They are going to need something spicy to be able to power the VR in a hitherto undisclosed tethered mode. There’s just no way they can power pro graphics intensive apps through a 4Kx2 HMD without a tether (wireless or wired).

I love comments like this. Hasn't Apple already delivered unprecedented performance from a tiny package? Wait to be blown away! 🤣

Best-in-class doesn't mean people want it or will pay for it. Imagine if the only cars you could get in the world were super cars...
As has been repeated numerous times, Apple does not aim for the low end. There will never be an Apple Display that is considered low priced or good enough. There are literally hundreds of third party displays out there. If you want one with the Apple logo you will pay for it.

I wish. ;)

Pros are going to want a new Mac Pro to have slots for graphics cards and storage options, as well as memory options. I don't know you do that with an Apple Silicon SOC and maintain performance.

gonna be an instant buy after release. such a compact yet insanely powerful package!!!!

The Mac Studio with M1 Max is already a killer machine. A Mac Studio with M2 Max won’t be to entice current M1 Max owners to upgrade, but to entice current non-owners to take the plunge. The Mac Studio M2 Max will again be a killer machine in its own right even if it isn’t a big upgrade over the M1 Max.

I’m curious to see what an M2 Max Mac Studio will be like even though I’m waiting for an M3 iMac.

I suspect the Mac Pro has been delayed again. Like I concluded in a previous post, Apple started rebuilding the Apple Silicon Mac Pro to be expandable back in 2021 and it’s proving more difficult than they originally planned.
I agree. It would be odd for Apple to release an M2 Ultra Mac Pro that doesn’t really provide any functionality over a Studio. It appears the Studio is getting an update instead.

It’s possible the Mac Pro could still be updated this year as an Intel refresh with AMD W7800X & W7900X graphics.

Not like any of us were thinking...
  • Mac14,8 = M2 Ultra Mac Pro
  • Mac14,13 = M2 Max Mac Studio
  • Mac14,14 = M2 Ultra Mac Studio
...when these ID codes first showed up...

Gurman is all over the place, just throwing stuff at the wall to see what might stick...

Me, I would hope Apple previews M3 Ultra / M3 Extreme Mac Pros at WWDC 2023, with release for Fall 2023...

With add-in ASi (GP)GPU(s) & hardware ray-tracing...! ;^p

Some Pros need an Intel Mac still. I need one just to use Docker to deploy to AWS Intel based instances. Virtualization doesn't work.
This kind of workflow shouldn't be tied to a specific CPU architecture to begin with. ARM is going to supplant x86 eventually. Including server-side.

Sure, but when NVIDIAs flagship desktop GPU struggles to power high end VR apps with 650 watts of power, the unprecedented performance you speak of just isn’t feasible in a significantly smaller form factor…you’re basically arguing Apple could take over the GPU market overnight, but it chooses not to.

Bu…bu…but some people said M2 was too old. There was no doubt M3 would appear at WWDC.
I guess they didn’t take into account that, in the ENTIRE world, there’s only somewhere between 20 and 30 million M2 Macs out there. Considering there’s 8 billion folks in the world, an M3 would not be considered old to the majority of folks looking to buy a computer.

Even M2 series aren't even close to RTX 40 series which is a joke. I dont think M2 Ultra can even come close to RTX 3090.

M3 and its progeny on 3nm will likely have higher single core performance. I’ll patiently wait and won’t fall for any m2 shenanigans.

Exactly. Too many people seem to think Apple should be transitioning from high-end quality to low-end junk. If you want Samsung prices, buy Samsung.

Agreed. Besides it isn’t “super car” analogy friendly, super cars are made in the tens of thousands, some even in the hundreds…
This is more akin to a Corvette C8, mid-engine super car-like but that for all purposes, conveniences and power still found a way to be mass produced and affordable-ish.

You really think a student buying a $499 Mac mini (actually, $697 since they'll need a mouse and keyboard for it) is going to drop $1499 on the Studio display? It would make sense to offer a reasonably priced display for those type of buyers.

I suspect many of those buyers are going for ~$200 display which is good enough for their needs. To compete, Apple would need to make compromises that would turn off Apple's customers, so why not sell the a powerful machine and let them decide what display to buy based on price?

Look at Apple's mouse and keyboard - you can get very good mice and keyboard for a lot less, but they are low margin/high volume devices that are aimed at PC buyers and thus a manufacturer can compete on price given he expected volumes. Apple's volumes make competing with them unadvisable ; especially since such devices likely would impact sales of Apple's higher margin offerings.

Trying to compete with low margin inexpensive displays isn't Apple's strategy, so not having one makes sense. Apple's displays are for people who need heir features and are willing to pay the going rate.
