After debating a replacement for my iBook 600 for months I decided I would go the 15" Alu road, then decided to hold off because of the cost side of things.

I ordered my new G4 iBook last week - okay the specs are a bit less than the 15" but what a deal, it's almost half the price, here in the UK.

Now, if they would just get it here... directly from the factory in Taiwan! Tracking lost it on Thursday somewhere in Luxembourg. Hopefully today is the day!

iBooks fit my needs and price range. After two years my iBook 600 is still hammering on well. Only fault is a loose '9' key. Not bad after two years of continous use. :)

cel, in anticipation of a new ice beauty

new ibook G4

Over the last year I've had:
ibook 12" 600
PB rev B. 15"
imac 800 15"

and now a new ibook 12"G4

I have to say, that both this ibook and my last ibook 600 were the best two computers I've had, battery life is excellent, their trouble free, no monitor problems and they do everything I need. Unless I'm totally loaded in the near future, I won't be spending over double the money again on a PB or buying what I consider to be a very dull imac. Enjoy the G4's

I dont' see how the 1GHz iBook is
worth $200 more than the 933MHz
iBook. $200 for and extra 66MHz and
20GB of hard disk space is overpriced.
It could understand the $200 if it had
a superdrive too.

The model being referred to by the other poster is the X505 from Sony. (And if $2200 makes you say ouch, don't look at the pricing on this beauty... but if I had the money for an extra carry-along computer, this would be the one; it's like when you have the family lux sedan, you buy the sports car convertible for the fun days)

A link to this model: http://www.dynamism.com/x505/

DDR SDRAM vs SDRAM

Frankly, I'm at a loss as to what advantage DDR with a G4 offers over plain old SDRAM with a G4.

I suspect that Apple uses DDR simply to maximize volume discounts. Also, with DDR dominating the main memory market now or soon, it will enjoy greater economy of scale...cheaper.

Extra $200 for 1 GHz

I think the extra 66 MHz is not so important (unless for the psychological difference between MHz and GHz, if that's an issue).

More important is the difficulty in upgrading hard drives in iBooks. I've heard the G4 might be slightly easier, but you still have to disassemble the whole thing to get to the hard drive.

iBook G4 HD upgrade

You're right, the G4 ib hard drive is apparently fairly straightforward to upgrade. It's much the same as the old iBook case, other than the bottom part of the case doesn't come off now, you just unscrew the phillips screws from the bottom and under the keyboard, then lift the top off, apparently not much effort involved. Some guy's replaced his drive, I can't remember where I read it, perhaps macworld forums??? It's within the last few days though. All apparently without a hitch. Can't say I need to with mine as it's practically unused but you never know... Always nice to have the option.

On a similar note, does anyone know whether a single 1Gb RAM upgrade works in the G4 iBook? I still haven't heard anyone try it yet, and I don't have the spare cash to try myself currently.

just not think about it. its easier said than done.

so give us the run down. what exact specs did you get? how much ram and all that other good stuff. any extras like ae or bluetooth? did you order it from the apple store? did you use an edu discount? and if you did, are you actually a student? ;)

im gonna order mine probably next week so i can get it by that saturday. im stoked as well, my first mac.

lol! well, I *am* a student, and will also be a teacher next year! Yippee! (this is my rationalising for getting the ibook: I'm going to be ultra productive over the holidays making teaching resources and not mucking about and randomly surfing and playing games, oh yes! coughcoughcough)

ummm... no bluetooth (don't really think I need it, I'll spend the money on clothes instead *g*), extra 512 RAM, 60 gig hdd, airport card, video adapter and STM alley bag :) all up AU$2400, so I'm thinking that's not bad, really!

I ordered through a Nextbyte store 'cos my credit card only has a limit of $1000 (though the whole amount is in there) and Apple won't do 3 separate transactions for a payment... and besides, I want the CC points - that's almost a subscription to Cosmo ;) (uhhh... maybe not)

This is my first mac *ooOOOOoooh* so I'm rather excited about it all. If only it would hurry up and get here!

You could always tell people that your iBook has a .933GHz processor ;)

im excited for you too haha. im sure you will put it to good use. thanks for the specs.

man, im either getting for myself this christmas or next month for my birthday. i might just wait for macworld but i dont think anything announced there will have any relevance to ibooks considering the latest upgrade. oh well, im hoping an announcement of the next gen ipods, and hope they come by mid 2004.*fingers crossed*

Just ordered the 12" iBook G4

Seems people like to read about others’ iBook orders on this forum, so here I go…

It's actually replacing a 867MHz QuickSilver tower. So I'm taking a small hit for speed, but I really wanted the portability... and I only do video once in a while anyway. If I couldn't do the dual-display hack, I would have had to go with the PowerBook, but I was VERY happy to find out about that hack! It saved me $400!

I went with the Apple Store for Education (my wife's a teacher) - it was the only way I could get it with the 60GB hard drive... even though MacMall had it cheaper (cause no tax) and with a bunch more freebees. But I would have been stuck with the 30GB drive.

Here's my whole order, broken down by store, including tax/shipping/etc.:

Apple store for Education:
12" 800MHz iBook G4
256MB RAM
60GB hard drive (only $67 more than 30GB!)
Bluetooth inside (see note below)
Combo Drive
Apple Video Adapter - S-Video/RCA
Epson C84 printer (free after rebate) (see note below)
=$1214 (after printer rebate)

Apple Store (non-education)
Airport Extreme card - I had to order this separately because I wanted to use my $20 Apple store coupon from renewing my .Mac account, and I couldn't use it along with the Education discount. So I got the (refurbished) Airport Extreme card for $59! Sweet!
= $62.84

Crucial.com
512MB RAM
=$123.53

So the iBook itself cost a total of
$1400.37

I added to that:

iSleeve case from booqbags.com
=$35.79

Logitech Cordless Elite Duo keyboard/mouse from Amazon.com (yes, it’s Mac-compatible – it has both Win & Mac labels on the keys)
=$34.99 (after $20 rebate)

Whistler PP400AC 400 Car Power Adapter from Buy.com (see note at end)
=$46.00

Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router
=$53.99 (after $20 rebate)

External FireWire/USB 2.0 hard drive case to put my 120GB drive into (see not at end)
= about $96 (ouch!)

That gives me a grand total of
$1664.14
for:
12” iBook 800MHz, 60GB, 640MB, CDR/DVD, 802.11g, Bluetooth, Video-out or Extended desktop, 10.3 Panther
Custom-fit 12” iBook case
Cordless keyboard & mouse
802.11g wireless router
Car power adapter

Now, if I can keep track of all my orders without going crazy, I’m going to be a very, very happy man by the end of next week!

- - - - - - - - - NOTES - - - - - - - - -

(Blutooth) I don't know what I'll use it for yet, but I don't want to have to use a USB port in case I get a new cell phone or something in the future - I hate that Apple won't sell the internal moduals separately, so I could buy it later and install it myself!

(Epson C84) I priced out all of Epson's offerings, including print/scan and printers, and it turns out that the C84 is the cheapest per-page printer they offer. I didn't look at any printers over $200, so they may be better, but the C84 is a pretty good deal when you figure in long-term costs of ink. Of interest, the C64 uses the exact same ink cartridges, and prints about 15% less pages per cartridge. Crazy! The C84 also accepts a “high-capacity” black cartridge for 1/3 more money, with 2x more ink.

(Whistler Car Adapter) I looked at the Belkin iBook auto adapter, but it was $80. I decided on the Whistler adapter, because it has 2 regular power outlets, and you can plug it right into the car battery, leaving your cigarette lighter adapter open for other things (iPod, perhaps). With 2 outlets, I’m hoping to be able to plug in both the iBook and my FireWire hard drive. I’ll have to wait & see if it’ll power both of them, though.

(FireWire case) I haven’t decided yet. Probably going to go with an OWC (macsales.com) case, since I keep hearing they’re a ton better than the rest. Unless anyone else knows of a better (or cheaper!) choice! Also considering a WesternDigital FireWire/USB2 120GB complete drive for $139.99 after $50 rebate. It’s only about $40 more than OWC’s empty case, (and it includes a 120GB drive) but I don’t think it has the Oxford 911 chipset, which is what makes the OWC drive so much faster/better. I priced the OWC case in my estimate above.

POWERBOOK G5!

Just out of random curiosity, when does everyone think that the G5 Powerbook will make it's debut? Just wanted to see what people think. :)

My guess would be early next year. I really believe that Apple will move everything to the G5 over the next two years, and it only makes sense that the Powerbook would next.
If the cooling is a problem I would guess the iMac/eMac (I don't think these will remain two seperate lines as I cannot image CRT remaining around for long) would come next only because it would be easier to come up with a design that could be cooled easily and eficiently. That could mean no G5 powerbook until late 2004 - early 2005.
Meanwhile, I dream of a G5 cube!!!
:)

iBook missing foot

I've had the 12" iBook G4 for a few weeks now. It all works great other than one small problem... One of the round grey feet has fallen off. Has anyone else had this happen?

I've used iBooks for several years and never had one come off before.
