one has felt the need to send headlines screaming around the world about it. (Apple Maps, on Day One, moved that roadway off to the side of our property where it belongs. I can’t tell you what a relief it has been to my wife and myself having reduced traffic passing between us and the telly these last months, with only Android users continuing to rumble past."

Ha! Thanks for prompting my iPad to take an impromptu shower! Post of the day, my friend.

Obviously this is an unfinished video - I suspect that Mercedes didn't intend for this to be released to the public. Anyways, that aside, I take issue with the way text messages are handled. Siri dictation rarely works reliably enough to inspire confidence that what you are saying is what will get sent.

I can see this being the source of many a misunderstanding. Even in this video, you're not sure if Siri is sending "I won't be home until eight" or "I won't be home until late". I can foresee far worse things than this, though... being unable to see the messages you are sending (or receiving) will surely be frustrating, resulting in people pulling out their phones while driving in a fit of annoyance to just manually type the message in.

I guess we shall see how this pans out.

Well, Siri reads back to you before sending.

This could be a major problem. I would not ditch my built in navigation unit for one that has to be connected to the internet at all times.

I could be wrong, but I thought that there was some pre-fetching of data. Obviously an issue if you are going through a long patch of dead zone.

Really? Ferrari one of the few launch partners? I know rich people probably buy iPhones too, but, I doubt Ferrari buyers make up the bulk of their install base.

Oh good lord people! The video is not meant as a real-life casual use of the feature. It's meant to show how it works, for the media. Which is why they show everything several times, so media can then edit their version. And the video actually shows how it works. It's not meant to depict real-life situation.

Sheesh!

Seems added and unnecessary. Integrate the thing, but don't just attach an iPad.

"Attach an iPad", what on earth are you blathering about? The screen in the Mercedes? That's a standard feature of the car, and not part of Carplay.

I honestly don't get the whining. In-car software is usually horrid. It's outdated by the time the car ships and is usually not updated. Offloading that to the smartphone is a good idea, since those are in fact regularly updated and those companies actually know something about software.

Wow, they actually made the the monitor stick out like E.T. smack dab in the middle rather than nicely integrated. It ranks up there with 2002 BMW 7 Series' hideous tail bump trunk lid.

I actually like it a lot. It's a daring design that makes the screen look like it's floating. A C-Class reviewer also noted how much more ergonomic it is because it sits more eye level.

One thing's for sure, love it or hate it, it stands out from the crowd and I applaud Mercedes for pushing the envelope.

Apple has promised new CarPlay-compatible vehicles from a number of manufacturers in 2014, including Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, with a dozen other manufacturers signed on as partners with unspecified launch time frames.
This is cool, really slick, looking forward to it, in about ten years.
Unfortunately, that's the next time I'll be in the market for a new car. I treat my cars like my Macs: I tend to keep them until they are worn out.

Are people not reading the article?

It's an unedited B-Roll of footage that is meant to be edited together later on.

It says so, you know, in the article.

Wanna get back to talking about CarPlay and its features now?

They couldn't think of a better way to integrate a screen than to go the mid 2000's route Garmin style and just stick it on the dash? Looks cheap. The need to go take a look at a Tesla.

Professionals don't release unedited broll.

Just in case you missed it, he gets in the car. And in case you missed the next part, he plugs in his phone. Did we just get every shot they took for this video?

Yeah. It was probably done by some outside ad agency. It was not in typical MB style.

What's worse is that it looks like some cheap Android tablet, not even a real iPad.

They and a lot of other european auto makers use Harmon as their hardware mfg of choice for their navigation/audio systems. oh well.

Volvo was clearly trying harder. I think MB gave the video project to a summer intern.

It's probably something they give their sales reps as some training video.

You know what is actually horrid? Apple Maps

Yep and another member that does not have the slightest idea! This Samsung feature was one of their worst flops.

We all know BB bought qnx, but they have yet to do anything worth while with it!

It's not who comes out with it first as much as it is better. If one is better because it works more intuitively, then it has a better chance for success.

Guess what? Those are actually improved. With cars, what you see is what you get. For all eternity.

And while it's fashionable to bash Apple Maps, they are not that bad in the end. But I guess the bandwagon is just so comfy, right?

Gives new meaning to "computers for the rest of us". The 1% needs toys for their aimless lives, too.

What's the big deal about this? I can do pretty much everything this dude does with Siri Eyes Free in my Lexus. The only thing missing is Apple Maps in the Lexus display, but turn-by-turn works fine through the iPhone while I get the Navi map from Lexus updating my position. On top of that, it's all over bluetooth without plugging in. So I don't see why this gets hyped so much.

If you already have Siri eyes free, this is a nice bump up from that but probably not a huge deal. But for the rest of us living in the dark ages with our crappy car systems (including my 2 year not so old Benz), it's a HUGE step up. Having apple apps replace everything and accessible right from my car's display will make my driving life infinitely easier, and 3rd party apps (in the future?) will just be a bonus. I would love to watch videos, while I'm parked and waiting, for example.

Clunker

I don't understand the concept. So you take your mobile device with a screen, plug it into another, slightly larger screen, and then use voice commands that don't require a screen.

??

The car should plug into the mobile device (preferably over Bluetooth), not the mobile device into the car.

CarPlay is to cars what iTunes was to phones...
