Of course Apple lovers will buy anything with an :apple: on it. But after a while, people will realize there are other (better?) things out there and really Apple is playing catch up. In particular with the iPhone 5.

I saw two iPhone 5 commercials today. The two selling points were the new shapes of the earbuds (how well they fit in your ear) and how the phone is smaller yet bigger. If that's all Apple has to sell on and people go for that, then Apple truly are genuises to market such trivial things and make money on it.
Apple has always used form factor and design as a selling point, because it IS. When tech is in its childhood it's mostly about the feature and performance race and people will buy stuff that's bulky or looks like garbage just to get "MOAR". Once tech has matured and is perfectly capable of doing what the majority needs it for, with headroom to spare (I'd be surprised if the majority uses even half of the features and capacity of the 2 year old iPhone 4), other aspects become more important, such as design. I see stuff coming out now that doesn't even make sense, like the HTC phone with 440 ppi, sub-retina resolution. But I'm sure it appeals to people stuck in the 1990's spec race mindset. "Duuuh dat number bigger dan other number. Big number good. Me wowed. Me buy. Duhhh uhh derp."

As for Apple fanboys, how many iPhone buyers do you think has that kind of relation to Apple? The iPhone passed the 100 million mark last spring. For many it's the only Apple product they own, just like my old Nokia phones were the only Nokia products I owned. They're just phones. No fandom required.

Anyone selling their 7-month-old iPad to get a tweaked new one is just insane to me. If you want a smaller mini I could understand but jeez. I had a hard time justifying the jump from iPhone 4 to 5 to myself. They could make the tweaked iPad 1.5x faster and I'd still be fine with the 7-month old "obsolete" model.

I totally agree with you. I wouldn't dream of spending the dough to "upgrade" the iPad I bought just five months ago. Except for the fact that it gets super-hot, it is a great device. Maybe I'll be in the market for an upgrade in another year or two, but certainly not now.

(It's one of the reasons I'm still using a now-out-of-contract iPhone 4, too. In many ways, it still feels "new" to me.)

If the full size iPad gets an upgrade today it would be the first real surprise at an Apple keynote for a long time. I doubt this is going to happen as iPad4 is probably only 4 to 5 months away.

Surely they wouldn't update the iPad this much already, would they?

I think a 1 year product cycle is good for the iPhone and iPad. They are not exactly cheap devices so it's nice to think you are getting your money's worth by getting a full year of the "latest".

I can't see Apple reducing the cycle length because it would deter many people from upgrading ... they would probably up grade every 2 cycles, as opposed to 1.

Also, Apple is such a tight company that upgrades such as this would be saved for a major (1 year) refresh and believe me they would make a huge deal out of it.

My guess is that the only tweak to the the current full sized iPad (if any) will be the Lightning Connector, and nothing else.

Anyway, we shall see ...

You know, I upgraded from an iPad 2 to an iPad 3 because of the retina display. While I hate to see an iPad upgrade so soon, I think I'll be alright.

Eh, no better time for it.

I bought an iPad 2 in Feb knowing the 3 was around the corner, a month after the 3 launched I sold it and only lost £75. Might have lost less if I sold it before the 3 launched.

I keep hearing/reading all over the net this (usually from :apple: NON lovers) but the question you got to ask yourself is: Why? I used to laugh when my friend used to say 5 years ago "Once you go mac, you don't go back" Until i decided to try Mac myself. And guess what happened? Yes... you got that right.

Used so many windows laptops/desctops until 2007! And from 2007 till this moment only one macbook and one iMac. I had zero problems with them! Now you get the picture why Apple lovers buy anything Apple.

Times have changed

There were times when Apple called the shots - now they are only reacting. Apple reinvented the tablets, reinvented the smartphone, but meanwhile the competitors are making the better products. What we will see today will be an iPad mini with the specs of the iPad 2 with a too high price tag on it. It will sell, because Apple has a lot of loyal customers - still.
I will not buy it. My iPad 3 will be my last. For books I have ordered Amazon's Paperwhite, and for everything else I'll get a Windows or Android smartphone, where I at least can print an email (like a boarding pass) on my non Airprint but WI-FI printer an put my settings-shortcuts on the homescreen - which btw has live-symbols. I used to love Apple products and still love my MBP, but for everything else the ridiculous restrictions have exceeded the limit.

All iPad 3's are now obsolete! /sarc

Rumors that this "Nexus" thing gets upgraded: Great news.
Rumors that iPad 3 gets upgraded: Teeth gnashing, someone actually posted that he was going to sue Apple!

Shh... stop making logical sense. It's like the people who say they'll "wait until next year for the better processor" despite the fact that there will obviously be a "better" processor after Haswell. If you need/want something, just buy it. If you choose to wait for the next best thing, you'll be waiting forever.

Absolutely. Exception is when there are announcements; like going to the store right now and buying an iPad might be a bad idea. On the other hand, those that do probably have no clue about new releases and will be using their iPad 3 happily until it breaks down or there is something so much better that it can't be ignored.

Ignorance is bliss.

In this case, yes. Not worrying is bliss as well. Maybe that's why iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S looked exactly the same; to keep all the iPhone 4 users happy.

Why do people feel compelled to write Apple's obituary every time they haven't released a game changer in the last 5 minutes? Retina display was the latest one, iPad before that, iPhone before that... these things happened in the last 5 years and you say "there were times..." like an old geezer reminiscing over his childhood in the prohibition era.

I doubt Apple are going to make and game changing updates to the third generation iPad during todays event. Remember they only released the third generation during their 2012 'There's a lot to look forward to' release cycle.

They may add the the new dock connector and they may not, but changing the iPad on a whole with new cameras and less weight is most likely off the cards. They probably leave enhancements like that till the spring to allow them to make a bigger splash with the forth generation.

This is why the name change from iPad 3 to "iPad" makes sense. The iPad can be tweaked slightly without creating too much confusion.

yep. it's just like Apple's computer products. this will be known as iPad (late 2012). The previous one is iPad (early 2012).

So what? It's not like the 3rd gen is no longer going to be supported or going to stop working.

Android phones don't stop working either, and Google's core apps are updated separately from the OS so even Gingerbread still benefits (Chrome browser the one exception). Doesn't keep them from getting knocked here.

But it's not worth getting stressed out about a BGR rumor anyway. We'll see what actually happens, I'd be surprised if there were truly significant upgrades.

Full SMS support in future iPads?

Will future iPads have full SMS support meaning you could send SMS messages to any mobile phones? Will it ever happen?

When carriers let go of the illusion that it's OK to charge people for an archaic service, which makes about as much sense as forcing car owners to pay "horse tax", sure.

Apple, please update it with as many features as possible. Not just because I am looking to buy an iPad but because reading the dramatic comments from fanboys will be that hilarious.

Those comments won't be coming from fanboys... true fanboys buy anything new and shiny from Apple even if they update the design every two days.

The whining will come from a different (but partially overlapping) demographic called "I must have the latest or else I die"-people. All brands have their clusters of those weak souls.

Think Apple will call this the newer iPad? And the one next year will be call newest iPad.

You make a good point but remember when Apple reduced the iPhone price by $200 in September of 2007? Remember some of the responses people left? "Oh, I was such an Apple loyalist and purist but now that they screwed me, I won't ever buy an Apple product again! :(" Of course, these people were in line to buy the 3G a year later.

Either way, if Apple tweaks the full-size iPad in any significant way, expect weeping and gnashing of teeth :)
