50% of the time, his eyes were looking at the screen, and not out the windshield. It's gonna be awesome driving when everyone has these!

I think that's why I shall invent the iOS HUD! This would project not only on a spot where the driver can see, but that would also make the entire windshield a touchscreen that the passenger can also enjoy.

Can't wait to get lost in my new $400k Ferrari while using apple maps. Until Apple admits their maps app sucks and goes back to Google, than they will just be seen as arrogant. And with no offline mode for apple maps, it's useless if you lost service.

Quote from Bruce Tognazzini: "Meanwhile, Google Maps has had a roadway literally running right through the middle of my living room since 2005, and no one has felt the need to send headlines screaming around the world about it. (Apple Maps, on Day One, moved that roadway off to the side of our property where it belongs. I can’t tell you what a relief it has been to my wife and myself having reduced traffic passing between us and the telly these last months, with only Android users continuing to rumble past."

This is painful to watch. And not only the video, but the performance of the software they're demoing. Looks slow and choppy.

I just bought a new car and I'll say that I'm happy to have done so. If I'm lucky, this whole CarPlay thing will ripen in time for my next auto purchase... that is, 5 or 6 years from now.

How do you really feel about Apple maps again?

That Mercedes video is bizarre. I felt like I was watching a guy with obsessive-compulsive disorder who has to do everything four or five times.

If I were in the market for a Mercedes, I'd wait until the next iteration of this technology before plunking down 75k+. That screen looks like they took an iPad Mini and superglued it to the dash. It totally looks out of place.

Just read some of the Engadget comments haha - they really do hate Apple over there.

I read at least 10 which says "Why would you put this in a Ferrari, its ruined it with Apples CHILDISH colours, dated and ugly"

Why does the video have to show everything in detail like that? Such as a man getting into a car?

I assume this was edited as a B-Roll type thing for the press to edit into an item as desired.

ha HA
I played it with no volume and the whole time i thought that i could have found the right place on google maps and been on my way in less than half the time he spent talking to his car

Obviously this is an unfinished video - I suspect that Mercedes didn't intend for this to be released to the public. Anyways, that aside, I take issue with the way text messages are handled. Siri dictation rarely works reliably enough to inspire confidence that what you are saying is what will get sent.

I can see this being the source of many a misunderstanding. Even in this video, you're not sure if Siri is sending "I won't be home until eight" or "I won't be home until late". I can foresee far worse things than this, though... being unable to see the messages you are sending (or receiving) will surely be frustrating, resulting in people pulling out their phones while driving in a fit of annoyance to just manually type the message in.

I guess we shall see how this pans out.

Again we are reminded of why Apple is reluctant to take on partners. Why does MB need to release a edit-it-yourself version of the video? If you're not paying attention, it looks like he has to keep repeating himself to Siri. And you know some PR are too lazy to pick their favorite angles so they will release the video as is.

I've always been amazed at how good and often Siri gets it right. What bothers me is this demo is in a perfect vacuum. Why not do the demo on a real road while driving? It feels too demo polished and not realistic.

Sorry but Apple Maps usage has been rising steadily. It's always better for me than Google Maps for driving directions and it looks better too. The only time I pull out Google Maps is when I want to enter a retail name directly into the search bar. That usually yields better/more results than Apple Maps.

If there's any reason why Apple should be making their own car, that ad was it.

I don't see where this is going to be a big seller. Most of the people I know that have this navigation stuff in their cars never use it. As far as making calls and leaving messages, well hell I can do that in my cheap Sonata that's three years old. It has its own form of Siri. The radio and play list are accessed from the steering wheel. I must be missing something.

creepy eyes

What does he keep looking at out the windshield? Is he pretending to paying attention to the road?

Seems unreliable, having to plug the iPhone in like that, over and over! It's like he had to do everything 3 times to get it to work.

And poor Michelle Schmidt ... her husband/boyfriend is kind of a dick. Why didn't he just call her? Do we really live in an age so impersonal that we need to dictate text messages (3 times) using voice, instead of making an actual old-fashioned call?

Guys. This Mercedes video is a raw marketing video! Everything is filmed from three angles and has no audio track. This is normal. It is used to cut together actual marketing videos. No idea how this got into the public ...
