Some Pros need an Intel Mac still. I need one just to use Docker to deploy to AWS Intel based instances. Virtualization doesn't work.

That ship is sailing fast. I suggest you do what I've done: "old fashioned bootcamp" with a dedicated PC. You can get great ones in even Mac Mini-sized cases, generally for about half of the budget of a good Mac. If you need a "loaded" PC, shop around many choices for RAM and SSD with prices driven down by competitive forces... like we used to be able to do with our Macs.

If you go this way, consider a monitor with inputs for both Mac and PC, so you have the easy flexibility to use one monitor with both. I went with a 5K ultra wide with 4 video inputs. Mac Studio into one, PC into another and 2 still free for anything else. The ultra-wide can split screen for Mac on half and PC on the other half at the same time (think Parallels-like minus the annual subscription renewal). It has a built-in hub so it can share a keyboard and mouse too.

Else, hang on to an Intel Mac for as long as you can because the days of that great flexility of 2 whole computers in one box are numbered. I'm doubting "the most powerful Mac" can stay with Intel even if that may make the most tech sense given rumors about the hypothetical Extreme chip. Once it switches, the clock for macOS support of Intel Macs will be ticking fast... as will Rosetta 2.

They're revamping the Mac Pro for a completely replaceable upgrade system probably starting with the M3 and that made the M2 Studio show up quicker as it won't be killing the Mac Pro.

Which is absolutely the smartest way to go. It was a hard lesson learned "Release no Mac Pro before its time, and it had better be completely upgradeable in every way." Ram, processor, everything.

But that Mac Pro would truly be a game changer.

Me reading this article:

"FINALLY, waited long enough... wait why would the headset be running two M2 chips then if M2 Ult- ohhhhhhh"

The point of that was we might actually have a 180 and see the Headset/Reality Pro running an M2 Ultra chip? Or some pro chip? Because to me, two M2 chips taped together doesn't very Apple-ey and not very efficient. Why not just give it pro chips? Isn't this kind of device (a device with lots of intensive computing tasks, especially if Final Cut would be on this thing like it's rumored to eventually) what pro chips are made for?

I'd like to see desktop iPadOS devices introduced to continue the drive away from macOS. Now we have powerful tools and best-ever versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro on iPadOS, it's time to go harder and faster in pursuit of the future.

Not going to happen. macOS is slowly inching towards a touch-friendly design, but will never be retired. There's far more to software than graphical touch-based applications. For example, as a web applications developer, I install tons of software via the command-line interface. This would be possible on iOS/iPadOS, too, but I don't see Apple giving that their full blessing for several years at least. They prefer to keep iOS locked down and all software installations channeled through the App Store.

Do iOS/iPadOS have UNIX certification like macOS does? They don't appear on this list:

An M3 would be nice, but I really want to see what they do with the M4. Or should I wait until the M5? I bet the M6 will be super exciting.…

This is silly, I’m switching to Samsung. They are already on M8
Makes sense since Samsung is more reputable than Apple 🤣

You really think a student buying a $499 Mac mini (actually, $697 since they'll need a mouse and keyboard for it) is going to drop $1499 on the Studio display? It would make sense to offer a reasonably priced display for those type of buyers.
Completely agree. A 24 inch 4.5K (same panel as the iMac) for $799-$999 would be great. $1500 for a 60hz LED is pretty disappointing imo

Exactly what I’ve posted in other threads. The monitor costs 3 times more than the (mighty) Mac. How does that make any sense?

Or Apple could scrap it altogether
That too, a lot of the discussion is around it being a halo product, the best of what the Mac can be. But to be honest, even in Windows PC environments, towers are an exceptionally rare sight these days. Windows workstations themselves are being replaced by small form factor devices which would be the Mac Studio on the Apple side. Again, not saying there isn't a market, but is justifiable for Apple to pursue in volume? Especially when so much of the target audience is already tied up in a Linux/Windows ecosystem. The hardware, software tools (much of proprietary) is optimized for Windows and Linux.

I’d just like to conveniently note Apple’s self-proclaimed “two-year transition” is in its fourth calendar year, and likely to go into its fifth if Mac Pro won’t get M2.
And how about the list of apps that still haven’t got around to “flip one switch in the compiler and recompile for silicon.” That must be one heavy switch.

Perhaps we could use the cash we saved on the “cheaper Macs because Apple would no longer be paying the Intel premium“ to buy some levers to help lift that switch? 😉

They are going to need something spicy to be able to power the VR in a hitherto undisclosed tethered mode. There’s just no way they can power pro graphics intensive apps through a 4Kx2 HMD without a tether (wireless or wired).

What is running on your instances? Can't you just install the native Mac/ARM64 versions of the same software? Pretty much anything *nix-based on available equally for `x64`, `amd` and `arm64` architectures.
