So you're saying they shouldn't even try? I didn't say they will, I said you can bet they are trying.

Anyways.... cmaier deserves one of these for these two threads:

I don't want to be nitpicky, but I didn't say they shouldn't try to obtain the device. Also, your initial post said nothing about trying either, just them asking their lawyers what the repercussions of disassembling it would be.

I was just wondering how they might manage getting the phone physically. Of course, maybe they've already made a deal with the guy and currently have the phone in their possession. Maybe they've already looked inside and are just waiting to see if they're allowed to publish what they found. :)

There is absolutely no way this is an Apple design. Everyone here should know better than this. That device in those pictures is FUGLY!!!

No other Apple gadget looks like this. Apple does not put out this kind of **** designs. So please everyone stop and just wait until we hear it straight from Apple. In a few months when we see an actual redesigned iPhone all this nonsense is going to be seen as silly.

He's also saying the back is heard to be glass of some sort and Apple is going for a more professional look of the new iPhone' or a more masculine feel.

With this kind of look and the vastly updated security features in 4.0, it seems like Apple is really trying to go after RIM. With the A4 chip and Apple's ever-increasing battery life in their mobile offerings, they may even compete with BBs in terms of battery life.

No matter how many times I look at that case, it just screams "This isn't Apple."

I wouldn't be surprised if that was just a concept case to hold the real iPhone 4G hardware.

Okay, so the big hole in the front of the device, what are we assuming that is? If it were a picoprojector it would explain the design, if it needed to be the thickness of the device.

I'm just going by how the size of the iphone headphone jack currently looks, and how the one in this picture looks so much larger, because I assume the dimensions of the screen haven't changed.

Josh Topolsky from engadget is on TUAW saying there are details he can't talk about, but that they are VERY confindent that the next gen iPhone will in fact me VERY much like what we see in these pictures based on his sources.

He's also saying this isn't the last we've heard about the iPhone. It's def getting really interesting !!!

Could you provide a link or a quote from Josh. I believe you in what you are saying I was just unable to find it myself. I would like to see what he is saying, along with the context.

I don't know about alot of people, but the whole thing sounds strange. From the story of where it was found, to the spanish "fake" pics, the picture that they had all along with the iPad for months. I just don't believe we will know the whole story until Apple shows us something.

I would like this to be the real thing, just with some changes. The basic look with the "sandwich" of glass an aluminum could be a very striking and professional look if it is done with the usual Apple touch. But we should not criticize this device to hell when it was not shown as a final product, in the right context, or even proven 100% to be genuine. Everyone seems to be taking this this device as the real deal. Only time will tell, but I do think this device is from Apple in some way and could become a great product.

That's my 2 cents.

Where would the headphone jack be then? Either they went to a larger headphone size, or it's really that much thinner.

The story of where it was found is likely to cover the real story on how they got the device (it was probably stolen at some point). The spanish pictures are probably from someone who wanted some fame by faking an iPhone 4G based on the other (presumably real) pictures.

As for the iPad pictures, they didn't keep them to themselves for months, they were published the night before the iPad was released, and some of them show the map application as well as the back of the iPad, looking almost exactly like the unveiled product.

Take a look at this article:

I'm not challenging any validity, I just think it's a crazy turn of events with all the going back and forth. Also I just thought it was crazy that the iPad pictures had this device in it all along.

Important Information

There is absolutely no possible way this is 4. Apple would not allow such a weak piece of industrial design sport their elite marquee. Jesus ****ing christ, it is understood to be stored predominantly in pocket, that's why its smooth, weathered shape has been become more so through the two generations. That thing looks like it was born by Zenith. Jesus ****ing christ.

How could Macrumors.com, my favoritest website ever, publish 3 sequential main page articles about this obviously fictitious farce on my lazy Sunday? Oh wait… Hold on… Pretty clear here; because they are a tool of Apple inc, ya know, by giving Mr. Kim "candy." Propagating this silliness is in big fruits best interest, as the real one might better melt panties in comparison with this product design student at community college, hungover deadline throw-together. The eyelet ringing the headphone jack is an obvious Apple no-do. It's not a cassette WalkMan, right? Jesu…

Basic homo-sapien logic deduces as far as much that the new item will have a button on the side that shortcuts immediately to camera, or other assignable app of user choosing. Holding button will call up "photos." Everybody knows that - even elderly, possibly out of touch, technology columnists for a prominent southern Manhattan publication.

Have a good day.

Hmmm.

Really hard to tell - we were shocked with the black bezel on the unibody MacBook Pro's. People said that was fake (the photo was released night before the keynote) and everyone said no way would Apple do that.

So, who knows.
In my experience (going back to 2005 or thereabouts), everytime pictures and/or detailed descriptions like these surface, people are toppling over themselves to cry FAKE, but 90% of the time it turns out to be the real deal. It happened with the 3GS and 3G, with the MBA, with the latest iPod Nano, with the unibody MBP.... "Apple would never do tapered edges", "Apple would never do a black keyboard/black bezel", "Apple would never leave the design unchanged between the 3G and 3GS", etc etc etc. Some even go as far as pointing out "obvious Photoshopping artifacts" in pictures that later turn out to be real. I'm not sure why it's more shameful to fall for a fake than to have cried fake at something real, but I'll leave that to the psychology experts...

Anyway, I can totally see Apple going in this direction, with the flat back (the current rounded one is more of a nuisance when placing iPhones on tables than it is an ergonomic advantage). I can also totally see them deviating from the "always thinner than the last model" trend this time around. They have to cram so much into this shell now -- 64 GB is a must, front-facing camera is likely, bigger battery is much needed, possible camera flash etc -- that a larger housing might be the only option.

As for it looking like "an old Sony Ericsson", well... when rumors of an aluminum MBP with black keys started to surface people said there's no way Apple would go with the color scheme of a 2005 Dell Inspiron 6000, but I'm typing on such an MBP right now.

As for the flat back making it less comfortable to hold and therefore an unlikely move on Apple's part, anyone who's held the Magic Mouse by its sharp edges should know that not everything Ive designs is pleasant to hold.

Uggggly!!!

Wow. If this is it I will disappointed. Apple always is known for attractive designs and this definitely looks like a Sony Ericsson or a crappy samsung. Hopefully function makes it worth it.

flash???

Has anyone seen a part on the back (in the disassembled photo) that leads us to believe that a flash is likely?

Not on the back, no... but in theory it could have a pop-up flash, like the Canon SX 210 IS (on the silvery part right above the "14.1x" text)...

sx210-is.jpg

...which would explain the seams. ;)

Anyway, if this thing is even the real deal, it's a prototype with some features and cosmetic issues still pending.

How unimaginably stupid do you have to be to still be calling this year's iPhone, the "iPhone 4G?"
