Is it Highlight, or is this a new spelling i.e. Thruway?
Yes, it's a lite (or perhaps I should say light) form of highlight, suitable for informal use. But I don't recommend using that form on the final exam in your English class.

Iffy on Leopard WebClip

When you make a widget with Leopard WebClip, the widget updates as expected, but clicking the links gives nothing?

Otherwise great...

...you can monitor all the gossip/rumors you need/care to know!

This is a "WatchBird", watching you...

Very cool. I'm liking it already. Easy to find something interesting fast, that's surely active too. Only on Macrumors! :)

Awesome.

Is this custom code or a plugin for vB? If it's the latter, I know a friend of mine who runs a vB would be very interested in it.

I love this software! is it available publicly?
The MacRumors Forum Spy is a home-grown feature, written by the one-and-only Knox.

edit ....is this some of that assymetric javascript and XML type stuff?

Yes

Would it be possible to make this thing pause if the mouse is over a link? I keep clicking on the wrong threads because it scrolls down in the meantime. Maybe that's just the nature of the beast though.

Good idea, I'll see whether that could be added.

What's up with the times?

Probably a side-effect of trying to get the timezones to be correct. Is it showing the correct time, but just saying 0 instead of 12?

It's built on the same system MR use for MacRumorsLive.com -- the server architecture's explained here

It's based on the same principles and browser technology (i.e. 'AJAX') but the server architecture is different - MacRumorsLive is completely custom designed for the purpose, while the Spy has to integrate with the normal vBulletin database. They are cousins, rather than being brothers ;)

And yes, it is custom written and not publicly available, sorry :)

Great feature! much like DiggSpy, was that the inspiration? It must be a first for any forum.

I'd like to see number of searches per day pre and post 'Forum Spy' something tells me it'll take quite a hit.

PS Any chance of a play/pause button like the Digg equivliant.

Yeah, it was showing the 0 instead of 12.

This insanely quick reply brought to you by MR Spy :D

Just wanted to publicly say thanks again Knox for all your efforts on this. It's been great seeing it evolve the past week or so and I've found it most useful. I know I for one definitely put it through some "stress testing" so I'd like to think I did my part as well to help. ;) :D

Seriously though, thanks again and it's great to see this handy feature become available to the MacRumors masses.

hear hear... i go on here for the rumors, not the buddy lists

In that case, then all you need is the front page. I use my buddy list in combo with this to selectively read the comments of many forum members who always have useful, interesting or amusing things to say, whether about rumors, Macs or other things.

There are almost 80 people on this list.

I find this new feature really helpful in knowing what to comment on and such:)
I'm lovin' it! Damn that catchy McDonald's song...

Very nice. Is there a way to highlight some specific forums of our choosing? i.e.: Having all, let's say, "software" forum posts listed in blue?

Clever stuff. Congratulations.

What happens if you use the Forum Tools to Subscribe to a specific forum...?

oddly it seems a lot like a feature pioneered on digg.com
....but it has no play/pause button.
Not that it really matters. :)

...but I miss the
thread_dot_hot.gif
"you have posted in this thread"-lightning...

Me too. Having the icons to the side or something similar would make this much easier to use in my case.

OK, this was useful for all of 30 seconds, until I saw someoen posts something every 10 seconds. :) Are there that many of us commenting on things? (there were 5 comments added int he time it too me to type this reply)

Ok, after running it most of the day, two things come to mind:

1) Needs a play/pause system
2) Be able to set how often it updates (min/max)

Forum Spy is great for a large and busy board, but I still prefer Who's Online sorted by date, as it gives a better overview of most of the user activities on MacRumors. I use it to get a sense of which threads are currently popular.

a bug

have not read this entire thread, so this may have come up already...

but when i have spy running, and in a new tab reply to a post, i do not see the little "subscribed" box next to my post in spy unless i manually refresh the spy page.

Sorry if it's already been brought up, but the timing is wrong.

I submitted a post and it's time was 11:18, but on forum spy it read 11:17 -- I know, I know, it's only a minute, but I thought you might want to know.

Edit: But of course this post was timed correctly. :p

Good to see that the Forum Spy is working great under all this stress testing going on due to the Mac mini and and iMac updates! :D ;)

You just wanted to see how quickly this thread would become popular again in the midst of all of the updates and excitement ;)
