iPhone 4G (allegedly)

So, you find what might possibly be the next gen iPhone on the floor in a bar.
You take it home, photograph it and post the pictures on the net.

Yet somehow you don't bother to photo it switched on? And you don't video it? You've got that damn thing in your hand after all! It's not like you've :apple: security beating down your door!

Yeah, we all long for the new hardware features. But show me proof.

I cry "fake", till proved otherwise.

Whaat?

that thing is hideous and cheap. That is probably just one of those fake proto types, but its NOT apple. Apple would never make anything that looked like that. There is no way that will be the announced 4G iPhone. I know apple design well :apple:

I might get mocked for this, but I like the basic design of this. If this is the prototype, with non-final seams and buttons, I would definitely buy the cleaned-up version. I'm not sure why some people are so ticked off about this -- I think this flat, aluminum edge looks pretty classy and the iPhone is due for a new look.

Also, for the hackers, I imagine a design like this might be a tiny bit easier to open up. I'm sure that's a secondary effect of course, and not Apple's intent.

The guy who said the pictures that engadget posted was an iphone clone from china is lying, look at the other photos he took, he clearly photoshopped them from a 3gs...

What do you think?

You can easily see on the third pic how the curved edges of the 3gs have been made to look like this new one from the leaked pics. Look at his thumb on first pic, looks well photoshopped. Makes me think the origional pics are actually genuine!

Why are the icons so big and close together. They also look like they run right off the top of the screen. I think that's a knock-off phone.

Mark-My-Words.... There is no way apple would every release a product that looked like that. This is a prototype. The next iphone will be slimmer and sleeker than the 3GS. That thing is a F*ckin' Brick! The fact that this might actually be the new version boggles my mind...

It's really hard to ignore the evidence from the iPad leaked image. :(

When I first saw this, I got excited because it was metal, but after seeing all of the images, it looks really dumb. So many seams and raised edges? Really? It looks like it could cut into your hand while holding it! It definitely does not look like an Apple product. Even one of the images doesn't even have an Apple logo on it.

I dunno... I really hope that these leaked images are not the real 4th gen iPhone.

Fake Image

The image is 100% fake. It shows the camera on the left side of the phone. It however should be on the right side because it's a mirror image!!! Right?

Gizmodo has a hands on of the purported device. Including brand new videos and images.

http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Wow, this explains why Gizmodo was so quiet about this all weekend. They scooped the story right out from under Engadget.

I know, I feel kind of bad for Engadget. But Joshua Topolsky might have more details.

I want to know how much Gizmodo had to pay for it! :)

That is the down side of AOL owning engadget, they arnt willing to make the kind of shady deals Gawker is! :)

This rumor may have been the most rapidly developing story in a while. Gizmodo really went to town on this one. I'm impressed.

Wow there more denial here than at an OJ trial :D

Its the new iPhone. People have to come to terms with it.

I personally think its looks pretty good. Nice change. The two cameras and the higher res screen are both a plus for me.

Just read through Gizmodo's article and looked at all of the pictures and have to say that I personally love the design. Definitely going to be thinking of picking the new iPhone up.

I thought it looked cheesy at first but after seeing the high res photos, I'm convinced that this is real and I'll probably get one.

By the way... I knew Apple would be using a high res screen in this iPhone even before this leak, just based on the fact that Apple re-designed all of the icons in OS 4. They redesigned them because they needed them to be high res enough for the new screen (like they are on the iPad).

Um, no - you're as wrong as wrong can be. And cmaier knows what the f**k he's talking about. Making a phone isn't a trade secret.

Apple can claim it is their property, but it was hardly stolen. Any legal liability lies with the employee who screwed up.

I would not be shocked if Engadget is on the phone with attorneys to see what the repercussions would be to tearing it apart. It isn't stolen, but it's hard to say that they "didn't know" it was Apple property.

Definition of a trade secret: "A trade secret, as defined under 18 U.S.C. § 1839(3) (A), (B) (1996), has three parts: (1) information; (2) reasonable measures taken to protect the information; and (3) which derives independent economic value from not being publicly known." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_secret#cite_note-0)

- Details about Apple's next iPhone are without a doubt a trade secrets
- Violation of trade secret related laws is precisely what Apple sued Think Secret for, not copyright or trademark infringement
- You can get sued for revealing trade secrets even if you didn't obtain them illicitly. So if an Apple employee call you and gives you details about the iPhone without you asking him anything, and you then publish that information, you are liable. The only question would be around knowledge about whether you knew that those were trade secrets. In Engadget's case, they obviously know.
- Engadget obviously didn't "steal" the iPhone, but they might have "incented" someone to give them the phone. That would be the misappropriation if true. I have no proof for this, I just find the bar story odd.

Again, I don't think Apple will go after them, but if that is indeed the next iPhone, Engadget is liable.

It seems like the iPhone that is placed on top of the iPad prototype, has the '3GS' case, the same one that was found disguising the iPhone found in that bar. On both you can see the front facing camera to the left of the ear-peice.
